After 27 years I changed
« on: November 11, 2014, 09:47:27 PM »

I started riding Harleys with a 1987 FLHTC then in 1990 A FLHTCU after that a 1993 Anniv, 1998 Anniv and 2008 CVO Anniv. With the heat and engine noise I decided to change bikes. I tried a 2014 Harley Ultra Limited, they have changed the handling of these bikes it just did not feel right in the turns. I tried a Goldwing and with a 16 shoe I could not shift it. I then tried a BMW K 1600 Gtl and I was sold. They offered me a scream deal on a 2014 BMW K 1600 GTL Exclusive. I brought it home today and at this time I am a true believer in this bike. No vibration, no heat, unbelievable power and handling. And to much technology to go into. No I am not bashing Harley, but they need to get rid of the CEO they have now. No mater what you say a Temp on a production line at low wages and no benefits will not give a crap how a bike goes together. And how they have cheapen engine parts is a crime. I will keep reading post on this forum to see if they make changes. Ride Safe

There is a reason for that. Local dealers in So Cal having very difficult time selling them with them stacking up in inventory and on route. Fantastic bikes with amazing performance no doubt but whenever a dealer is offering a "screaming deal" when the model is brand new, "screaming" isn't cheap enough when you go to resell them. I totally get that comparing the metrics of Exclusive vs the CVO side by side that the BMW will win in every category but if you go on the BMW forums, you will not find threads about how much over MSRP they are selling for.
Really not defending Harley as I have all the same issues with various quality issues as everyone else but lets be fair about all sides..

I do not think that selling Harleys over MSRP should be viewed as a feather in the hat of the MoCo. If anything it is just one more reason that pushes people like Lone Rider away. The bike comparisons aside. Lets just talk company ethics. Off hand I cannot think of many companies that has the history as the MoCo for price gouging. If it was products that the general public used all hell would break loose and there would be government investigations.  But because it is just bikers being raped no one cares, therefore the MoCo can do as they please. Maybe Lone Rider is doing what we all should be doing...but we know that will never happen so the MoCo has no reason to change its ways.

I agree with not buying these anymore after all the problems i had with my 2007 se ultra, the only thing that keeps me on this one is my dealer woodstock harley in woodstock il has stood up and taken care of things where harley has let the quality go down. Thumbs up for Woodstock Hd.

Riders appear to like their 1600 GTL's lone-rider, I'm certain you will as well. BMW has had their share of problems, but they may be more proactive in responding to customers than the MoCo. I investigated these bikes also and knew they'd take my Ultra in trade from talking with the dealership. I wasn't seriously considering making the deal however, just gathering information.

They wouldn't be selling over MSRP if some jackwagons weren't buying them over MSRP. So having said that, if BMW isn't selling over MSRP that isn't a knock on Harley, it's a knock on BMW IMO.

The BMW is a fine machine. I just don't like the style and it wouldn't feel anywhere near the same vibe the Harley experience does IMO. That will always keep me away. It looks like a touring crotch rocket.

The BMW is a fine machine. It looks like a touring crotch rocket.

And it is, except for the GS Models.

Last weekend the West Coast Bunch had a Meet In The Middle in San Simeon, CA. Out of the 9 NorCal Bikes that came down, 4 were BMWs. Never fazed any of us, we all had a good time. Out of the four, two were replacement bikes for sold or totaled Harley's, and two were chosen as an the preferred option that weekend, meaning they decided not to ride the Harley that day.

So, getting back to the original 4 post poster (don't know why I felt compelled to mention that he only has 4 posts to his name) like other members he might have been able to have both if he wanted.

A member since 2008 and only 4 posts. To me that's like;

1. Hello, this is me
2. Hello, this is my bike
3. How do you,..........
4. Going now, bye.

I need to find a job, my head is too damn busy with stuff like this.

I just saw a CVO for $3K under msrp at a dealer that traditionally lists at $5K over and resale on HD's pretty much suck too if you've tried to sell one lately.  I just led the group to the CVO MITM where four out of the nine bikes were BMW's, all previous HD owners. We have a late model BMW which is superior to our bikes in most every way. Having owned HD's for over fourty years, I will most likely always have one, but not as an only bike, Our current Jap and European bikes are far more reliable. Besides, life's too short to only enjoy one style of riding.

Can you spell troll?   >:(   The OP posts four times in six years yet feels compelled to tell us he's leaving!  I can't discern his point for all his spelling and grammatical errors.  Are there still devices that do not have spell / grammar check?   He doesn't buy a Gold Wing because he could not shift it but could shift the BMW?  Let me activate my "suspension of disbelief."  I've ridden both and the shifting is pretty similar though I don't have a size 16 (if that wasn't another typo) shoe.  BTW, in a recent article in Motorcycle USA, BMW's were the least reliable brand tested.  I've had Porsches and Ford trucks for decades without a single problem but if you read the discussion forums, you'd think both were the least reliable ever.

Thank God we live in a free market system.  Complaining about whether a dealer sells over or under MSRP is woefully naive, if not socialist.  What part of "suggested" retail price do people not get?  If any of you were told you could only sell your bike (or anything else) for $5,K less that the market would bear (i.e. people would pay), you'd accept that?  I don't believe you.  The motorcycle market is seasonal as shown by the companies' quarterly reports.  The is true even in So CA.  It has to be hard to sell any bike over MSRP with snow on the ground.  Manufacturers try to tell dealers that selling over MSRP leads to customer dissatisfaction when they come back to trade in but that argument is rarely successful.  BTW, I used to represent car dealers and have litigated these issues.  Finally, does anyone really care what someone else rides?   8)    :huepfenlol2:

Greg,

Thanks for putting into words so bluntly that which my mind figured out a long time ago. But I gave him the benefit of the doubt as 6 years is a long time for a troll to lay in wait for one exit posting.

As long as he's happy, that's all that matters.

There was a time during gas price crisis that Toyota and Honda were asking for and getting market premiums on their offerings. There are other car makers with specific models of interest who are able and do the same. So MoCo are not the only opportunistic capitalist bastards in this world  :D
