Down, but not on a bike...
« on: August 06, 2014, 03:30:54 PM »

Given my lifestyle and the fact that I commute, and recreate on my bike, you would figure the odds are that I would go down, HARD at some point. While I've had a couple of spills over the years, and even a couple on the racetrack, I've always walked away.

So.. Monday morning on my way to work I stop at a 7-11 convenience store for bottled water and monster energy drink (morning routine). Clock on my bike shows 0643...  Walk in the store, turn right, to the refrigerated cabinets for my stuff. That gathered I walked toward the check-out line.

As I approached the line, I passed the slurpee machine. Slipped on an apparent wet spot and down I went... the last thing I remember was feeling my feet slip, a blur of rushing images, then looking up, seeing an attractive brunette on my left and a guy I recognize as a regular customer on my right, a drink machine behind him and fluorescent lights overhead. I feel cold floor under me and a warm spot around the back of my head. A few questions later (do you know your name, what day it was and where I was I pulled my phone out of my pocket. My phone said it was 0654... was I really our cold for almost 10 minutes?. apparently yes. EMTs were not on scene yet, so I called work to tell them I would not be there and a brief of the situation, then called my wife so she could come to the nearest hospital.

EMT's arrive... same questions, they get me to sit up... I feel like I've been hit by a truck!.. a few minutes, I stand up... dizzy as all hell. The EMT's are trying to get me to let them transport me.. (FYI the ER is a mile up the road). I decline, indicating that if I was to leave my bike, even locked in this lot, It would probably NOT be there if people saw the owner get hauled away in an ambulance. I promised to be a good boy and get myself to the ER ASAP.

I call my wife and tell her I am headed to the ER, and to meet me there. Put a beanie over my bandaged head so I don't look like Frankenstein on the trip to the ER.

I get on my bike, equilibrium obviously off, and make the trek to the ER.. the most adventurous mile I have ever ridden!

I pull up to the ER... walk in the door, I'm taking the beanie off my head and the security guard asks me if I needed help.. I point at the bandage on my head and he waves me into the reception area... the nurses rustle me to the reception desk and check me in, then out comes a wheel chair... wheel me into the back.

First attendant comes in, I tell them its a "Y" shaped cut about 2" (based on what the EMT's told me).. they check it out, concur, and tell me I'll need a CT scan. ... while waiting, another nurse comes in and looks at my vest and asks me if I was wearing a helmet? WTF? I tell her, that this is NOT a motorcycle related injury and why is that question being asked? She continues on about how helmets reduce injury. I say yes they do, but is it reasonable to expect everyone to wear a helmet in a 7-11, how about when you're walking down the street?, or when you're driving a car? Remember this was NOT a motorcycle accident. DO NOT ASSUME! ( a lightbulb goes off and she shuts up )

CT scan, orderly cleans wound. ER Doc comes in, he is a motorcycle guy... says he heard the conversation.. agrees with me... I tell I wear gear by my choice.. he is the same. Even though he is an ER Doc he believes in the right to choose versus overregulation of personal choices. (Great guy, rides a 51 Triumph with a girder front end.) Anyway, nothing wrong in my head (hahahahaha) so he'll staple me up and send me on my way... OK, as far as no bleeding, etc. no pain meds, so I can be observed. Nothing that may make me loopier than normal.

2 days later I still feel like I've been hit by a truck. 12 staples in my head, Y shaped cut that will leave a scar, continuing headaches, blurred vision and nausea.

Here's a pic....

Good to hear you should be ok, but, coming from a public safety point of view - you should have taken the ambulance ride.

Most people don't realize slip and fall is one of the major injury causes. Glad to hear you are on the mend. Don't rush the recovery, head injuries are nothing to play with.

Porthole, I mean this with no disrespect:

Screw public safety... There were sensitive documents in the bike that needed to be secure.

At least at the ER my wife would be there and I could make arrangements to have the bike moved from there.

If you knew the neighborhood, you wouldn't leave your bike there either.

Like I said, the ER is 1 mile up the road. Was it the best choice? Probably not, but all things considered, it was the most prudent to maintain the security of the documents in my bike and keep my bike from being stolen in the process.

Had the CT scan identified a problem and I was admitted, my wife has a list of people to call to pick up the bike and take it home... That convenience store was NOT the place to leave the bike and he hauled off in an ambulance. Trust me that I know this neighborhood that people WILL take advantage of a bad situation.

Well it is good that the bike is ok and the documents are secure. As far as you go, that looks like a nasty whack on the back of your head. Take everything very slowly. Head injury's are not to be taken lightly.

My wife had a fall similarly to yours and we had to watch her for several days to make sure she was gonna be ok.

As an update: I stayed home from work for three days... then went back... as my job is administrative more than physical.

This is how big the lump was:

Before they stapled it up:

Went back on the Thursday, yes, on my bike. (Don't have a cage, sold them all a couple months back since I wasn't using them)

Follow up with my doc, says see you in a week... then two weeks, and every two weeks since. Staples are out...

Neurologists, Earliest apt is October 24th. As this is a third party claim lots of docs wont touch it for fear of being subpoenaed for court... WTF?

In the meantime, no pain meds (alcohol excluded) until the neurologist can see me.

Migraines nuts enough to close my eyes involuntarily... these really suck, but I have found that Salonpas cut into 3/4" squares over each temple seems to help the symptoms and makes them tolerable.

After week 3, (3rd visit) doc says.. "I know you're not gonna like this, but with the equilibrium issues, and everything else, buy yourself a cage (car) to get yourself through this time. He about died from the evil stare, but I knew he was right. So off to the classifieds it was... I thought about a little car... nothing I liked. (yeah, I'm a picky (and cheap) bastard.

I finally decide I'll buy an older truck in good shape.

This is what I found... I had garnished the nickname "project therapy"

So, since I cant ride my bike, a call to Fullsac went out and a stage II setup is enroute... Thanks Steve and Cammie!

Even if I cant ride it It'll be ready for me when I can!

Its been 4 months... it took almost 3 just to get to see the Neurologist (There is a shortage of Neurologists in Hawaii and the whole third party claim issue had people running scared.)

So, after all of this.. MRI indicates no bleeding in the brain. I have a healthy, "normal" (haha) 48 year old male brain.

Vestibular therapy has been ordered to help correct this.

SO far, no rhyme or reason to the onset of the dizziness, nausea, headaches. The migraines are under control with meds.

Still under orders to not ride the bike...  :soapbox:

Now looking for a second Neurologist for second opinion.

I've been able to get on the bike for short rides but the migraines simply do not go away with enough consistency to ride regularly.

Dont like the migraine meds (will medical marijuana help?)  :cherry:

Happy Easter!

Weed will help any situation, but your head will still hurt.

Its now been 9+ months...

I called my medical insurance carrier regarding subrogation as the $10K of liability coverage has run its course and now I'm getting bills.

My medical will cover those bills until I get a settlement (at which time I reimburse them.) Works for me.

... This will also make it easier to get an appointment to see a second opinion neurologist

Still working on the second neurologist.

7-11's insurance adjusters have called and want to offer a settlement.

I have finally spoken with attorneys that will review my case on Wednesday.

Fortunately I have 2 years from date of injury to file.

I am still awaiting a surgical evaluation for my lower back.

That happens in March

So, finally after many months of therapy, medical denials and attorney meetings and other drama, I'm finally heading to surgery tomorrow for my herniated L4-L5 disc.
Which is the worst of the injuries. There is still the issue of my neck injury, as well as my shoulder. But as long as I can walk without worrying about falling over I'll be happy again. Nine months is the total recovery time... In the meantime I traded my Maple and Black CVO Road Glide in for a Gunship Grey 2018....

It's called Motivation!...

So surgery seems to have gone well. Sugeon says I'm a little taller, a have strange set of incision holes in my back. One on the left flank where most of the work was done, and four smaller ones where, due to my intended use, (riding) he wanted to be 100% sure the surgery would be effective. So they added two straps and four anchors to actually tie the vertebrae together in addition to the bone cage.

(The procedure is XLIF)

Walked in Wednesday about noon, due to other procedural delays on other patients mine didn't start until 7 pm. I woke up in recovery needing to pee, or so I thought. (I guess not.) They wheeled me into a private room, two days of both occupational abd physical therapy and did well with both.

Fortunately my years of back safety in the workplace pays off, knowing how to keep your spine straight to minimize load on it.

Told them I've had a lot of practice over the last three years!

Late Friday evening I'm going home!

Call my wife, she's like what? Yup, kick the pool boy out!

My best friend goes up to help her. He was going to drive his 4 runner.. I tell him no.no, tall. Gotta be able to sit ass first, then turn, for a little but anyway.

Finally got home at about 1030...

It's nice to back in my own bed.

Great staff, but the beds suck!

We may be out your way sometime within the next two years. Daughter and Son in Law are out there. He's stationed at Wheeler I believe playing with drones. Would be a great time to go visit during the winter here in Ohio.

I'm in the Civilian town just outside of Wheeler Army Airfield.i can hear the drones fly around at night.

Let me know if you make it. We will have a beer of two at the Pub just off the base.

Here is an update:

After the Lumbar Fusion at L4-L5 on November 8 2017, after much Physical Therapy I was finally cleared to get back on the bike in late July 2018.

The day the doc cleared me I went to the dealership, and told them that I was cleared to ride. They asked when I wanted to pick her up and they said they would take her down stairs and get her ready... I said Saturday... so July 28 2018 I was finally able to get to the my ass back in the saddle... almost 4 years after the initial accident that took me off the bike to begin with.

A good cigar, a couple of laps around the parking lot, a short ride up the street and back and I was ready to go home... boy did this feel good!

My friend Larry chose to accompany on the ride home....

My neck was the next issue that needed to be addressed... C3-C4-C5 (or was it C2-C3-C4?) anyway.. whichever 2 they were were next.. fortunately the cervical fusion isn't anywhere near as invasive as the lumbar fusion was... 30 days off the bike... September 13, 2018...

Doc surgery went well again, (Same neurosurgeon) very happy with his work.... (I wonder if he gives frequent flier miles?)

Then... the curve ball hits... 2 weeks after surgery I'm home.. not feeling well. the next day I realize I cant bear any weight on my legs.
Entirely unrelated to the surgery, I'm having cardiac arrhythmia... EMS shows up... they hook me up to the EKG in the ambulance and ask me if I knew what V-tach is.... I understand its an irregular heartbeat... how do you fix it... ???

They subsequently tell my they might have to shock me back into a normal sinus rhythm. The first thing out of my mouth is waitaminit... there are alternatives to this, right? medication? The thought of being shocked while conscious is a little freaky...

The local hospital is 3 blocks away. They say transport, let them work on me there... and in my head I'm thinking... they don't have a cardiac unit there... WTF?

Sure enough... they "stabilize" me... all I heard was this might sting a little ( a little my freaking A=ZZ) and "charge to 100" the next thing I know I felt all my organs jumping around in my chest cavity. OK.. they get me stable.. then they transport me AGAIN (a SECOND CHARGE BTW) to the hospital with a cardiac unit which was a 15 minute ride away.

I swear if I ever get a chance to hit someone with those paddles I don't like I will! That chit hurts for a damn week!

1 stent installed, I spent three more days there because I was in complete renal failure not realizing I had no blood flow to my lower extremities (why I couldn't walk) so they waited to see if my kidneys would recover. Blood work every four hours. I was a damn human pin cushion!

3 days later they send me home all good.

A week later I follow up with the cardiologist.. he asks how I'm doing... I say going crazy, staying home... He asks why I'm home... I said that was the discharge orders.... he says no.. now you can resume your normal work routine.... grrrr...

After a couple of medication adjustments, me PB is stupid low... 100/70 on a high day.. 80/50 on a low day... get me stuck in traffic for an hour you might get me up to 120/80

Now, PT twice a week for the neck, a Bone Growth Stimulator to assist the fusion... (co-pay is almost $900) I wear it daily 4 hours a day, for 270 days

the last repair is supposedly for my left shoulder... which I cant do without my cardiologist clearance.... he wants to do a heart MRI in March...

This has been a great learning experience.

That's been the last 2 years in 2 minutes of reading.
