Lower Fairing Magnetic Glove Box Doors
« on: September 03, 2011, 05:17:57 PM »

Has anyone tried these things?  I don't even use my lower glove boxes because the snaps are such a pain in the butt...I hate them.  I've looked at the different rigid locking doors, but I really could care less if those particular things lock, and fiddling with a key would be more trouble than it's worth, to me.

This seems like it would be a good compromise.  http://www.harley-davidson.com/gma/gma_product.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524448777397&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374309435964&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374309435964&locale=en_US&bmUID=1315084291231&bmLocale=en_US

I have the ones with pocket on them. The pockets are MUCH easier to use when riding.

I might try them too if we get some good feedback about them. I hate the snaps also.

I played with some at the Dealer, but didn't pick 'em up yet.  I liked the looks and way they work.  Got a stong magnet holding 'em.  But, my only reservation will be how well they stay secure with the pocket full of stuff ... like sun screen, tire repair kit, snacks, gloves, extra glasses, etc., etc, etc.???  Chrome cash deal.  Good idea!  ;) har. spyder

I'm sure a creative rider (NOT ME) could probably buy some magnets and convert the stock ones.

Well, probably, but they've got that cool hinge that would be hard to replicate.  Pretty neat all-in-all.  ;) spyder

I saw those in the new catalog and got them on my list to get. Not sure if it will be before MV or not before I get them. I think it is a great idea and worth a try. :nixweiss:

Since you've actually put your hands on them and say they seem good, I'll be the guinea pig on these.  I've got a $50 gift card at the local dealer, and it's burning a hole in my pocket.  ;)

I was thinking that I could stuff my Exigent rain cover in there, an extra pair of gloves, headache meds, etc.  I think as long as nothing was putting outward pressure on the doors, they'd be fine.  They're useless to me with the snaps...too much a PITA.

Called...have to order them, so I'll go by tomorrow and get 'em ordered.  Hopefully have them on by next weekend and can give a report.

I was trying to find something for around 50 bucks...these are $49.95, so that's pretty close.  Was looking at various chrome trinkets for the engine, but really, I kind of like the contrast between the Granite powder coat on the motor and the chrome...don't feel the need to cover it up like I did the Silver motor on the '06.   :nixweiss:

Go for it Terry.
What's 50 bucks on a $40K investment?
And with those, you and I can take off to use on the next bike.

fiddling with a key would be more trouble than it's worth, to me.

I wanted, and have, the non-locking glove box doors for exactly that reason.  Got them from e-glide goodies http://eglidegoodies.com/id133.html.  They're easy to open even with gloves, but they're spendy--$200 for the pair.  Those magnetic ones look like a pretty good deal, especially when it eases that burning feeling in the pocket area.

Let me just say $200.00? For those? Really? WTF... They look OK and I hate the snaps myself but $200. :nixweiss:

That seems to be the going rate for 'em.  HD version is almost as much  http://www.harley-davidson.com/gma/gma_product.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524448772559&default=none

Somebody on this site developed a set too, but I can't find the thread.  Perhaps dOOd will come to the rescue.

Found the thread about pj57 and his locking GBDs, but still no sign of non-locking type:

Yeah, it's steep, but that's what I've said about many of our accessories...like a $400 license plate bracket...luckily, this isn't a totalitarian country yet, so we all get to decide what we want to spend our money on.

I didn't mean to imply that I wouldn't spend that much money on them or that you shouldn't either, because I would. It just struck me as being a little high priced for what it was. IMO a lot of the stuff we buy for our CVO's should already be standard equipment anyway. It's all a matter of choice.

Are the hinges made of gold?!!!  :o Sorry, $200.00 for a set of glove box doors is freaking insane.

Are the magnets strong enough to keep from opening if anything inside glove box bounces around? Oh yeah, get to use this! ;D

That's my only concern with them, JR.  I like the looks, the price is not outrageous (for HD), and the design looks good....but, I stuff all kinds of small items in there (like eyeglasses) that I wouldn't want to lose and so was concerned with something getting against it and pushing open while riding.  Probably strong enough to keep from happening, but, not out of the question.   :-\  spyder

I have them on my 2012 and so far I really like them. I keep microfiber towels in them, wet ones on one side and dry ones on the other and it's a snap to get one out while riding now.

That's cool  :coolblue: ;D But do you think they would stay closed if you fill them up with heavier things like tire gauge, glasses, and other misc thingies? :nixweiss:

JR...I don't have them in hand, so this is a guess...but, I'd think that as long as nothing heavy was near the top of the box, it would be fine.  I found a video!!

Yea, me too...if necessary, I think you could add a couple of those stick on flexible strip magnets, cut to size, in strategic locations, but it looks fine as is for what I plan on putting in there.

OK not bad. I think the price is reasonable enough to give them a try.

That was a sort of a snap decision. :huepfenlol2:

Yea, me too...if necessary, I think you could add a couple of those stick on flexible strip magnets, cut to size, in strategic locations, but it looks fine as is for what I plan on putting in there.
Yep, good idea.  Not where I'm gonna be carrying a gun, but might be a handy stash for a point & shoot camera or your phone so as to not get drenched.   :vrolijk_15: I tend to over pack those lowers.  ;) spyder

Me either.  I tend to not even use the boxes because I don't trust the snaps to secure it.  Get 'em tight enough to snap well and they are a PITA to get closed again once opened.  Lost one of the doors once...the keeper had come untied, the door unsnapped itself (nothing in there) and I just felt it hit my leg on it's way to the road.  No chance to recover it.  The liners they put in the new bikes take up a lot of space.  Hell, the liners take up a lot of space in the bags as well...I take 'em out of the bags for trips and gain what seems like 1/2" in all directions, and the luggage bags slide in and out easier.  The boxes will be nice for keeping cleaner, microfiber cloths, tire repair kit, small LED flashlight, pressure gauge, etc.

JR...I don't have them in hand, so this is a guess...but, I'd think that as long as nothing heavy was near the top of the box, it would be fine.  I found a video!!

Thanks Terry! I still think they we would be worth a try for me! :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21:

Don't use the liners anywhere either.  luggage bag on one side sometimes.  What kind of cleaner do you carry in the lowers?  :nixweiss: spyder

When I bought the '06, they gave me some of the small HD "travel" sized products...small spray bottles.  I've saved them, so I dumped out the Harley chit and put the product of my choice in with a label so I won't forget what it is.  It's generally more than plenty to get me through a trip, just "touching up" things a bit here and there.  I was using Glare Sahara in it, but was never really happy with that product for a quick detail...kind of messy.  I recently found the Griot's Garage Speed Shine...it is by far the easiest to use product of it's kind that I've found thus far.  Lifts the dust/dirt that gets on the bike during normal riding right off with no worry about leaving swirl marks or light scratches.  Probably wouldn't use it on a seriously dirty bike, but for normal stuff it's great chit...along with their blue microfiber cloths.  It's kind of like it has a lubricant in it that lifts the dirt/dust, and it leaves a nice deep shine without messing with the Glare polish on the bike.  Griot's is my new place for The Anal Retentive Detailer... :huepfenlol2:  I still like the Glare for polish though...nothing's better.

Being at home is costing me a lot of money. Today I bought some more glare stuff with the 15% off labor day sale. Even thought I would try the GLARE Sahara Wash and Detail Spray. Say's "This is a beautiful after care product when your vehicle gets very dirty and you want to clean and maintain the original deep beyond wet look shine you received using the Glare Professional Polish." Then I went to Groits gGarage and bought the 3" Random Orbital and some pads. Wish I read this first, I saw the speed shine and already ordered the glare sahara so I didn't get it...oh well. :nixweiss:

JR...the Sahara works fine, I just found the Speed Shine easier to use.  Just spray the Sahara on the cloth, then wipe, then use another cloth to finish.  The mist tends to get on stuff you don't intend if you spray the surface...overspray.  You're going to wonder how you ever lived without the 3" Orbital from Griot's...that thing is the ticket!  Get well, bro...

Dang it Terry, you were gonna alert me next time Griots had a sale, and here I missed out again on the sale yesterday.  No 3' ORBITAL for me.  Still polishing by hand in Goldsboro.  :(  spyder

In my defense, I didn't get any notification from Griot's about a sale.   ;)  JR, did you get the orbital on sale, or just the free shipping?  This thread has been thoroughly jacked... :huepfenlol2: :jack:

Terry, the 15% off sale was with Glare products. Griot's Orbital was free shipping> :2vrolijk_21:
