Title: 2010 Trip to CO, UT, ID, WY, MT and SD
Post by: 16HD117 on June 17, 2010, 10:04:14 AM
Judy and I are leaving for a two week plus trip out west this afternoon.  Spending tonight with friends in Marietta GA, Friday night in Nashville and will meet Brian (103Thunder) in St. Charles MO Saturday afternoon.

From there we head to Estees Park CO and will make a big loop through CO, UT, ID WY, MT, SD then head home.  Should be home about July 5th.  Trying not to make reservations so that we aren't committed to being at any certain spot each night.

Will try to post info and pics in the afternoons.

Posted this on another thread for a guy wanting driving routes. You may want to try this in reverse if you've never taken this route through SD. The interstate is pretty boring and usually has construction and tourist traffic. Guarantee you will see more of the beautiful parts of the state if you "Get off the Interstate Ben Stone!"

My suggestion is that if you are going to go through South Dakota east to west or west to east that you stay off I-90. The tourist traffic and road construction make for a less than enjoyable experience. If you come through Sioux City, get off on Highway 50 just east of Vermillion. The section from I-29 over to Yankton is nice 4 lane (I grew up in Yankton so I know this). Take Hwy 52 going west out of Yankton by Lewis & Clark Lake. Beautiful bluffs on the Nebraska side. Stop at Gavin's Point Dam if you have time, great vacation location, great camping if you want to spend the night there. There are over 1,400 State and Federal asphalt pad campsites there with firewood, showers and lots of nice amenities. Continue up Hwy 52 until it intersects with Hwy 50 again. Go west through Tabor, Tyndall, Avon, Wagner, Lake Andes and Geddes. None of these towns are over 2K people but there is gas and nice homey restaurants if you get hungry. Stay on Hwy 50 going north out of Geddes until it intersects with Hwy 44. Go West on Hwy 44 through Platte and Winner. The Missouri River Valley west of Platte is gorgeous hilly curvy terrain, well worth the trip! Transition from Hwy 44 to Hwy 18 as you go west of Winner and go into Mission. This is on one of the SD Indian reservation towns and is a unique place to cruise through. No danger, just an opportunity to see something you won't see every day.  That stretch of road from Winner to Mission is new smooth concrete as well so it's a great ride. Turn north on Hwy 83 just west of Mission and go north to White River. Be sure to get fuel in Mission or White River as you're getting out into no mans land here. Pick up Hwy 44 west again and go west and north to Interior. You're now in the Badlands. Outstanding views and great riding. If you have time, go west on Hwy 240 up to Wall. Speed limit in the badlands is 45 and there will be a lot of tourist traffic but the views are some of the best on earth. If you don't have 90 minutes, go east and north on Hwy 240 up to I-90 and blaze on into the Black Hills. A stop at Wall to see Wall Drug is highly recommended if you have never seen it.

This route works going either way. Give yourself time to enjoy the trip. Figure 50-60 MPH average and you should be fine. You'll be out in the open a lot so you can put the coals to it but there are towns to slow down for and views you'll want to stop and take in so it's not a balls out ride.

Being a native South Dakotan, I am quite proud of many of the beautiful sites to see in the state. Too many people speed east and west on I-90 and miss much of the beauty just 40-50 miles south. I have ridden to Sturgis both ways since I got my Wide Glide 3 years ago and it is a great trip! Agree completely with what GStreetGlide says about riding in the Hills. We stay in Hill City to get away from some of the madness that happens in Sturgis. We go there and spend a day looking at the bikes, vendors and other sites but it's a little too crazy for most of us after dark. Don't even recommend riding in the Hills after dark unless you are going up the the lighting ceremony at Rushmore, which is highly recommended!

Hope you have a safe and enjoyable trip! I'll be trying to put together a CVO gathering in the Hills again this year. Last year HD did one but we had already left for home.

If any of you happen to the Denver area, give me call
& I will buy the beer! Jerry 303.324.9342
.....also, If you plan to tour the Coors brewery in
Golden, take a cab!!!!
Law enforcement in Golden will cite you for loud
pipes whether they are or not! ...YOU must prove
the pipes are stock.
Last weekend there was a huge rod & custom car
show there which was so big it shut down downtown...
they cited the president of the sponsoring car club
for loud pipes as well.
Forwarned.....

I hope I don't get distracted by it and go off a cliff!  Between that and the channels being reversed on the 660's MP3 player, I could have some serious equilibrium issues this trip. :P

The roads are great, it's called Peak to Peak hwy, nice ride. Not like Million Dollar Hwy, or Trail Ridge, but a nice ride. Depending on the time of day there's a good BBQ and brewery in Nederland, Wild Mountain Smokehouse and Brewery.  :2vrolijk_21:

If you have time while in Estes get directions for Devils Gulch rd (CO rd 43) to Glennhaven and Drake, not a long ride but great and really twisty. One of my favorite local rides! Taken Nige & Jan, Steve and Bill & Anne over this route.

After visiting Estes Park, continue into the Rocky Mountain National Park  (10 or 15 Bucks)  highest continuous road in north america.  Great ride,  alot of wildlife,  speed limit 20 MPH for the whole road.

brings you out at Grand Lake.   Then work your way to US 50 and take the Black Canyon Ride.   Wonderful.

While in Utah,  I-70 to 15 is a great ride.  Did not have any traffic over Memorial weekend.....

Have fun

Joe

We're in Hays Kansas.  Great 500 plus mile ride today except for the last 100 miles.  100 degrees with a 40 mph wind hitting us from the side!  The beer never tasted better after we got checked into the motel!

Tomorrows ride will be about 400 miles to Mary's Lake Lodge in Estes Park CO.

Views from our cabin at Marys Lake Lodge in Estes Park, Colorado where we're staying the next couple of nights.  Thanks, again, for the tip, Craig!

Sorry I couldn't make it up guys, the new job and getting the land cleared for the cabin hasn't allowed much time for riding! Glad you like the area!

Did you get to the Mangy Moose near Jackson's Hole?

That was pretty freaky running into Jim and Joan in Deadwood!  It was GREAT to see you guys again!  Hope you all have as great a ride as we did!

Bob, Tommy kept us goin' 100 mph (literally, at times!), so there hasn't been a lot of opportunity to post photos.  But I should be home today and Tommy either tomorrow or Saturday and the pics should start flowing then!

Craid, unfortunately, we never made it to the Mangy Moose.  Found a pretty good band at the Million Dollar Cowboy downtown and ended up hanging out down there the first night, then grabbed a late dinner at the Blue Lion (excellent place, BTW!) The second night.  So ... We just need to plan another trip back to hit the Moose! :)

Brian, is the road on west side of Trail Ridge still torn up? We took Steve, Bill and Anne through there las July and the road was a mess, and Bill was towing a trailer. I thought they would have that done by now. we're heading over there in a few weeks on our way to Steamboat and was wondering.

Craig, had to look at it on Mapquest, but yeah, as I remember it, west of the peaks (and before Trail Ridge turns south toward the lakes) was the worst.  Maybe Tommy can confirm when he sess this.  Can't believe they'd still have it torn up like that a year later.  It was pretty nasty in places.

There was a light mist coming down when we went through this stretch, mud, big pot holes and Bill and Anne riding two up trying to miss the holes with a trailer in tow! Well I guess we have no other choice, My brother-in-law is coming out from Florida and wants to ride over Trail Ridge. Last time he came out it was so cold out that we stopped in Estes and had coffee and turned around and rode the lower roads around the foot hills. I'll give him a heads up before we go, thanks again.

Craig....
I was over TRR about the time Brian & Judy were, at one of the half hour stops waiting for the other lane to clear, one of the construction workers brought us bottles of water & told us it would take two more summers to complete
the road work! He said that it could have been done in one summer if they had kept the roads closed....but figured
somebody needed the gate fees. Good luck if you decide to take it! Brian got some great pics considering the concentration it took to get thru the park! I was on the FXR4, so a bike with a wider front tire would be a better
choice.

Sorry it's been so long since I posted anything about the trip but today is the first day that I've felt close to normal since we got back.  This trip was rough on the old man.  Didn't help that I dropped the bike in Wyoming and screwed my shoulder up and about three days from home I came down with a cold that made the last two days on the road miserable!  Finally got to see my doctor today and got meds for the cold an an x-ray of the shoulder.  Should know results from the x-ray later today.

Even with all that this trip was one of the best ever!  Great weather, great sites and good riding partners!

I agree with Brian, The Grand Tetons were awesome!  Second on my list would be Bear Tooth Highway.  Since Brian is doing a great job posting pics, I'll just put a few of mine up.

First few is my BSR.  And may I add a great one!

When we were at the mud volcanoes just up the road, folks there were telling us to be sure and check out the grizzly that had just sauntered down out of the hills.  There was quite a crowd pulled off checking the ol' boy out!  Rangers were directing traffic and keeping a close eye on things by the time we pulled up.  He lifted his head and looked around a couple of times while we were there and one guy let us look through his high-powered lens that he had set up on a tripod.  He was very much alive, just chillin' by the creek bed!!  Pretty awesome sight!

We left Yellowstone and headed for Beartooth Pass.  The road got pretty demanding so I wasn't able to snap any shots along the way, but that was some incredible scenery on that stretch of road!!  I'm hoping Tommy will post some of Judy's pics of all the snow and frozen lakes we rode past.  This photo was taken near the highest altitude point of the highway, right at the Montana/Wyoming state line.  One side of the side says, "Welcome to Wyoming."

Brian, how long a streach is torn up? When we were there last year it started just past that lake on the west slope and went about 15 miles.

Don't know if it's still 15 miles.  If not, it's pretty close to that.  Also, a road that we really enjoyed in that area was Hwy 34 from Estes Park to Loveland.  Great road!

Dis you get a chance to take the back road from 34 at Drake to Glenhaven up to Estes? It's one of my favorites in that area, smaller and more twists than 34, nice views.

I'm amazed we didn't meet on the road at some point!  Our paths sure crossed - we were in Yellowstone 24th and 25th, Grand Tetons & Jackson Hole 24th, over the Beartooth on the 25th, etc...!

We were in Jackson Hole 23rd and 24th.  West Yellowstone 25th and Beartooth 26th.  Were you riding with a group of about six bikes?  One of them an orange 09 CVO Roadglide and another a CVO Ultra?  We saw these guys about half a dozen times from east of Denver to Cody WY.

No, but we saw the same group about 5 or 6 times too!  :D

Just the two of us - rented Ultra Limiteds, Red/Black, Blue/Black, Scottish flags - check out my photos (a lot like yours in the same places!)  :2vrolijk_21: http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=51594.0;all

Checked out your thread.  Great pictures!

We were talking to a guy in Red Lodge who lived near Glacier National park at one time.  GNP is definitely on our list for our next western trip!

Yours were great too!  :2vrolijk_21:

GNP is an absolute MUST.  I've ridden many of the great rides in the World - in the USA, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, All over Europe, and NOTHING compares to that ride up the Going-to-the-Sun Highway.  :)  (Well, in my opinion, of course!)

Sounds good to me, but I can only do one week at a time.  Think next year we may do a Fly & Ride to Germany.

I've ridden out West on my Springer, including the Beartooth, Yellowstone and the Grand Teton NP. Your pictures tell the story of what it means to be free and on a CVO in the midst of this great land. Made my day. Thanks for sharing. It's a great piece of work.
