Has anybody tried to install rear speakers on their tour pak? [smiley=nixweiss.gif]My dealer says he doesn't think it can be done.
-
Why doesn't he think it can be done? Be very leery of your dealer......he doesn't know his product.
Your bike is prewired. You'd have to get the speaker boxes that bolt to your tour pak and then the speakers....it's not uncommon for Electra Glide Classics and even Standards to put speakers on the tour pak. My partner put quick release plugs in the wires so that he could take his trunk off the bike.
-
From what i can find out the stereo is only wired for front speakers, and would have to be returned to to vender to have this added if they would do it. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]They called spoc @ Hd and got no answer one why or the other.
-
Mr. Magoo I've got a friend that works in the offices at World Headquarters....I'll shoot him an email and get back to you on this.
It never occured to me that they would have wired the Screamin Eagle bike differently than the other Electra Glides (as far as wiring goes).
-
They tell me it's the new stereo that was put in the screamin eagle electra glide is only designed for front speaker. Don't care if it can't fade front to rear but she wants music.
-
I'm going to be in the same boat, when mine gets here in Feb. Hell, I already ordered the tour pak and speaker boxes.
I also know that the SEEG has a different stereo than any other Electra Glide. Ours has a built in amplifier and the others put the amplifier under the tour pak.
If you're willing to give up the seperation, then I would think we could splice in to the front speaker wires. Somebody who is a little more savy on the electronics can probably give us some direction here.
I can't get a response to my email fast enough, thow.
-
Looking at the radio today, it is true! You can not add rear speakers to our bikes as their is no external outputs to connect to the external amplifier. If one were to try and connect to the rear amplifer with the leads to the front speakers you would have some matching (impeadance and the such) to really get it to work.
Just not worth it! :'(
-
Someone is not going to be happy to learn that. :'( Still hoping that I may be able to send it to the vendor to fix this.
-
I still haven't got the "official" response on this yet (I did on the in-dash oil temp guage and I'll post that in that thread). I do know that the stereo in the SEEG is different from all other stereos in that it has an internal amplifier. Does that mean that we still can't splice in the rear two speakers (via a quick disconnect lead) and just live without fade??? I don't know.....one of those electronic wizards will have to answer that question.
-
No sounds like something that you would have to open the unit up to do, and then install rear leads out if possible. Where there a will theres a way.
-
You could ditch the stereo and purchase the Ultra enhanced stereo (is it 70watts x 4?) have a CB to boot.
But, due (on our bikes) to the amplifier being installed in the head unit, you can't take the L and R outputs and feed two seperate amps.
-
That would be an option, but you would think you could get the stock one fixed. Who wants a $1500 stereo sitting on a shelf. I find it hard to believe HD didn't think we would want rear speakers.
-
I got an email from my friend at HD yesterday. He got a response back regarding rear speaker hook up on our bikes, however, it was incunclusive. He's digging deeper but HD is shut down till Dec. 5th so it will be after that.
He's also going to try to find out the best performance exhaust for our bike (no, it will not necessarily be HD.....he has a lot of aftermarket stuff on his bike). He's also going to try to find out the ship date for the orange and black bikes, too.
-
Any word yet from your connection?

Thats sounds like the same vague response we got from spoc when my guy called HD. Would assume they are talking to the supplier.
-
CVO's are done under Willie G and his crew.
-
I heard the stereo on the bike today while the two other bikes were revving their engines with some Vance and Hines pipes and I heard it fine.
Sounds like the upgraded stereo makes up for the lack of two back speakers.
I will be fine with just two front speakers [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]
-
John tell me if you can hear it, riding across the desert for eight hours, in the middle of a pack of bikes?? That's when I'll know that I have the right stereo. [smiley=biggthumpup.gif]
-
Ha Ha she didn't see didn't think that was funny. She wants rear speaker or [smiley=confused5.gif].

Yah it's a bitch makin happy, and if she isn't happy its a bad day. :(
-
O.K. just got an email direct from HD Headquarters. Now this was an email sent to a friend from the "sound" people and it might make more sense to somebody who understands this stuff, so I'll type it verbatum.....
"It's technically possible to do what he wants (add rear speakers), but there's no actual 'canned' solution.
Inside the radio, the high power amplifier operates in parallel with the front speaker amps. (The radio is the 2-channel classic with the ESS amplifier added). The base radio amp is turned on so that someone could potentially add rear speakers.
There are a few issues with actually adding the rear speakersharness:
-A new harness would need to be developed to take the speaker output from the radio to the added rear speakers.
-Fade control: There would be no fade control (since you are essentially using four front speakers).
-Amp level: The rear speakers would have power output at the base radio level, (unless you added a two channel ESS rear speaker kit.)
If you pop the fairing off you will see two spade terminals wire tied to the harness near each speaker. You will need to run these out to rear speakers with the above caveats."
Any feedback from you guys? I think I actuallly understand it better having re-read it several times in order to type it word for word. It's coming to me s-l-o-w-l-y! lol
-
Does anybody know who makes HD radios it maybe easier to get an answer from them, it kinda sounds do able.
-
Magoo that's who this answer came from. He didn't know the answer, so he wrote to them.
To answer your question, I don't know who "them" is.
-
OK good enough, wonder how long I can stall telling her about the speakers :'(
-
Speaking of speakers,
A friend said he saw an Ultra with speakers installed in the the Leg Fairing compartment.
Anyone heard of that??
Think it would sound better with that setup?
You wouldn't need the fade, you would just have more "in your face sounds"

Well like I said earlier, if it has to be replaced I don't want it sitting around gathering dust.

To JCZ and all the other SEEG owners. I have an alternative that I have already used on my V-rod Road Rod and I will also be using soon on my '01 SERG.
I plan on doing a post on the complete project in the next week or so. Basicly you can replace your HD sounds with a Blaupunkt head unit that will play MP3 disks (about 150 songs on one CD) Have four channels of 50 watts each with balance and fader, have COMPLETE AND ENHANCED funtionality from your existing hand controls, plus add a CD changer if you really think you need more than 150 songs without having to pop in a new disk. Of course you can also add a totally hidden Sattellite tuner. Everything controls form the factory HD fingertip control levers. DVD too if you are really crazy.
You can do all this (except DVD) for less than one HD head unit..including 4 top quality speakers, head unit, Sattellite radio etc. The HD in-dash CD player costs $800!
I have to write it up and post it...next week or later this week.....if anyone is interested?????????
-
Ok you have my undivided attention, will wait for your post. Will the unit be water proof.[smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Ok you have my undivided attention,

The new Ultra Classic is intrerested as well. I concur with the water/shock proof comments.

if we are not spoiled enough with our fairings, windshield and radios...we now can wahtch a movie (in flight) also [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

OK Guys,
I will shoot some close-up pictures today and post a write up tonight if I don't work too late.
Meanwhile, Check out this link to dragonfly.com where they offer 6 1/2 REAR Speaker pods. Not only will the larger speakers sound better, these units have no ugly switch cutouts like the stock HD pods. These units are $100 each where the HD units were about $150 each. Personally NEITHER are WORTH $50 bucks each!
I have a brand new set of the HD units. I will sell them for $50 bucks each..Yes I paid the $150 each or thereabouts. There's a sucker born every minute

Hey guys,
HELP!!!
I took photos today and did a pretty good write up on the use of aftermarket sound systems with HD hand controls.
My problem is I did it on Word and inserted the photos into the document. I can't post it!
What do I do to not waste all the work I did? Can I email it to you guys on your direct email?
I have JCZ's private email I think, so I will send it to him. May he can figure it out!
Meanwhile, I will sned it any of you who are interested by way of direct email. Just send me your email address to me at garyal@attbi.com.
Sorry about my stupidity. Is there a way I can post it on the internet somewhere and then just post the link here?
Let me know
Gary

Thanks for the help Cabo! ;D

Gary the file exceeds the max. size to be able to post in it's entirety.

gary-would you recommend upgrading the 2 speakers that are stock on the 04 seeg. wondering if it,s worth the effort.-------ak
-
AK,
Try them out first. If you can hear them at 80 mph, they are OK.
However, I checked the specs today and it says "premium sound with integral amp". I suspect the speakers are what they sell from HD as "Premium Speakers". If this is the case, When I went to buy the aftermarket JL Audio Speakers, I borrowed one of these Premium speakers from the dealer to take down and match the size. The JL Audio weighed about three times as much for the same size speaker. (much bigger magnet)
I bet really good aftermarket speakers will

JCZ,
I know..really dumb of me, sorry 'bout that.
Cabo posted a link to the file on page 3 of this thread. Here's to Cabo. [smiley=beerchug.gif]
I was in Modesto yesterday with a buddy of mine, looking at some bikes.
I saw the Purple '04 SEEG......WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's a good thing it was already sold or I would have one too. [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif]

Anybody come up with the rear speaker solution yet?
-
Back on Jan 13 Garya1 posted about a Blaupunkt head unit but that is all he ever said, don't know if he is around or dropped out. I have had a nice talk with a lady at the place that makes the stereos for HD and she said it was not possible to add rear speaker like we want and that there are NO plans to make it happen. :'( . She was not happy [smiley=confused5.gif] not sure what to do now. Will probably have to look at an enhanced stereo system if she still wants rear speaker, she said she will let me know after the first ride. [smiley=confused5.gif].

Here's the response from the horses mouth..... Subject: SEEG rear speakers
Hello J.C.,
The Road Rumble 40(r) would not be compatible with the SEEG radio because
Harley-Davidson radios do not have low level RCA outputs that this amplifier
is designed to utilize.
The Amplified CD radio used on the 2004 Screaming Eagle Electra Glide
FLHTCSE is unique to this model motorcycle. The SEEG radio has 4 ohm
speakers in the fairing and an Enhanced Sound System (ESS) amplifier
contained inside the radio driving the speakers. All other stock (non SEEG)
radios use 8 ohm speakers.
The SEEG radio differs in other ways from the Ultra and Classic radios. The
outputs from the standard radio amplifiers are internally diverted from the
black radio connector to the internal ESS amplifier. This leaves the
standard speaker output wires in the interconnect harness in the fairing
with no output. As a result, rear speakers can be added but, not as easily
to the SEEG motorcycle as to other models.
To add rear speakers to a SEEG:
* Install the King Tourpak and Four Speaker ESS kit, part number 77194-02A.
* The 2004 Amplified CD SEEG radio must be replaced with a 2004 Classic
radio, Harley-Davidson part number 76164-04.
NOTE: Remove the CVO Audio harness and 15A radio amplifier fuse in the fuse
panel (harness includes a 23 pin Grey connector, speaker wires, ground wire
to left ground stud and power wire from the fuse block). This wiring harness
is no longer needed and should be removed from the motorcycle when the ESS
harness is installed.
Using the wrong speaker wires (a possibility if the CVO audio harness is not
removed) will result in a no sound condition. Locate the interconnect
harness speaker wires which were previously unused and taped out of the way.
Connect them to the newly installed ESS wiring harness per the instruction
sheet. These speaker wires are LTGN/W and W/O on the left side and LTGN/BK
and GY/R on the right side. Using these wires will route the output of the
new Classic radio to the Four Speaker ESS amplifier.
If you have any further questions, I will be happy to assist you.
Best regards,
John Smith

OUCH!!!!!
All I can say here is my motor work didn't cost as much as this is going to!!!!!!!!!

JCZ looks like you where able to talk with someone who finally had an answer. Question is do you need to buy the amp with the ultra head unit (aka enhanced sound system). [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Guys;
Some time ago I spoke to Tim Conway, the Parts Manager from Reno H-D. My question had to do with the intercom and CB features, but the answer was the same. After speaking to HD, he learned that the head unit and the harness had to be changed. He can be contacted at 775-329-2913 and is very knowledgeable and helpful. :)

AGAIN FOR THOSE WHO MAY HAVE MISSED THIS...
I have no desire to have 4 speakers. I have a CD radio unit from an Ultra. 4 channel and CB integral. I want to get one of the CVO Electra Glide radios because all I want is an amplified 2 channel. If anyone is looking for an Ultra Radio and wants to trade, drop me a line.
-
I think we are all after the enhanced sound system, or at least I'm looking for it. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

I'm very curious as to why you would trade an Ultra Classic Radio.

I have a Road Glide and wanted a CD player - it came with a tape.
