Mounting GXM 40 Antenna on Convertible
« on: September 27, 2011, 04:44:00 PM »

It looks like the new windshield and deflector parts from the 2012 are starting to trickle in so I will get my parts list together to add to my 2011 convertible.  I would really like to have XM capability and get the Zumo 665 instead of the 660 but do not know about mounting the antenna.  I am not sure if there is enough room in the fairing and according to the Zumo manual the antenna needs to be at least 10 cm and ideally 30 cm away from the main unit.  A Techmount would probably work attached to the handlebars but with the main unit in the center of the windshield, the antenna would need to be on the outside of the handlebars to meet the distance criteria and would look pretty funky.  That's probably why the 2012's come with a Zumo 660 instead of a 665 or 665 option.  Anybody have any thoughts on this?

Why does the antenna need to be so far from the main unit?  I would think as long as there is a clear view of the satellites you'd be OK.  Maybe there is some induced coupling if the antenna is too close. Maybe a call to Garmin would help.

When I searched the forum about the Zumo 665 there was a post with a question about the distance so I looked up the manual on line and the 10 and 30 cm were in there.
