Wheels 21" Front and 200mm rear on the SESG
« on: November 12, 2009, 08:53:30 PM »

Has anyone tried modified wheels on the SESG I am interested in putting Chrome 21 on the Front and going to the 200mm rear.

I contacted Hogpro and they said they have installed 200mm rear on 2009 SG on 17 x 6.5 rims, Had not installed a 21" on an SESG yet not sure of fit?

Then contacted Indy HD as they install 21" on the new bikes in their showroom. They said they could do it and also using an 18" 200mm on the rear but offered no guidance as to fitament.

Found a smokin deal on some RC Components wheels on Craigslist but hesitant to buy unless I know they'll work on the SESG?

I recently bought a 2010 tequila sunrise sesg. I bought a set of PM Riviera wheels, 21" front and 200 rear. Rear fit fine but the 21" front did not fit inside the fender. Had to go with the klock werks wrap around.

OK I stopped today at Carmel, In Harley Davidson I knew from a previous stop that they frequently install PM and RC Components 21" front and oversize rear wheels on the new bikes in their showroom.

Upon arrival I saw 2 bikes set up just as described. I had a brief conversation with the parts staff and this is what I was told:

They take off the factory fender and then drill out the rear mounting hole one size larger 3/8" then mount the 21" front reinstall the modified fender lifting the rear of the fender while tightening.

They are using Metzeler 880 tires as well. Seems I have read they expand less when hot than the Avon's?

He told me the 200 mm would fit on a 18 x 6" rim without modification. They offered to install the entire package for around 3700.00

Not sure about the price but the fact that they are confident enough to perform the work and warranty IMO said something about the quality of the information.

Still not 100% confident but heading in that direction

when they tried to mount my 21" front they said they did drill it out but i do not know what size they drilled it to. they mounted the fender after they drilled it and when they tried to mount the wheel they couldn't even get the axle in. hope the people u r dealing with know more than i have been told.
sorry i don't have any pictures.

Many people particularly the younger crowd seem to love the contrast Agitator wheels. Unfortunately
I a not among them :-(

Still old school and Going All Chrome is my preference!

That said on my last two bikes I went with Harley Davidson Wheels. Most recently Roadwinders while they were beautiful the day I installed them after 45 days the rear wheel started peeling chrome.

The reply from Harley was that since I installed them and not a dealer they were not covered?????

WTF over?  So Chrome peels from the Hub because it knows who installed it! Not because it was a manufacturing issue? Funny how there are links all over the web of people having this problem with Harley brad wheels. Guess they were all owner installation errors? Hmmm anyway lost all future wheel business from me and anyone willing to listen!

RC Components backs their wheels with a 7 year exchange replacement warranty. Now there is a company that understands that when your happy you tell a few people. However when you get screwed you tell everyone who will listen!!!!!

Well, I'm definitely not in the younger crowd and I've always liked the look of the contrast wheels.  That's one of the things that drew me to the SESG.  I think they look really  good on the spiced rum.  I saw the chrome agitators on a spiced rum recently and didn't care for the look at all.

See thats Why there are so many accesories out there! I liked the wheels on the 2009 SERG. Cannot say the Chrome Agitators do it for me either but then the are made by Harley so I wouldnt buy them anyway!

I knew from the first time I saw them in Sturgis that if I bought it I would have to change the wheels. The painted cowbells will need to go as well! All in due time

Here are the anticipated wheels of choice.

But I don't think that's for the "SLAMMED" front fender on the SERGs or SESGs. I believe that you have to go with an aftermarket fender for a 21"...

Put me in the crowd that digs the stock Agitator wheels in contrast. I think they fit the Spiced Rum color perfectly but it really boils down to personal preference. I am gonna keep the stock wheels but change out the tires to Metzeler ME-880's with a 200/50-18 on the rear. Metzeler's fitment guide shows no issues on the stock rim, which I believe is 5.5" wide (might be 6.0?). Either way ... 200/50-18 fits on both widths.

As far as RC Components go, I have a set of Venoms on my "other" CVO (ooops! ;) ) bike and so far they look and perform great! No problems with the chrome (about 3000 miles on them). Pic is attached, it was taken after some other mods I did and was before I had detailed it. When it is detailed ... the thing is blinding  :bananarock:

But I don't think that's for the "SLAMMED" front fender on the SERGs or SESGs. I believe that you have to go with an aftermarket fender for a 21"...

I know Harleys ad says "slammed fender" I think that's the dscription of their ad staff.
I've measured the SESG and the 09/10 stock FLHX and the fenders are the same.

I am sure that the fender on the ’09 SERG is “slammed”. I don’t know about the ’10 SESG, off hand.

With the 18 on the 2010, the fender comes into the rim more, therefor looks slammed..........

Just went out to the garage and looked at my wife's 09 SG and my 10 SESG.  There's a definate difference that's visable by eye.

I measured from the center of the front edge of the fender to the tire.  The wife's 09 SG is 2 1/4".  My 10 SESG is 1 1/2".....a difference of 3/4". :nixweiss:

I'd like to merge this comment with JC's below:

I measured from the center of the front edge of the fender to the tire.  The wife's 09 SG is 2 1/4".  My 10 SESG is 1 1/2".....a difference of 3/4". :nixweiss:

Here is what I show:

Stock 2009 Street Glide Tire (front):  130/80B17 65H = Rotational Diameter of 25.18"
Stock 2010 Street Glide Tire (front):  130/70B18 63H = Rotational Diameter of 25.16"

Feel free to check my math, but if there is 3/4" difference in fender clearence (per JC's post above) then I don't see how a 21" will fit on the stock setup without some mods to the front fender. I <casually> checked some some sizes of front tires available for the SESG and there doesn't seem to be a "low profile" tire available that will allow a final rotational diameter within .50" of the stock rotational size. That being said, I'm not sure about the method of enlarging the holes in the fender would allaow for the fitment of a 21" front (with available tires).

Again ... check my math but I'm smelling a different fender for a 21" front wheel. The only variable would be the mould of the front fender on the 2010 SESG. Meaning ... it could have the same internal clearance as the 2009 SG, but has been formed such that the very front portion of the fender is shaped so as to appear more "slammed".

Dunno ... just offering stuff up for consideration.

Went through the catalogs at the dealer today and the unpainted replacement fender for the SESG is a different part number than the 2010 and earlier SG fenders. So they are definitely different looks like a color matched standard Tequila Fender will need to be ordered to add the 21"

You might could try the Fat Boy fender adaptor kit, P&A Part Number 59013-02A. Looks like it would move a stock fender up about 1". If that works (and it looks like it would) you may not even have to do the "drill the rear mount hole bigger" method.

Might be a worth-while investment (or experiment) for the $70 price of the kit above (at MSRP - 20%).
I'm just completely bummed that the stock Agitator rear rim is only 5.0" wide - so long 200mm rear on the stock rim   :drink:

Might be a god option I was surprised that no one had this type of product. Apparently someone does. Would be a cheaper investment than a replacement fender. I'll probably order one to see if it fits? this would eliminate the clearance problem.

Definitely wont fit the stock rim and after being underneath to work on the plate frame clearance for the larger rim 200mm is in question as well?  :nixweiss:

Not giving up yet but not charging ahead either until confident it will fit without issues!  ;)

 :cherry:

Obviously to me,  the quest for most of this dialogue is "looks".   Keep in mind,  going with the 21 inch front end (I had one on my Wide Glide) a few yrs ago......plus an extra wide rear tire to boot.  You're comprimising handling and comfort.

So,  as long as you understand that and accept that fact,  go for it.  You will have an attractivek "bar hopper" for sure.   But to go that way with a (Tour model),  will (take away) from what a Tour model is all about.......getting down the road loaded with stuff and being comfortable doing it. :-\

I've got a streetrod with 2" dropped spindles on the  front end,  I can tell ya it looks good,  but be careful turning into an upgrade driveway or ramp as you'll make tire to fender contact and rip off the "snap" holding your "bra" in place.  A buddy also has a new 2010 Road Glide with the (one inch lowered) rear shocks..........does it look cool???

Yes it does.......does he bitch about how it rides compared to his older Road King.........YES he does.  and stock Tour model rear shocks will solve that problem.

So,  as long as you understand the "compromise" of making these changes..................go for it. :P

Legitimate concerns  :nervous:

I've ridden an 08 SG with the 21 up front and the 180 kit out back. Lowered the front 2" to regain stock angle and it if it handled any differently than before the wheel mods I couldn't tell.  :2vrolijk_21:

Hoping this turns out the same but if not it'll go back to stock size chrome rims. Not a big Agitator rim fan contrast or otherwise. :nervous:

Fender clearance issue solved with new brackets from Hogpro

Bagger Fender Bracket for 140/70-21 Tire

For those of you that want to put a Metzler 140/70-21 front tire on your Bagger with your stock fender. These chrome billet brackets raise your stock Bagger fender so that the fender clears the 140/70-21 tire. The benefit of the 140/70-21 tire is that it handles better than the 120/70-21 and it has a much higher load rating. The 140/20-21 will raise your front end close to 2" so this is not for everyone. Customers are responsible for their fender to triple trees/crash bar clearances.

Price- $99.95 for the brackets with hardware

Covington makes an adapter to make the stock fender work.  It is like a reverse version sp it is hardly noticeable he made the prototype for my bike so I know he makes one

I think that dependent on what type of roads / riding you do it's not going to be too much of an issue and the monotubes will certainly help.

After researching these further with Hogpro these brackets will not work for the CVO Street Glide fenders

The CVO SESG fenders are 3/4 of an inch shorter in the radius than the stock Street Glide fender.

You may want to get your ABS re-calibrated.  According to the manual, if you change the size of the tires/wheels to different than OEM, it can throw the ABS calibration off and the ABS may not function properly if applied.

Worked fine today, but will keep it in mind I've read similar statements.

The abs signal comes from the bearings and they are a constant size, thus the tire/wheel size in theory should not have an effect.

I also read that the ABS had to be recalibrated if you bled the brakes, this also has not been the case in my experience.

Ok the discovery continues recieved the brackets from Covington Customs for the "CVO Street Glide" These will not wrok either.

The CVO Fender radius is 3/4 inch shorter and theses brackets raise it 3/4" so they will raise it to the stock fender height.

The Dunlop 130/70B18 rotational diameter is 25.32"

So if the rear fender hole is drilled to 3/8" and these brackets are used a 120/70/21 should be able to be installed with these.

As usual I wish to be difficult and want to use the wider (and 1.1" taller) 140/70/21 rotational diameter 29.09". Rotational diameter difference is 1.885"

The 1.885 plus the fender difference of .75 equals 2.635 total difference.

I am now seeking a bracket to allow clearance and probably will have to make one.

Will call Covington next week (They contacted me today saying they do not offer a solution  :nixweiss:) and maybe drive over to Bad Dad in Ft Wayne to see if they can assist.

May or may not work, have you seen the 21" wheel adapter for front fender from Battistini's - not sure if it's the look you want.  Have seen one and they look cool.   :nixweiss:

Still incomplete, The pictures are with the fender sitting on the tire. I still have to have brackets fabricated to mount it.

The brackets need to be 2.125" tall center to center and 3" wide center to center. This will allow just over .25" clearance at the tightest point.

Noone offer such a bracket if it was a standard fender instead of the slammed SESG it would still need to be 1.35" these are not available either.

As the 140 tire increases in popularity I am sure someone will start to produce them.

Man was the weatherman off today! Schedule my bike into a shop to fabricate the custom fender brackets for the new tire and stock fender. should have her back by the weekend?

Dabb, Maybe we can hook up after?

Attached the fender in the proper height with stainless steel muffler clamps shrouded in clear tubing. Not the prettiest but effective. Put a few hundred miles on the new weheel / tire combo  :orange: Performed flawlessly  :2vrolijk_21:

Forget all the crap the "My buddy did that" guy's tell you it handles great and the new 140 tire is as smooth as the stock 130 if not better! :coolblue: :coolblue: :coolblue:

Wheels,
That looks great!!  I noticed that the fender is up, what appears to be, about 2 inches.  Is that going to cause any potential for the fork cap to come in contact with the fender if you bottom out the forks?

Thanks; it is up almost 2" but there is no issue with the triple tree clearances.
I do have Progressive monotubes installed so do not experience brake dive (or rise) like the factory suspensions do.

The tire diamater of the 140/70 21 is approx the same as the 23" with a 120 tire. There arent brackets avail especially for the CVO as the slammed fender is an additional .75" shorter than a stock Street Glide Fender.

So the choice is a custom adapter or an aftermarket fender for a 23". My adapters should be ready by the weekend.
