Yup!  But if you think about it, it's even worse!  First they add the Duty (Import tax) then they add the VAT (sales Tax) so we are taxed on the tax on the postage too!   :(

Gas - petrol as we call it - is the same here.  First they add the Duty, then they add the tax, so again, we pay tax on the tax.

Jim

Had realized that cute little trick Jim.  That seems to be almost universal though.  Some poor schmo in his little store sells something.  It got to him through customs, all fees built in before he puts it in inventory.  He hangs a price tag on it.  And we pay sales tax/VAT/whatever based on the final tab.  There are a lot of taxes on taxes out there if you look for them.  But tax on consigned postage; man....  that was a new one.  You just know that some bureaucrat somewhere got a big bonus for thinking up that one.

It's same in France, we pay taxe on Import taxe +VAT and on the postage.

Perhaps, we don't write that because the US political people had not think that !
It's only in Europe  :-[

Yup.  But I'd bet his identity was kept secret! ;-)

At least if you buy something out of State, you don't pay sales tax - we pay it wherever we buy from!

That's not strictly true Jim - we do get a concession for buying stuff at the Duty Free stores in the airports - as long as we are travelling outside of the EU.

Trouble is I can never find a shop that sells Harley parts  :'(

Nige

P.S. Thats where I normally buy my WHISKY - I also sometimes buy my WHISKEY there.

Hey JJ - with all the stuff I need I reckon I would save around £800.00/$1500.00. This would give me and the good lady a weekend in New York for FREE - if ya get my gist.

I think I might just be looking for an excuse to go see Howie's bike  ::)

Hey Nige, Sounds like a bribe to the "good lady" to me.  ;D  Of course seeing Howie's bike would just be a little something extra that you might as well do since you would be in the neighborhood. right.   ;D ;D good luck with whatever you decide, jj.

Now there's an offer that a guy can't refuse. Guess I need to start looking for the cheap flights  ;D

When do you call spring Howie ? Over here it's just starting to kick in, but the consistent warmer weather will still take about another three or four weeks to get here.

Your offer is of course reciprocated here - any time you fancy a jaunt across the pond there will be a room and a welcome for you.

Nige

What a site this is - spend a little time typing and before you know it someone offers to let you ride their Wide Glide around New York ! Only one word to describe it - awesome !

You could be right their jj. Having said that my good lady loves anything to do with Harley's and especially the road trips they take us on. She's the sort of girl who will sit on the pillion with rain and wind blowing her to bits with me whinging on about the conditions and then say " Hey c'mon Nige we're together and we're on our holidays, what could be better" Guess I'm a lucky guy !

The offer to ride Howie's Wide Glide around New York might be just too much tempation to miss though.

Yahooooooooooooooooooooooooo  ;D

Hey Nige, it'll start getinng nice here by the end of the month usually. By April, it's starting to get nice all the time, but could be a little rainy. I wouldn't worry about that. You're probably used to that! And by May, you don't have to worry. So if you're serious, I'd try to plan end of April, early May so you're assured the weather will be halfway decent!. I'm closer to LGA, but you'll probably have to fly into JFK. Let me know you plans, and I'll srrange some time off. Hoist! 8)

Sounds like a plan coming together Howie.

I'm off to the Bahamas for 17 days at the end of April, returning on the 15th May. This is a Bonefishing holiday with 5 buddies and I have to say that it's as much fun as ridin my scoot. If we manage to get it together it will probably have to be a long weekend at the end of May as we leave on the 13th June for our 17 day trip to the European HOG Rally in Spain (it's a hard life, but someone has to do it).

If we can't squeeze it in there it will have to be July or August - do you have any rallies/events that we could tie up with around that time ?

This is fun, I just love planning vacations  8) 8) 8)

Nige, May 28th is Memorial Day weekend. It's a 3-day weekend for us. The city's pretty deserted. We can use that to our advantage or get out of "Dodge" completetly for the weekend. We don't have plans yet for the hoilday. Would you be coming with your lady or alone? That would kinda determine my plans too! ;) Hoist!

If I told Jan that I was coming to NY without her and then said I was probably also going to ride around the town on a Wide Glide while I was there, you'd probably receive a postcard from her telling you that my testicles were at the top of the Empire State building and did you think they would be able to ride a Wide Glide on their own !  :nervous:

Guess we'll be two up  ;D 8) ;D

Next phase of mods!  I was out today for about 100 miles. This bike runs great!!! I can't imagine how good it will be when I can take it over 3500 RPM. I'll have 500 miles by the weekend and am changing all the fluids. I'm putting the good chit in. M1 V Twin (eng), Redline Shockproof Heavy (trans), and Redline MTL  (primary). I'm putting on the SS Oil Cooler Hoses. I'm ordering Wild 1 Chubby Bars WO515, 10" Apes. I needed new risers, Hyd. Lines, throttle/idle cables and need to extend the wiring. After seeing Mikey's bike in pieces, I decided to let my friends shop handle this. I also had him order the Kury floorboard extensions. He ordered the parts. I should get the fluids, SS Oil cooler lines and FB extensions done this weekend. The bars should be in for the following weekend. With any luck, the bike will be set-up perfectly for me by the trip to York!

I gotta tell you, this bike flies! You don't feel the weight at all. I haven't taken it over 3500 RPM, but you're doing 100 at 3500 in 6th! This bike wants to cruise at 100. The 88" could barely do 100 in stock form! It couldn't get out of its own way. This thing seems as fast as my hot rod '85 FXWG. At 150-200 lbs heavier, that's pretty impressive. It's still not as fast as my Pro Street, but next year with compression, headwork and cams, who knows!!!

More pics next weekend! ;) Hoist! 8)
