I keep saying I'm going to go, but I've never been fond of large crowds in small areas, or big events. But anyways, how hard is it to get rooms in the area, and how much can you expect to pay?

as a rule of thumb, if its a Hotel you want, need to book 1-2 years in advance. Expect to Pay 200% of more per night over the normal rate. Many homes for rent during rally week which is also an option when your in a pack, i.e. 8. Also, the hotels tend to block their rooms in 3-4 day packages. as for crowds, you can get away from them by staying in the surrounding towns, i.e. Deadwood, etc...but the roadways are full of riders...which is some of the appeal of the rally...

I have stayed at Hog Heaven camp ground in the past. Also stayed at the Iron Horse Inn in Whitewood. That was very nice with covered bike parking. and it is located between Sturgis and Deadwood. The last 3 times I have stayed at the Buffalo Chip. The on site activities and nightly concerts ALMOST make up for the 25 minutes it takes you to get out of the campground to the main road Before waiting through 20 MORE minutes of traffic to get to the other side of town. Almost.  And in case you guys forgot about my trip there this year, heres a video clip, and Yes, thats my Harley truck in the back ground getting pummeled with baseball size hail!

I have stayed at Chris' Campground in Spearfish.  Right above the canyon.  And Days End in Sturgis.  Staying at a cabin in Custer State Park next year.

The first year I went to Sturgis  :drink:  I stayed in Spearfish City Campground (1991) is it still there?  :nixweiss:  Was a very busy campground, second trip I stayed at the KOA Campground in Spearfish (1993) just a big field with a pool. No prior booking was done either time just dropped in and set up camp,  :2vrolijk_21:  not too sure if you can do that now?   :nixweiss:

Been there twice and stayed at hotels in the Rapid City area both times, you have to book them early in the year and as mentioned above they have minimum stay requirements and jack up the rates.

I'm with Larry on this one, the campgrounds might be fun but after multiple days on the road i prefer a nice comfy hotel.

Last 13 years at the Franklin Hotel in Deadwood, before that we rented a house in Nemo for ten years, before that we camp the first ten years in Spearfish at Chris Mountain view campground--33 years, and hope to keep riding to many more. Just seems a part of my DNA when August rolls around I get the urge the Black Hills are calling, and the sound of our Harleys is so addicting once a year. I am signed up again for next year.

GrandStay Residential Suites in Rapid City. Newer hotel, great rooms, reasonable prices and a good buffet breakfast too.

Seems to be fully booked already.

Ride safely,
