Title: "Ol Maudie" ailing
Post by: HUBBARD on October 25, 2010, 12:13:08 PM
I guess I bragged too much on 'Ol Maudie's stamina, in the presence of merciless abuse.  :( I think she has a broken valve-spring, or two.  At any rate, will be transporting the 'Ol Girl to Tilley's, post haste.  ;) Later--HUBBARD

Cool

I met with Don on Saturday and told him you needed to spend some more money there.
He said he would call.
All was well till Nancy sat on the silver 09 SERG in his showroom and decided she wanted it.
She was beating him down till I got her out of there and told her not no, but hell no, no more 110's.
Well, plus it had a lot of miles.
Good luck with Maude!
At Tilleys, Hubbard cash will fix anything!
If you wait till it's not raining I may meet you there.

Had her loaded up and headed to Tilley's yesterday, but I-77 was shut down at the second Tunnel due to an accident.  Traffic was detoured across Big Walker on the Old Road, and then the shift sensor in my Denali took a crap.  I've run the hell out of it, too.  Nothing lasts forever.  Soon as Neal sets the appointment, I'll let you know.  :2vrolijk_21: Later--HUBBARD

Hey Pal'

Hate to hear you had trouble with the tunnel, I figured she was already resting comfortably in ICU at Tilley's.  I am sure that Neal will get her right as rain soon.

Shrader

PS  Randy and I were contemplating putting a post on here regarding Maudie's illness but we didn't have the heart.

You're exactly right, spyder!  Could have been a lot worse.  I'd been thinking about gettin' the Ol' Girl freshened up for a while.  Every time I put her on the chip, (not on purpose, mind you), it weakens those valve springs.  I have absolutely no complaints with that Motor.  Quite frankly, I don't see how it's stayed together this long.  Sho' nuff had a Truck Load of fun with the Ol' Girl!  Later--HUBBARD

Hey, Pete!

As I said, Neal doesn't think it's anything major.  Valve Spring, or maybe just adjust the valves.  I think it's worse than that, but I've been wrong before.  We'll see.  Takin' it to Tilley's Thursday, or Friday. $$  Later--HUBBARD

Chains,

You know how it is.  When we first saddle up on a Big Motor, it feels like a Rocket.  Then we get used to it, and think it ain't runnin' right.  No complaints, though.  It's been a good one.  She'll live to be in the front, again.  WFO!  ;)  Later--HUBBARD

Carl,

Don't know lifter manufacturer, but assume Feuling if supplied by Zippers.  If so have heard of such failures with Fueling lifters (roller failure).  I had same lifter collapse on my motor (no damage, just noisy).  Changed over to S&S, no problems since (in over 40K miles).

Don't forget there have been two different Feuling lifters.  They offer their standard lifter and a "race" or supposedly higher performance lifter.  Have seen the "race" lifters fail in two engines but haven't personally seen their standard lifters fail.

Two are only data points and not trends of course.  But worth paying attention to when comparing what failed in Carl's motor.

I think I had about 12-13K miles on her when they were replaced with S&S.  Got 59K now with no problems.  Don't know if they were the HP type or not.  Sounds like 2Lane may have something, the Feulings that I saw fail were in a hopped up 95 cu. in. built by Hillside cycle.  That dude abused the hell out of that motor.

Don,

ALL BS aside, the only time Ol' Maudie has been dusted was by UnBalanced, and I was 2-up, and he was Solo, so we will probably have to do that again in Daytona, this coming Spring.  That said, I'll probably put her back as a 120, with the most recent updates.  Like lifters, valve springs, etc.  :2vrolijk_21: Later--HUBBARD

Your in business for the goverment.

Hardly nothing.  I thought she was acting up over some bad Fuel.  I'd put some 114 in, and noticed it looked like shellac.  Bottom of the barrell, obviously.  Tried to blow it all out, WFO.  Too much, too long.  Later--HUBBARD

Naw, spyder, it is 6-speed.  Gotta' replace 5th Gear, that's all.  It's been making a sort of high-pitched whine for 2-3 years.  I have no compalints with these failures.  I kept that Ol' Girl's throttle twisted.  ;) Later--HUBBARD

Neal decided to have S&S install New Crank-Shaft in the Wheels, .10 over Pistons, Woods 650 Cams, (gears were fine), the new Bee-Hive Valve Springs,  and going back with Harley Lifters.  Replaced 5th Gear, and Bearings in the 6-Speed.  Should crank out a few more Hosses, but I realize I'm in the realm of diminishing returns.  I'm confident the Ol' Girl will be feisty as ever when she gets back Home.  :2vrolijk_21: Later--HUBBARD

An old refrigerator one the front porch would make an awesome smoker pit. Yup. I don't see anything wrong with that. But, I'm from KY. Flower pot out of the old commode. Cutting board out of the top seat, frame the family picture in the lower seat. Just an all around down home feel to it.

Yup.  I'm with Big B.  9 pages on a blown up bike.  Wow.  One thing is also a given.  No matter how fast you are there's always someone who is faster.  To me no matter what Harley it is they aren't fast in the overall scheme of things.  That's why I owned a BMW K1200S.

Cheers, Moe

Ok, just did a search.  Numnuts was out there a half dozen times before.  Best one was Carl talking to Chip :huepfenlol2: .

Personally I think if Harry was wanting to change his username to Numnuts and the mods wouldn't let him we should all follow Carl's lead and just use it for him anyway.  It is Christmas time.  So we should be kind and help a brother out.

Guess I better make an attempt to defuse this chit before terds start flying in cyber-space.  Numnuts is a term I use in jest, and only voiced at those to whom I consider friends, and in my opinion, would not take offense to it.  As a matter of fact, the first time I heard the term, my Dad's Brother tagged me with it.  So, in all fairness, HUBBARD is the original numnuts.  Later in life, "numnuts", would have been a badge of honor, compared to what I have been called, and deservedly so.  As far as Mr. Chithead is concerned, OTIS and I reviewed the HBRR Charter, and at this time he is not a member.  If any of my smarta$$ed remarks offended Unbalanced, or SBB, I apologize.  If Unbalanced and SBB offended each other, as a result of my Post, that is not my affair.  That said, permit me, as BB said, to get back to the basics of this Post.  Just returned from Tilley's, and Neil is waiting on a bearing, which should be there Tuesday.  Everything else is in place, and waiting to be buttoned up, starting Tuesday morning.  I thought about a D&D Fat-Cat, but can't seem to convince myself.  A Dresser just don't look right to me without duals.  Had to get a different style Oil Cooler, as the one I had has been discontinued.  Ya'll have a Merry Christmas, and a Prosperous New Year!  :2vrolijk_21:  Later--HUBBARD

Carl,

Glad to hear Maudies almost completed.   There is a company that buys out the closeouts from Harley.  They might just have an oil cooler like you had if you really wanted to replace it with like parts.   Let me know if you need the company name most dealers already know about them, but just in case.

I am with ya on the D&D pipe.

Looking forward to seeing you and the kid for Bikeweek and hopefully Randy too if he is healed up enough to come.   Any word on whether Kenny is going to be well enough to make it with you guys?

Hope you and your's have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year !

Man, that was one of those rides we'll be talking about in the Rockin' Chair, huh Brian?  When you went into that wobble, I remember thinkin', "I can crowd over to that guardrail, jump off, and keep this big Black Bi*ch from stompin' me."  :( Yeah, sure, jump off at 100 MPH!  Thank God there were no 4-wheelers in the right-hand lane.  That would have been BIG, to say the least!  Seemed wierd to me because we had been runnin' harder and faster than that, and I hadn't seen you wobble.  Must have had something to do with that long, sweeping left-hand curve.  And Joe, ready to backhand that idiot on the bicycle!  And then, doin' a burnout right in front of "The Man!"  In all my years in the saddle, I have never riden as hard, and as long, as that day.  I'd even venture to say that that day of abuse was a major factor in Ol' Maudie "giving her milk", a short time after. The Gods were definitely Ridin' with us that day!  I'll see OTIS, today.  He's got some new high-tech toy he wants me buy.  Hope to see you in Maggie Valley, or before.  :2vrolijk_21: Merry Christmas!  8) Later--HUBBARD

What ended up being the changes?  How much more Maudie will there be than she was before?  And when does spring happen in West BG Virginia so you can wring her out a bit?

Hey, Twolane!
For starters, a complete new S&S Bottom End, complete with Rods.  Cylinders were out .004, so we punched them .010.  Replaced the Red Shift 647's with Wood Performance 650's, and Fueling-HD lifters, with HD Lifters and Push-Rods.  New "Bee-Hive", Valve Springs, and cleaned up the Heads and TB a little.  Like you said, "everything but the cases."  Couldn't do much more, as I'm in the area of diminishing returns.  The Ol' Girl had around 125 HP, 138 lbs. ft, previously.  If she produces any more, it won't be noticable in the seat of my britches.  I'm hoping to complete the "break-in", before Daytona, but it is what it is.  If I have to drop it off at Tilley's on the way back from Daytona for final tuning, I'll never hear the end of it from Unbalanced.  Merry Christmas!  Later--HUBBARD

Sounds like you're excited and looking forward to having her done Carl.  The old girl was ridden hard so it's hard to say she didn't deserve some new bits.  Unfortunate she took so many new bits.  But she earned it.

Will look forward to hearing or reading of the first reports after the bike is back in service.  You know it'll be fun!

Appreciate the vote of confidence, there ggraves, but Ol' Maudie is set up for top-end.  I've never put her through a burn-out, nor have I ever power-shifted into 2nd or 3rd gear.  I did hit 2nd pretty hard once, and I almost lost her.  We like to roll on from about 70 or 80 MPH.  Not saying I don't abuse her.  It's obvious I do.  Jerking the Ol' Girl through the 1/4 mile, would tear up too much chit for me.  I get-off on those flat-out, WFO runs.  TRAFFIC has put a damper on those long runs of late.  The last year or so, traffic on Interstates 64, 77 & 81 is unreal.  "Bears" are everywhere in Southwest Virginia.  They did raise the speed limit in Va., at least in our area, to 70 MPH, but it's still Reckless Driving there over 80.  Harry knows Central Florida pretty well, and we've been lucky there so far.  Hell, as a matter of fact, I've been lucky everywhere.  ;) Later--HUBBARD

After selling the Springer, I'm back in the building mode for a bit this winter.  Since you and I don't race (each other) we'll have to chat on some of the Tilley genius factor before I get the parts on order.  Don't really know why I'm building another hot rod motor as I only put a grand total of 600 miles on the last one before letting it go to someone that just had to have it.   ::)

Just talked to Neal, and Ol' Maudie fired on the first bump, like she was riden yesterday.  Gotta' put a new set of RINEHART's on the Ol' Girl.  Lotta' air passed through those, and their junk.  Just can't get my head around a 2 into 1.  Too loud, and not that much boost, unless you're drag racing, IMHO.  Gonna' tune her up, and put the new exhaust on after they return from Jett-Hot.  He's gonna' break her in on the Dyno.  2 weeks, tops.  8) Later--HUBBARD

That's good news Carl.  Congrats on the progress man.  Great to hear she's alive again.  Getting some  break in time on a dyno wheel done has to make waiting on the WV spring a little easier too.  Can't wait to hear how she feels to you when you get to take the old girl back out.

Thank you so much for this post. I have resisted all attempts by fellow site members and local friends alike to install a 2 into 1 system on LD. Inasmuch as Maudie is (argueably) one of the fastest non water buffalo H-D's on this site, and you are coming out in strong support of true dual exhaust puts a smile on my face. They can call me old school all they want as long as they're not looking at my license plate.

As I said, a Dresser just doesn't look right to me, without Duals.  JR suggested the D&D with the dummy, which looks good, but I just can't talk myself into it.  Statistics support a 2 into 1 may give you a 1/2 Bike advantage in the short run, but on flat out top-end runnin', I'll stick with my Tru-Duals.  I think the RINEHART 2 into 1 looks better than the Fat-Cat, but I still can't do it.  8) Later--HUBBARD

It will be more fulfilling than the last ride, I'm sure.  With the roller on the lifter lockin' up from time to time before it imploded, had to limit the Cam from doin' its job.  Neal said the exhaust valve in the rear Head was a little loose, too.  Hell, who knows, she may surpass even my expectations.  We will definitely find out what she's packin', real soon.  8) Later--HUBBARD

We both know that as things wear in then wear out it happens so gradually that, to a point, we never notice it in the seat of the pants.  So pick up a loose valve guide here, a little slop elsewhere and who knows what else from the abuse she's enjoyed then correct it all in one sudden resurrection and you might notice quite a bit of difference.

Waitin' on the headers to get back from being coated, then Neal is gonna' break her in on the Dyno, and tune her up.  The build is complete, but for that.   As stated, the Motor was originally a 120.  We punched it .010, so now that's what, about 122?  Changed Bottom End, Cams, Lifters, and Valve Springs.  Tilley cleaned up the Heads and TB, significantly.  I'm confident she'll run a little better.  :2vrolijk_21: Later--HUBBARD

Carl,

A person who requested to remain anonymous that had been up at Tilleys called and they stated that you have gone with a bigger crank and bore pistons than what you had in the the bike previously.  I don't blame ya for going bigger since you had it apart, but we deserve the real details.

So is it a 124 or a 131 now.   Please Advise

Hey 103
Carl's changed a bunch of things on his ride with this rebuild and the post you quote expresses an opinion on asthetics not performance. I was wondering if he'd decided to make a change. Maudie waiting on RINEHART Header-Pipes, to return from coating.  Final dyno results forthcoming.  8) Later--HUBBARD

Hubbard sorry to hear about the delay in the new headpipes that really sucks, but at least you have choices still.   Has Neil gotten that final dyno done yet?

It appears the owner of Elliot's, (Jett-Hott business), has taken ill, and his staff has some major issues with telling the truth.  My Header-Pipes have supposed to have been ready tomorrow, for dam nigh 2 wks. now.  Looks like Ol' Maudie will have to strut her old RINEHARTS, 'till I return from Daytona.  Made my mind up to go get the Ol' Girl tomorrow, and that's that. Gotta' slick up her up so she can cut that air.  8) Later--HUBBARD

Thats right blame it on poor ol Maudie

No.  Tilley advised not to exceed 3500 for 2 days, then ride normal.  I'll drop it off on the way back for final tune, and new pipes.  I'm gonna try to put a few miles on before we leave the Mountain State.  Sure good to see the Ol' Girl in the garage this morning.  ;) Later--HUBBARD

Guess that means normal, normal for 2-300 miles.  Then, I'll see what she's got.  Sure does sound good.  Seems a lot quieter, idling.  ;) Later--HUBBARD

You know what I mean, spyder.  I should've said it sounds smoother now than it did, before I blowed it up.  Someone on here said the Wood Performance Cams were noisy.  Not as noisy as Red-Shift.  IMO, anyway.  Can't wait to twist that bitch.  8) Later--HUBBARD

5000 plus reads on a thread about one member's motorcycle.

Carl, I have to give you credit where credit is due, you are a master salesman.

If one believes Leo Dicaprio's speech in The Quick and The Dead, you've already won the race.

Thanks, Big Brian!  My Dear Departed Mother always said I had an "uncanny ability to make people like me."  Some have lived to regret that, but that was then, and this is now.  I guess Ol' Maudie has quite a "following", no pun intended.  ;) Later--HUBBARD

I, for one, can't wait to see what you come out with in the end.

Can't wait to see what I come out with either... haven't seen my bike since October... I'm living through you! The only thing I've ridden all winter is my dirt bike! C'mon springtime!!!

Shrader,

Why don't you pull yourself away from that Ford Dealer and head on down with ole Hub and spend some time in the wind with us.   BTW did Randy tell you about the wobble fix we had on our 04 SEEG, turned out the wheel had issues and wouldnt roll true and had to be replaced ... after replacement wobble gone.

Just took the Ol' Girl for a ride.  Sounds good, and feels strong.  Throttle response seems quicker to the twist.  Didn't ride her far, as it's a little nippy here and the further the faster.  I tried to keep her under 3500, but hit 4000 once, before I knew it.  Seems to pull harder, quicker in 6th.  Then again, may just be where she was failing before.  At any rate, I'm happy.  Everything clean and neat.  Looking forward to seeing some of ya'll in FL.  8) Later--HUBBARD
