The HK head unit has its own diagnostic capabilities also. The most common diagnostic procedure is to turn the ignition "off," then push and hold any two soft keys simultaneously (e.g. 1 and 3), and turn the ignition swith to "on." The display will show a diagnostic screen that allows you to check switches and other features. If there is a problem, it sill show a code, e.g. B2008 which refers to a specific cause of a malfunction identified in the EDM. The display may also show you the specific wire involved if it's a short, for example.
Also, the HD Electrical Diagnostic Manual has diagnostic protocols for specific malfunctions of the HK unit. For example, I didn't think my AVC feature was functioning. That's symptom 15 in the 2009 HD EDM and the diagnostic protocol starts with the radio "on," tuned to an FM station. From there, soft keys 1 and 3 and "OK" are pressed simultaneously. A diagnostic display appears from which the diagnostic protocol proceeds. In my case, the "Speed Type" should have displayed J1850, but it didn't. The protocol said to press soft key 4 and use the Change button to scroll to the correct speed type, which I did. Then there are a couple of more steps to complete the diagnostic process which I won't repeat here.
If you are having problem with your HK head unit, consult the EDM to help pinpoint the problem. In my case, the SPEED TYPE was set incorrectly and I was able to correct it; AVC now functions properly.
