North Georgia at its best!
« on: November 08, 2005, 03:22:58 PM »

Tom (aka The Beamer Slayer), Brian (103tHunDer) and myself were guest of Johnny, Bill and their two lovely wives this past weekend.  We rode out from Johnnys home in Alpheratta GA thru the mountains of north Georgia and western North Carolina.  The rides were great!  The leaves were at their peak!  The weather was perfect!  The hospitality of our four host was beyond belief!  Here's a few pics that we took along the way.

I am pretending that this is me just looking out over the top of my windshield and I can fall in line behind you folks.  It looks like a good time had by all.  Enjoy!

Thanks so much Tommy for sharing with us.  The weather is so fantastic right now, I hate that I am in the office building web pages and not down riding with you guys watching the leaves jumping from the trees.

Well, as Tommy said, we received nothing but the finest Southern hospitality from John and Bill and their wives this weekend.  If I've said it once, I've said it 20 times over the past few days, but thanks again, John, Sandi, Bill and Elaine for an absolutely wonderful and unforgetable weekend!  You guys are the best!

Following are some highlights of my trip during the past 6 days . . . .

Here are the machines and our host for the weekend, John, at the first gas stop on Friday morning on our way to Highlands, NC for some awesome BBQ:

Right after Tommy and Tom left and just as we had saddled up to head back to John's, in rolled a banana, so we had to do our best to recruit him to the site.  Nice fellow by the name of Paul (but his friends call him "Ape").  Here's that photo I promised you, Ape:

This is a photo along route 143 west in North Carolina on the way to Robbinsville to catch the Cherohala Skyway.  Wow, this place is unreal! :o

This is the narrow, creek, mountain, and tree-lined road heading back into Bald River Falls at the west end of the Syway.  Attendees of the October 2004 CVO Smoky Mountain Gathering will remember these next few views.  This was, of course, on the agenda for this past April, but the weather forced us into a shorter Plan B route that missed the Skyway and Bald River Falls.  Maybe next time? Inside the Tail of the Dragon.  The colors in the Dragon were the best I'd seen all weekend!

Another from the Dragon where I'd pulled over to watch some of the two-wheeled traffic go by for awhile.  Saw a Sheriff patroling, also! :o

Brian, if there was ever any doubt before I'm convinced now.  The 06 Maggie Valley Gathering needs to be a fall event.  That was a great idea.

Glad you guys had such a great time and got to run such beautiful roads.  Congrats on a great few days with good friends gents.

So that's what the area looks like in the sun!

The fall colors do look beautiful.

Fellas Fellas Fellas, great pics but I have to say. Why no mention of the ride. I live 10 miles from Killer Creek and did 400 miles in the N. GA and NC mountains on Saturday. Actually stopped by Maggie Valley and Jonathans Creek to boot. Would have loved to catch up at some point. Ya gotta let folks know and you might have more CVO scooters with ya.

Laker, I actually ran into a Jalepeno at a Hardees in Tellico Plains on Monday.  Went to tell him about the site and he said you'd already filled him in. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]  He was riding with a guy from Tampa on a 100th anniversary Ultra.  Small world, huh?

As far as not mentioning what we were up to, how come you didn't let us know what you were doing?  We only logged a little less than 300 miles on Saturday.  Sounds like we shoulda been riding with you! [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif]

I snapped a few pics of Jonathan Creek with the fall leave backdrop. I will post those once I make it to the office. Wish I could have met up with you guys. Maybe next time.

Bill, my offer from this spring still stands;  You ride as far as here and we ride with you the rest of the way next day. But as gorgeous as the weather is right now and has been for the past two weeks, isn't this kinda rare?  It seems to me that it has been a darn bit chilly this time of year in the past.  Like with snow banks a little North of us and all......

Wow, as WFP just said, this looks really great.  [smiley=thumbsup.gif] We just got our room booked.  [smiley=deal2.gif] 103tHunDer [smiley=cool26.gif], you made quite an impression on the young lady  [smiley=operator.gif] at the reservation desk.  Thank you [smiley=dankk2.gif] so very much for all the hard work you have put into the organization of this event so we ([smiley=stooge_curly.gif], [smiley=stooge_larry.gif], [smiley=stooge_moe.gif]) can all just show up, don our helmets [smiley=helmet.gif],  goggles [smiley=glasses2.gif] and ride [smiley=biker.gif] and have fun.  [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif]  [smiley=dankk2.gif]
Both Mr.WeCVO and I are so looking forward to the riding. Wish we could get an extra day and arrive Wed - we will keep working on it, but otherwise, we expect to see ya all  [smiley=drink.gif] at the Salty Dog [smiley=party.gif] [smiley=party2.gif] [smiley=party3.gif] Thursday evening.
[smiley=bigok.gif]If anyone wants to use our place as a stopover  [smiley=smilie_staub.gif] enroute, we have  [smiley=beer.gif]an extra bed and bath  [smiley=bath.gif]and lots of room in the garage  [smiley=vrolijk_2.gif]for your ride.   [smiley=lost.gif]Mapquest says we are from Maggie Valley a Total Est. Time: 6 hours, 23 minutes Total Est. Distance: 383.67 miles.  We would be taking the direct route ourselves early Thursday morning, I-85S to US460 to I 40W to US 74 W to US 19.    [smiley=vrolijk_30.gif]  [smiley=2thumbsup.gif]

To all that enjoyed our N. GA. area,

I am so happy to hear and see of your enjoyment of our state's offerings.  In addition, I am pleased to enjoy the tax dollars you bring into our state.

Please note, I invite you back as offer as you would like to visit.  We can utilize the tax dollars.

All a side, it appears everyone enjoyed themselves...That's great!!!

John, first let me say:  [smiley=sauer019.gif] [smiley=sauer019.gif] [smiley=sauer019.gif]
I have to drive 700 miles to do stuff like that!

Second, when I pulled into Jonathan Creek Inn on Sunday night, there was a yellow SSR in the parking lot.  I thought, woo-hoo, Buffy's here! :D  But then, in the morning, a gentleman and his wife got in it and it wasn't you. :(

Welcome TBone, a few of us know what you mean about spending a little time here.  Wait till it gets too cold to ride.  Whew!

You have already met some of the fabulous folks who set here a spell.  You will get lots of opportunities to meet a lot more, I am sure.

Enjoy.

Personally I have heated grips and I own heated clothes, that I loath to resort to.  I have fleece to put under/over etc.  My answer is - as long as there is not ice on the road, NO! It never gets too cold to ride.  The cold and the darkeness does tend to increase the hours away from the bike and allows for some friendly computer side chatting and surfing.

I do, however, find that when you get in the 104 and higher temps - it gets too warm to ride.  There is only so many pieces of clothing you can remove and still ride, without getting arrested.

haaa haaa haaa!              ;D ;D

Brian,

It would appear that you took some pics while riding?  If so, was this produced with a hand held digital camera while riding or some other stationary method?

The quality is great whatever the method...

Thanks,

Dick, thanks for the comments.  The photos where you can see the windscreen in the shot (and a couple where you cannot) were taken with the bike moving anywhere between 30 and 45 mph (depending on conditions) with the cruise set.  I used a Canon PowerSot A75 which is a 3.2 mega pixel digital camera.  I continue to be impressed by the quality this relatively low-end unit produces.  Plus, it powers up very quickly and is made to fit your hand, making shots like those possible.

The 4x6 prints I had made of these photos are equally impressive. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Thanks for the information....As I review your details, that makes it even more impressive...That model is rated highly on Consumer Reports...good buy, as you know.

Thanks and be careful taking the pics while riding...dropped one of my cameras while doing so and almost wreaked.  After that, I try not to take 'em while I ride.

Dick

Made killboy.com today.  There are a few at the bottom of page 4 and several more on page 5: http://www.photoreflect.com/scripts/prsm.dll?eventthumbs?event=04RK005P00&start=48&ts=1132083091

Looking good Brian. FYI, I found your pics on page 6 and 7 and 8, not 4 and 5.  [smiley=nixweiss.gif] Gotta love the Dragon. Looks like it was a colorful ride.

You're right, there are some more on those pages, too.  I had turned around to talk to the photographer at that point, though, so they are not "at speed." [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif]

The ones earlier on (where I am on the "outside" lane) were coming down for the first time with floorboards a draggin'. [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif]

Good photos, Brian.  Will you be able to order some from KillBoy?  Never checked on that, but I assume he's selling them.  That one close-up profile shot of the right side is great.  You had the ole girl laying over from the looks of the non-existant ground clearance.  :o Har!  spyder   [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif]

Hey, I thought you had those "up" slashed pipes?

Heard something scraping all the way around that corner.  From the looks of it, it was the stand.

Spyder, yes, I will be ordering some of these, just have to decide which ones.  I'd like one of the poster size jobbies of the one naitram posted to hang in the garage!  They are a little on the expen$ive side, but it might be a once in a lifetime deal, who knows?

WFP, switched out the trusty ol' one-piecs SE slash-ups for the two-piece SE performance muffs shortly before I left.  The jury is still out on the new pipes though.  They are actually more quiet than the (supposedly lower-performance) one-piece jobbies.  Not sure I like that, or the new look for that matter.  Guess I have gotten too used to the slash-up look, or something.

May have to get used to the look yourself.  But here's one vote for the new ones.  Looks good Brian.  That's a great picture.

Brian,

Given the statement that you have ordered your KILLBOY photos, as you know from the web site, be prepared to wait for the results.

However if yours as a good as mine, it's worth it...Not to mention you will be supporting the MC Community.
