New 110B crate engine?
« on: January 30, 2013, 09:17:02 AM »

Hi everyone
Just wondering if anyone has purchased a new 110B from HD and the inherent PROBLEMS of the 1st generation have been solved,as I am the proud new owner of a 07 fxstsse, virtually new,695 miles and no enhancements done! (laugh here_ _ _)
I would like to give accolades to this site and the knowledgeable people on it, fantastic,I have gone back page by page through the posts year by year  on 110 problems and Wow it is like looking through a window into history where all the fragments can be put together  big picture.becomes clear. My point being is with issues from top to bottom on the early 110, am I better off just replacing this engine ,not if, but when problems start?

Thanks Don

Other than the oil leak recall, I'm not sure they were that bad.
They do run hot in stock form and you would be well served to stage 1 upgrade (full exhaust, high flow air cleaner, tuner and dynotune).  This is basics to get the temps down.
Other issues common to the 110 and others is the compensator (upgrade to latest SE version) and lifters that don't last much past 20K miles.  These can probably wait a little considering your mileage.

Why spend $5500 on a new engine before you know if there is anything wrong with the one you have?  And if you do have one of the common problems (ACR's inop, oil leaks), fixing those will be a whole lot cheaper than buying a new crate engine and installing it.  Even if you wind up with one of the really bad cranks, it would probably still be cheaper to have the crank fixed properly by Darkhorse or one of the other crank specialists.  After all, the new crate engine will still have a standard Harley pressed crank that is prone to excessive runout.

Definitely get the bike tuned properly to reduce the excessive head temps, consider replacing the cheap crap stock compensator now, versus waiting for it to cause other problems, and then ride the bike.

X2...you read about problems people have, but there were some who didn't have any problems.  If the oil leak problems show up, it'll be before the 10K mark, in all probability.  Like Jerry said, it would be more cost effective in the long run to fix any problems with the motor, and do it right, than to order a HD crate motor.  But you will definitely have problems at some point with the compensator.  I'd wait and see.  But do get it tuned by somebody competent.

At 6 years old and with so few miles, I'd change the brake and clutch fluids and tires assuming the PO didn't. ( Assuming you've changed the other fluids since it's been sitting so long)  Address the engine problems as they crop up.

Thanks for the input, I will treat it right, warm up, and all maybe the sleeves wont move, its a Jan build so a little later in the year.I did start it and change engine oil as i am not able to get out and ride it but as soon as i can heat it up on the road ill do all fluids. I didn't even think of the tires thanks for the heads up, although they haven't been in the elements its too important to overlook
Thanks for all the help,Just seen so many horror stories It may be a toss up which is cheaper and the least aggravating in the long haul, plus I'm real fussy about having it molested in a shop lol.  one thing for sure wont be trading for a metric.

Sorry for the late answer, just stumbled on your thread. Lots of guyz here use the TTS tuner system, the software with it is micro-tunable. Don't know if I have ever seen a bike as old with asfew a miles ;D

dont let it sit and idle - thats exactly how to mess up the cyls and make them leak

start it, put on your brain bucket and drive slow the first mile. never ever let a twin cam sit and idle it will cook. if you get stuck in stop and go with no cross wind - find another way or pull over at a watering hole and wait for the traffic to clear out. you are better off to take side streets with a stop sign every block than ride it in stop and go. the warm up thing was for carb evos - dont do that with a 110.
