What makes you a biker?
« on: January 10, 2009, 12:26:17 PM »

Just finished going through the new edition of TP and was reading a letter where a guy ripped into another about not being a real biker. The guy was clearly pissed. It was in response to the question of waving at other bikes(I am not wanting to start a discussion on waving) I had to giggle when I finished the article but it made me start wondering.
This is not new as I have seen lots of discussion about it over the years but it seems that in the last couple of years it is a huge issue, more so in the last couple of years where TV has brought biking into the mainstream(for better or worse).
I got my first bike when I was 14. That is over 30 years ago :-\ and I am not sure that qualifies me to judge if you are a biker or not.

God I must be bored.   :stars:

I've kinda wondered about this "Real Biker" thing through the years (mostly when I had absolutely nothing else to think about  :D )

Anyway, I started riding on the back of bikes about the time I started walking.  I had my first motorcycle when I was about 6 or 7 years old.  Been riding on the street (legally) for 34 years. I have built motorcycles from junk parts.  I have owned as many as five motorcycles at one time.  I have all the accessories that bikers have (leather and such).  Through the years, I have probably ridden close to a half-million miles.  Still don't think I have made it to the "Real Biker" status  :D , and ain't really aiming for it either.

I'm just a guy with a motorcycle and I love to ride.  I love to ride all by myself - I love to ride leaning back against my BSR - and I love to ride my bike down the road surrounded by dozens of friends that have a similar passion for riding.

Not sure what all this makes me, but it's what I am.

What if you stole it, does that mean you own it and are a biker, or are you just a bike riding thief? :confused5:

Not that it matters but I always thought that if you owned a bike AND rode it you were a biker.

The Chinese say a man is three things:

What he sees himself as;

What others see him as;

What he really is.

What about our comrads whom have gone down and can no longer ride due to phisical limitations? Thier riding led to their limitations however they no longer own a bike. Are they bikers? I don't know, I 'd better stop thinking

I can not define what is referred to as a biker but I can define that I ride a bike.  So what does that make me and others?

I have a bike, love to ride.

Do I have to ride for 20 years to be a biker?

Do I need to have a tattoo and a blue collar job to be a biker?

Can I work in a suit and tie and still be a biker?

I don't know if I'm a biker or not, but I love to ride my bike, and that's all that matters to me.

I think that is a very simple question, what makes you a biker is the fact that you ride a Motorcycle.
plain and simple.

The term "biker" had implied connotations as to how much riding and how gritty of a rider you are.

Those arguments are senseless waste of time and who actually cares what someone thinks.

There are seasoned bikers and bad bikers and new bikers and skilled bikers, but they are all bikers.

There are always 2 things that are true.

1. there are always bikers worse than you

2. There are always biker better than you

So in short who cares?

I'm just a simple country boy and I love to ride, be around, work on, talk, clean, look at, ride, ride, ride, ride, and ride motorcycles.  If that makes me a biker, I have one question:  DILLIGAF?  NO!  I just wanna RIDE!   :2vrolijk_21:

I am what I am. I can ride alone or in a group.  If you need my help, you need only ask.  To me, I am a biker.  I don't really care what anybody thinks I am.
The essence of a biker IMHO is what we see here every day.  A group of Men and women who willingly offer help and encouaragement to others whom they may or may not even know.

I am one of those who doesn't really care what others think. I ride my 3rd H.D. and love to ride. I wave to all others and like it, it's me. I have the best of the best for me, not to show off. I like my bike and keep it shined up and ready at all times, for ME! I grew up poor, and take great pride in what I own, anal? Maybe, but I am what I am......American Motorcycle Ryder!

Put it this way, if I have to be dirty looking, tattoo'd, have a chained wallet, wear worn out boots, and ride a bike that never gets cleaned...then  I guess I'm not a biker.  If my bike has to built from spare parts...then I guess I'm not a biker.  If I have to be uneducated...then I guess I'm not a biker.  I guess that these last 38-40 years that I've been riding a motorcycle have just been thrown away, since I will apparently never be a biker.  If I'm not a biker, then what am I?  I ride whenever possible, and when I'm not riding, my spare time is spent cleaning my bike, repairing or installing parts, reading and writing about bikes online, or searching out new parts for my bike.  If anyone asks, I think I'll just tell them I am a "hardcore riding enthusiast".  If they want to toss that in the biker category, so be it.  If not, I could not care less.  Maybe I need to get some patches made..."I'm not a biker, I'm a Hardcore Riding Enthusiast".  Then, at least we can differentiate the two groups, so the public can be pissed at 2 groups instead of one for loud pipes.

wanted to chime in on this with nothing more than an offering of quotes from folks who consider, and are considered, themselves "bikers".

Someone on here has a group buy for a Screamin Eagle decal or something of the sort for the pickup back window.  I just saw the thread this morning.

What makes me a biker? I guess its because I started riding mini bikes at age 6, and got my first real motorcycle at age 8. (Yamaha mini enduro) My first Harley was a 1979 Shovel head Sportster. And I currently own 4 Harleys. No, scratch all of that. I think being a biker is 50% what you ride and 90% mental. (yogi beara spin off!)

At the risk of upsetting Silver-Black as I do not ride a HD at this time ,I know what makes a biker.
#1 Ape hangers that make you look like you are under arrest.
#2 Highway pegs that make you look like you preparing for a Gynecological Exam
#3 The belief that your brand of Motorcycle is the only one that is worth owning.
#4 Thinking you are better than the rest and being a dick head to other bike riders.
#5 Parking your bike in the Living room,
#6 Going to the bike club meeting in your leathers but driving your car.
#7 Making your wife wear a jacket that says she is your property.

Not meaning to offend anyone, but women can be biker chics or biker babes or biker b$#&ches, but not just bikers.  Should I be scared for saying that?

                                          :bananarock: :bananarock:

Just to clarify I never said these things were good or bad they are just things that will let you know if your a biker or if you need to work a little harder. :huepfenlol2:

Not offended. Let's see...... I'm to old to be a chic...... not a babe either, so that leaves b$#&ch. Guess that describes me.  ;)

“Augusta and Adeline Van Buren (related to President van Buren) grew up as Society Girls who eventually married, raise families, and held jobs. But that’s not the whole story. Raised in New York City, they sound like stereotypes of their time. Except that on July 4, 1916 they left from Sheepshead Bay in Brooklyn and trekked west on two Power Plus Indian motorcycles equipped with gas headlights.

They crossed the Rockies and the western desert near the great salt lake, reaching Los Angeles on September 8. On their motorcycling journey across the American continent they reached Pike’s Peak Colorado just a year after the first rough, dangerous trail had been cut to it’s 14,109 foot summit. Taking on the challenge, they became the first women to ride that trail on any kind of motorized vehicle. On this epic journey they crashed, fought fatigue, ruts, and mud. And as Bikers, they experienced police harassment, in small towns they passed through along the way, for dressing in men’s leather riding suits. Obviously, this marathon motorcycle experience from any perspective qualifies them as Bikers. After all, even before the Depression they undertook a true Motorcycle Gypsy Experience. So, the question is,
had Augusta and Adeline lived the motorcycle lifestyle? Or had they lived the motorcycling experience?

What we have here is a contradiction in terms: “Lifestyle” versus “Life Experience.”
Doing the arithmetic you get “Style” versus “Experience”. Words mean something or at least they’re supposed to. It’s basically very simple. Webster defines the word “style” as Designation or Title, a manner of expression. And lifestyle is defined by, 1- getting a Designation (recognition as a Biker), 2- getting a Title (call a Biker), 3- expressing a manner (acts like a Biker). Experience is very simply “the act of doing.” Hence “living the motorcycle experience” is basically doing it, as the Van Buren sisters did. Perhaps a more concise term would be “Biker Experience. Lets face it, someone who has “Biker Experience” is far more interesting to talk to than someone who simply expresses “Biker Style.” Wouldn’t it have been great to talk with Augusta and Adeline Van Buren?”

First, I want to know how they got more than 2 months off work.  It sounds like they actually rode for a year.  Let's see, the cross country trip to LA took them about 65 days.  Assuming about a 3000 mile trip, that's a little over 46 miles per day.  I have no idea how fast their bikes went back then, but even if they only went 15 mph, they only rode 3 hrs per day.  I'm guessing those bikes were faster than that.  So maybe they rode an hour a day.  Bikers...I think not.  Biker experience...absolutely.

You're assuming there were roads and bridges.  The model T was still fairly new.  Roads and gas stations left a great deal to be desired in 1916.  Also, WW1 hadn't ended yet and I'm sure what fuel was available was likely rationed.

Dave, you officially got a blasting coming if we ever hook up. my Wife saw that and went ape chit. lol. She rides and average of 9500 miles a year, on her bike. has at Least 7  Tatts, and would stand toe to toe with anyone in a good bar fight, seen her do it before, the guy almost bled to death.
But when she is doing HER work thing, you'd never know.
So, In my final determination, What Makes you a Biker? It's not how you see yourself, its how others see you.

I always figured what defined a biker was something inside that person involving a spiritual conection with their bike, the road, and brother/sisterhood of other bikers.

It seems nowadays the public perception of a biker spans a full range of stereotypes, iconic celebrities, and just plain hype by the media and motorcycle & accessory industry.

I think of it as just another label people can easily attach to a person or themselves based on several observations including the fact or impression that they ride a bike. Sometimes it the style, type, and/or brand of the bike; the black leather jacket, gloves, boots, chaps, tats, piercings, and/or attitude.

I don't think of myself as a "biker", but I'm sure others might look at me as one when I'm out there on a ride. I feel more like a biker when other bikers make me feel like I'm one of them, and that is something that just happens naturally without someone having to make a point of it.

Are you an organ donor?  It's important for us to know before Eureka Springs.

Somebody must have hacked into my computer.  I didn't type any of that.  Yea, that's the ticket.  I deny it to the end.  Are you planning the ride to Eureka Springs?  Heading through PA to get there?  I'm hoping to be able to make it and it could be a long ride on my own.

I believe the route has me going through Ohio to Kentucky.  It's certainly in the general direction of western PA.  Right now, the chances look a little less than 50% but I'm optimistic.  GH and I may hook up on the way also.  I'd like to take a day or two in the Lexington area for some bourbon tours on the way home.

I just realized where Clarence is...I used to live in Buffalo...and realized that you would likely head through OH, which obviously isn't a problem for me.  If I am able to go at the time, that will mean I'm free to go wherever I please and stay away as long as I want.  But then that's still a few months away, so who knows what anyone's situation will be by then.  If you find you are able to go, keep me in mind.  I can always shoot over into OH to meet up.

I've seen women riding there own motorcycles but I don't think I've ever seen a woman biker. Sorry girls. Thats just my take.

Well, most the Bikers did not ride to the January Chapter meeting, as it was 17 degrees out.  Most live in the town the meeting is.  My wife rode the 136 mile round trip.  She has put 22,340 miles on her 20 month old 883L.

I am willing to bet that is more mile than most put on a year.  The bike had 13,700 miles on it the day it was one year old.

Am I a biker?? I don't know, and don't really care.

I bought and ride my bike because it's a hobby that I like to participate in.  Ride it when I want, with whom I want, to where I want. It is as simple as that.

I'd much rather be recognized and respected for being a man, husband, father, grandfather, and friend.

bik⋅er   /ˈbaɪkər/ Show Spelled Pronunciation  [bahy-ker] Show IPA Pronunciation

–noun 1. a person who rides a bicycle, motorcycle, or motorbike, esp. in competition or as a hobby.
2. Informal. a member of a motorcycle gang

So, if you ride one, you're a biker.  If you are a HOG member (isn't that the biggest gang around?) then you're a biker.  Hate to burst everyone's bubble, but I think we are all bikers on this forum.

I ride one... I'm a member of HOG... guess that makes me a biker.

But... HOG... as a gang??? I dunno... that's a stretch for me...

This is way to simple! You own and ride the chit out of a motorcycle, YOU'RE A BIKER!!! You own one and trailer it everywhere to park it on Main St, YOU'RE A POSER!!! You don't own one but dress up like you do, YOU'RE A SIDEWALK COMMANDO!!! Really all there is to this! ;D ;)

I love motorcycles and love to ride them. (1967 to present)
Does this make me a Biker?
I don't know and really don't care. (too old to care)
Just enjoying myself and always making new friends.
