2014 CVO Limited intermitant no start
« on: July 28, 2014, 07:50:51 PM »

Ok here's the deal. Let's see who can figure it out......
My 2014 CVO Limited has began a no start issue. When I turn the ign switch on nothing happens. No Power up. Only way I can get power is turn the switch on and move the bike. Either by shaking it on the jiffy stand. Moving the bars. Or lifting it off the stand. If you do not move the bike it will never power up regardless of the time the switch is left on. Sometimes it take a pretty good shake to get it to power up. Once it's powered up it never looses power. I've removed the fuse box cover and tapped on the relays, shook and jiggled wires during the no power. No difference. Only way to get it to power is move the bike.
Calling Dealer tommorow, but just curious to anyone elses opinion. I'm not sure if it has one, but wondered if there is a tilt switch that would kill or disable power incase of dropping the bike. I've been reading the shop manual and can't find anything.

My first guess is a loose connection, I would check first the battery cables at the battery and the starter.  Make sure you check all the grounds as well.  It could also be a connection at the ignition switch.  But I am sure that it's going to be some sort of connection problem.

Just wondering if it has ever just quit while riding?

By wiggling the bike some thing shakes and makes the connection so it starts.
You may try this before you take it to the dealer, turn ignition on and if nothing comes on again move some wires up near the fairing and around the battery area.  Shake them a little, (jiggle test)
May save some time at the dealer if you can show them what you move to,get it to work before they start tearing the bike apart.

Some one may jump in here and have seen or heard of this before.  Some put it into better words than me.

Hope this helps

I've checked battery cables first thing. I've been wiggling wires but haven't located the issue yet. Never died. I just ran the dragon all weekend and never quit, but wouldn't start worth a dam.

I think it's something to do with the security system. I've pulled and tugged wires with the switch on and no power until I move the bike.

Update: took to dealership and it wouldn't do it! Since I Monday it hasn't done it anymore. Which is fine but I'm leaving this saturday for Sturgis and then onto Glacier Mt.  :-\ I sure hope this thing doesn't let me down on the road next two weeks.

There is a sensor that shuts off power to the fuel pump and ignition when the bike is tilted beyond a certain level, called the bank angle sensor.  It's a part of the turn signal & security module (TSSM).  They have been known to fail on occasion.

I asked about that and the dealer said it is all incorporated into the BCM. I know it's not fixed and will more than likely do it while on our trip the next two weeks. As long as it starts I'm good. Being in the truck repair field I understand the dealers stance. If it isn't acting up they don't know what to do to it. I'll just risk it.

Oops, forgot about the HDLAN on the 2014.  Yup, it's all incorporated in the BCM on those.  Sorry for the incorrect info.

May be the battery in the fob is going south. I know it's new but ya never know! I always carry xtra batteries in my tour pak.

Hopefully it will not happen again... but if it does, it would be interesting to see if the "accessory" would power up when you press the button on the top of the left handlebar control. If it does power up, then you know it is not a battery terminal connection - ground issue. If it does not, then it tends to lead towards a bad connection from the battery - positive or ground. Clive

Update: Just returned home from Sturgis Trip. 5500 miles and the dam bike never acted up. I guess something I moved or tightened fixed it.  :nixweiss:
