Title: Compression releases - change manual to automatic?
Post by: porthole on September 28, 2013, 09:52:15 AM
As the title says, is there an option to replace manual compression releases typically installed next to the spark plug with an electronic version?

My engine has always been a bit hard starting hot so I had them added when I did the head work. Good choice, makes for a much easier starting. But I found I use hem all the time now due to the increased compression.

Duane there would be too much to change and you still may not get them to work. The manual ones work just fine. You will get use to it real quick. You may try just using the front one. I know I can and Ole Punkin starts just fine!!!

I have had both manual and auto. Actually I prefer the manual as I really can't tell if the auto's are working or not. Where I could always hear that "sound" from the manuals. I just don't hear that sound from the auto's. Maybe my auto's aren't working. :nixweiss:

I started with the manuals then put the autos on my 124.  Very easy to wire them to the starting circuit.  I loved the autos!  No more burnt fingers, forgetting to push the buttons, etc.  The catch is that my heads need to be machined for them.  I don't know what you are running but the machining is something that you need to consider if you want to do this.

I install them all the time. I designed and had the tooling made to drill the heads for the HD ACR valves. This does take removing the heads and quite a bit of expense plus rewiring and an ECM update by the dealer or in the TTS/SERT software if this is a late model. If not the starter solenoid trigger will work to trigger them.
These ACRs will work on most of the heads but not the early CVO casting.

Guess I should have added more to the original post

I am asking about replacing the already installed manuals with an electronic version, which would be wired into the solenoid circuit.

So, existing hole, which I am guessing is a standard location using a jig, electric releases.

I have the cylinder bridges on, so it is a bit more difficult to get to them. I was thinking about electrics because I now use them all the time.

I have no problem hearing them now - especially when they stick open  :nixweiss:

Are these installed in the center instead of next to the plugs?

im sure he`s machining them in the stock location (center of head)that's where we put them(S&S or OEM HD).their way to big to be installing next to the plug.ide just stick with the manuals units though

Simpler solution might be to just Dremel a bit on your bridges Duane.  I've done this to quite a few sets over the years.

Ah yup, did that.

Something to consider. I made the holes while the heads were on the bench.

Vertically, the CR's are easy to access.
Under the tank and on an angle though, bit tougher to access.
