Title: What kind of gun?
Post by: SBB on November 14, 2006, 11:29:34 PM
This definately belongs in the other topics thread!

I know we have some hunters on this site and was wanting some feedback and information.

Went wild boar hunting last week and used a friends gun.'
Going back again soon and want to buy a gun for that purpose.
What should I buy?
Not looking for the cheapest but don't need the most expensive either.
The boars are 175 lbs. to 275.
Shot will be from 50 yards to 150 yards.
Shot will be from a tree.
Then again the boar may walk right under the tree stand.

What gun?
What caliber?
What recommendations for a scope.
I KNOW,,, hellofa question on a CVO site but thought I would ask!

A .50 caliper machine gun,....oh wait, you said from a tree, nevermind, Those hogs can be mean mothers, I went once with my brother in law. We used a 30/30?, or 30.06, I think thats what it was if I remember right. Anyway, I also found out I didnt like my drunk brother in law much that weekend too. I Almost bagged him.

I use my Weatherby7mm mag for everything.
160 grain partitioned Weatherby amo
Variable 2-12 scope.
I have shot a lot of game with this rifle.
Hogs, deer, elk, moose, bear
I shot 37 hogs, 20+ deer, 1 moose, 1 bear this year already.

This is like asking whether to use a SERT or Power Commander and what kind of pipes to add.

The gun group can be just as OGD as the CVO group is OCD.

Dukes right on with his Weatherby 7mm.  A guy with a lot of time to hunt evidently too [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

I use a Weatherby 300 mag with 180 gr Nosler partition and a Leupold 3 x 9 scope.

Chip not the cheapest and not the most expensive. Try a Remington 700 in .270 cal. It is a great all around gun. On mine I have a Leupold 3x9 x 40mm scope. 300 yard accurate shots are a peice of cake if you need them. You will be able to hunt deer with this gun also.

But, if I was hunting hogs from 50 to 150 yards and had a good rest like the stand you mention I may have to go with Mike and us a 50 caliber, not a machine gun, just a S & W 500 with a Leupold 2x scope.

Geez Duke, What did you do with all that meat?

I shot all the hogs and most of the deer in the bijou of Louisiana last December and January on a special hunt sponsored by a local landowner and fish and game. We gave all the meat to the locals who were very glad to get it. There are an awful lot of folks down there whose lives have been turned up side down as a result of the Katrina devastation. I kept the moose and deer meat we shot in early October in Canada for some friends and myself. My brother loves bear meat so I left it with him in Washington.

FOR WHAT LITTLE HOG HUNTING IVE DONE IVE ALWAYS USED A REMINGTON  870 DEERSLAYER WITH O/O BUCKSHOT & SLUGS, WITH A 44 MAG STRAP ON THE HIP. YOU DONT WANT TO BE LEFT EMPTY HANDED IF YOU HIT AND INJURE A PISSED OFF BIG BOAR. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Up here in West "BY GOD" Virginia, the MEN Hog Hunt with a 29 or 629 Smith, or a Colt Anaconda, 2-3 Speed loaders, and a Arkansas Toothpick.  We don't shoot 'em 'till we see the fire in their eyes, which is about 10-12 feet away.  'Course, we're standin' on a stump when we bust a cap between their evil eyes.  That was years ago when I was a younger Man.  Ain't got the heart, or the time, to hunt them now.  Later--HUBBARD

Here's one that's about 180 lbs.
They run about 150 to 250.

Leaning toward the 300 Weatherby Mag.

If we use the dogs then I will use the Super Redhawk 7" in 44.
That would be a 10 to 15' shot like Hubbard likes!
If I take Hubbard all I have to do is run faster than him if something goes wrong! [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Oh my gawd, I'm gonna get some chit fer this.....     I took somewhere between 200 and 300 hogs while I was stationed in Louisiana...  (Over a 5 year period, and most went to the butcher for distibution at cut rate in Leesville, 'cause the meat tasted like a pine nut, and my wife have relative that were poor folks and it made her feel good...)  I carried a large bore handgun for those days when something went astray, (which was damned seldom) and used a Ruger 10-22 with a 3-9 scope on it for the business end of the day.  Plink, drop, plink, drop, plink, drop,  go ge the truck and the beer....

Hogs die easy when you head shoot 'em.  And thier dumb. dumber than your gun.  With a .22 they look at the shot, then they look at their buddy that just went down, and then they go back to eating...  so you can shoot the next one.  ::)

Head shots also keep the damned things from tasting so bad when they bleed out in to the meat...   Even if you go big for a gun, stick to the head or you won't be thrilled with the taste.   If you're looking for a mounted head, shoot 'em high in the neck with something wide and they'll drop like you hit 'em with an axe.  The meat and hide is thick and tough enough it will break thier necks pretty easy with a large bore round.  With even medium level stalking skills, you won;t need over a 75-100 shot unless it is extremely open terrain.  (I didn't have any of that type terrian and most shots were 25-75 yards, with the longer ranges most productive because the herds wouldn't move off before you dropped a couple of them...)

PS...  DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT!  drop out of tree with a big knife and think you will kill a hog easy.  Let my ego fueled stupidity and 80 stitch trip to the ER stand as a reminder and skip the trip yourself....    Not to mention that I almost got booted out of the military for gross negligence in the destruction of gov't property (me)....
what a dipchit I was in my younger days...

There were in fact, pictures of the incident in question, taken by my long since ex-wife, which were brought to court as part of those proceedings to indicate that I might not be "all there".  I imagine she still has them as they were nothing short of epic in their humor. (in retrospect only...)

And yes, it was the attendance at a showing of the newly released movie Rambo that put the thought in my itty bitty noggin....     those damned movies will lead you astray everytime, won't they!

Nah, she just had a ton of very poor relatives, and thought it was a good idea to give back to the community, (so to speak).  Family we fed directly...

And yeah, she's gone.  But that was my choice.  She had a little problem with fidelity when I was out of the country on TDY's.   That got old pretty quick.

The huntin' part was the best part.  I really enjoyed my outdoors time with a gusto back then....   maybe a little too much gusto every once in a while...   ::)

He's right, ya know.  The .50 is a nice slow push.  Quite comfortable for recoil. A little on the loud side, but not sharp and unfriendly sounding. Those little piker rounds like a .45 winMag and the old standby .44 mag have to hit real hard real guick to get any horsepower, and it slaps the hand like ya momma used get ya with a spoon.  (verrrrry uncomfortable)   ::)   On the other hand, my story doesn't really explain why I shook the crosshairs out of the first two scopes I put on it...hmmm......   Never mind.  It really is very comfortable to shoot.

BTW, the hand cannon is something completely different, but I can't talk about that here, becasuse it would be off topic......... [smiley=oops.gif]

So I have been thinking about the shot of the three calibers and thought I'd do one from the gun safe to include the S & W 500 just to give a little more perspective to the .50 caliber horsepower debate.

Here's the S&W 500, DE 50, 44 mag and 357 mag against a background you may recognize and also appreciate for the horsepower it represents
Title: Re: What kind of gun?
Post by: RJ749 on November 29, 2006, 01:33:58 AM
And I might say you can't get a true perspective of the power of the 500 without this comparison shot.
