Which ways better to achieve compression
« on: February 18, 2012, 04:03:27 PM »

What will work better using the stock head and changing the piston or milling the head and leaving the stock piston?Basically which way makes makes more power using the tw777 woods cam milling and porting the heads or using the stock heads and changing to a high comp. piston?

The answer would depend on the cam choice.

My bike is being modified now, with 10.5 pistons.  I figured it's easier to replace a piston than it is to 'un-mill' a head.

The cam will most likely be a woods TW-777.

Whoever ports the heads will know what to do. The 110 is not the same animal as a bath tub chamber and needs a little different treatment IME.

If I was targeting 10.5/1 I would use pistons

Compression and porting heads are two of many pieces of the puzzle in a performance upgrade.  I found a good read, which helped me to understand how the pieces influenced torque and horsepower.  I was able to read it online without even having to buy the book.  The book is named "How To Build A Harley-Davidson Torque Monster".
Here's the actual link...
http://www.amazon.com/Harley-Davidson-Torque-Monster-Motorbooks-Workshop/dp/0760329117/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top
Click on the picture of the book and it will open in it's entirety.

Good Luck!

I was faced with the same decision after deciding to go with the Woods 555.  Did not want to change the pistion. After talking to Scott at Hillside Cycle I decided to pull the heads and send them to him to be cc'd.  My goal was 10 to 1. Not sure he could have gotten me 10.5 to 1 just by milling the heads. By sending them to Scott I  know the CC was before and after. I also had him install compression releases. If you go with a piston change and achieve 10.5 to 1 you may want to consider releases.

Should be firing mine up for the first time today...
