Would appreciate your opinion
« on: June 04, 2015, 09:09:15 AM »

I have tried probably all the ideas to rectify the mess and most work well but........

I am tried of trying to keep the oil filter change oil from making a mess of the wires under the filter and have come up with an idea.

I am just about finished with a proto type and I want your opinion on it.

I am making a shallow cover you can screw on to the filter housing so you can wash the area before putting a new filter on.

Now what do you guys think, is this something you wish someone would make and would use or buy one and how much would you pay for a device like this.

Its purpose would be to keep cleaning fluid from getting into the filter housing while washing the area below the filter.

oh by the way for some reason there is no lip on the housing.

I will post a picture of what I have made soon.

Ok what I did was cut the filter and took a 2 inch pipe cap and filed the edge of the cap to snuggly fit the cut filter.

Sounds interesting.  Would like to see a few pics and description of what type of material used to make it.

If you are going to wash it down (which I have done sometimes in the past too), could you not just screw the new filter into place after removing the old and then wash it down.  Possibly I am missing something but this seems to be adding a step.

Yes you are right but for me the filter gets in the road. It might seem a little anal but maybe it's just me. Thanx for your comment.

Over the years have had different cyles (pardon the pun) of anal retentiveness on this issue.  Have cut, devised, rigged, re-engineered and futztuperkated more options than I ever should have wasted time on.  None ever were truly and all still inevitably some amount of mess behind.  Finally realized it was just easier not to worry with it.  Change it with a rag stuff beneath.  Remove the rag.  Wipe things down.  Hit the area with a heavy dose of aerosol break cleaner.  Wipe it all down again quickly.

Forgot to write above that I'd still love to see your idea.  I never assume my latest and greatest ideas are the end-all-and-be-all.  If you've got a cool idea I'll be your guinea pig too.  Lay it out there my friend!

It looks both cost effective and practical!  I think you're on to something...

Everyone is going to say "Now why didn't I think of that"!   :2vrolijk_21:

I'll chime in here as a rookie at servicing my Harley.  I've been a mechanic all my life and done way more wrench spinning than I care to remember.  I've had my later Harleys all serviced at my dealership and they've treated me right, so I've been oblivious to the issues of the oil draining from a removed oil filter.... until a couple weeks ago.

I had my '09 SERG up on my table lift doing my 30t front trans sprocket upgrade and while at it decided to go to the new Liqui-Moly synthetic oil.  While at it did the Redline trans and primary oil change.

So I have a new filter and I also have my left running board off because of the primary etc.  I literally just cut a then piece of cardboard and slid it up under the filter and spun the filter off.  I got zero oil drips, the cardboard just slid up under the filter adapter and that was it.

I'm thinking that I was lucky doing this because of the running board being off.  But the thin cardboard was just perfect and I just had my drain pan on the lift table and no drips.

I was really dreading this oil change because I'd heard all the horror stories about the oil mess and all.

So was I just lucky because of the running board removal?

For just two bolts to take off the running board and a thin piece of soda can 12-pack cardboard, I'm saying I'm good to go.

A doggie pee pee pad works too.  Slide it under the filter.  I'd like to see a pic of your idea though.

I agree with chaos901, I just crew the new filter on and I use carb cleaner in that area before I wash it.

I do the cardboard trick using the box that the new filter comes in. I custom cut to the right length and have no problems leaving the floorboards in place.

I work a Wal-Mart plastic bag under the old filter & up against the housing by see-sawing it back & forth then remove the old filter, bag and all.  Haven't had a spill yet.  Would like to see a photo of a temporary housing cover that protects the filter mount area while being washed.

Bub,

Thanks for posting the pic above.  That's a great idea and makes for a really heavy duty cover for the filter housing/adapter.
