Fatboy Frame
« on: July 20, 2010, 12:12:19 AM »

I started my fatboy build back in January, I want to start showing it as well as ride. Doing a Stage 4 SE kit on engine. The heads and cylinders have been powder coated and diamond cut. Custom flames added to paint, all new chrome front end, custom PM wheels and swing arm has been chromed. My question is should I chrome or powder coat the frame to match paint. I'm thinking chrome but sometimes you can over do it. Your thoughts please.

Powdercoat, color matched to your paint scheme...... :2vrolijk_21: Chrome on the HD frames really does not look that great as it really makes all the crappy welds stand out

Ditto. :2vrolijk_21: As much as I love chrome you need to have balance, also having (some) painted parts accents the chrome parts and makes them stand out more.

I love chrome, but I would worry about the durability of it plus powder coated would look better and be easier to keep clean.

I say CHROME you will have to do alot of work on the welds to clean them up. As long as you have enough color to offset the chrome. You didn't say what color the engine is now, but if it is colored maybe the trees and Headlight bucket painted to match I think it would look cool. Love chrome framed bikes as long as there is enough color offset to balance the overall looks.

Yeah, 'er 'uh, NVTHIS,

IMO, chrome is always the best choice.  OTIS has a Fat-Boy in his Garage with a chrome frame.  I didn't see any chips or flaking, anywhere.  Ask him about it.  I think it was done at Brown's Plating, and was triple-plated.  Chit flying up off the road, at least in the Mountains of WV, will do more damage to powder-coat than chrome, everytime.  There endeth the lesson.  ;) Later--HUBBARD

I sent the heads and cylinders to Ultra Coat and then to Diamond Cut. Cost for powder coat was about 480.00 and Diamond Show Cut 550.00.
