Title: Close Up Photos of Things
Post by: Twolanerider on August 16, 2005, 02:55:01 AM
Didn't take these photos.  Just liberated them from a currently running eBay advertisement.  They do, however, offer some closer views than have been posted so far of some of the things we've been discussing.  So to further define what we hate and what we don't; here goes.

First pic is that leather tour pak.  It's certainly........ um..... different.

An image of the tank.  Will someone advise for sure if this is an emblem or paint?  It is a detail of the 06 bikes I like though.

Last one to throw up for discussion here is the air cleaner (housing).

On the question about the tank emblem, it is an emblem not paint.

Can't quite figure out the leather dash pad.  Not fuctional, I guess someone decided they needed some leather at the front of the bike too.

One good thing the leather trunk, dash will hold up better than paint and easyer to keep up. that a plus for me i,ve got a charcoal ordered if i can get it at msrp or less -AK

Not 100% sure on the "hold up better" part AK.  I've done the leather pak on the Road King Classic and collected several years and miles on them.  They tend to get scuffed.  Can collect water stains in heavy rains that can be difficult to ever completely eliminate.  And they do have to be treated to keep from drying out.  They wear ok, but I really think from what my experience has been it takes a bit more maintenance to keep them looking good than it does a painted surface.  And while you might buff out a surface nick that's only in the clear coat, if the leather is nicked it's just nicked.

For me Battle scares long term look better on leather than paint .Well worn leather that been taken care of(oiled)  adds  character more so than chiped, faded ,scracher up paint -AK

In our dry climate, I have seen almost every bike with leather, ie: Roadking, Heritage Softails, not hold up very well.  You can put all the dressing you want on the leather, and on the Heritage the bags start to lose shape pretty fast if they are riden much.  The RK with the hard bag holds up better, but the seams start to show from the dry weather, and any knicks expose the untreated leather and then start to get wider.  I would bet that out here, in the southwest, the leather tour pac will require alot of TLC.
I also don't understand why they didn't lower the bike to give it a sleeker look like the SEEG? [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

I wish they hadn't lowered the SEEG - I was expecting an Electra Glide ride, and got a worse ride than my old Dyna.  Perhaps they actually listened to a few of us and our complaints about the ride quality on the SEEG's, and left the Ultra's alone?

Sounds like you need a set of Progressive shocks.....

Haven't made up my mind yet on Progressives - still looking at all the options out there.  According to Mobe, the stock suspension on the new Ultra rides better than his SEEG with the Progressives  http://flhrsei.org/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=egu_gen;action=display;num=1122955062    When you make a shock or fork one inch shorter, you automatically give up travel and get a harsher ride.  No matter how good the damping is in the Progressives versus the original equipment, it still doesn't make up for the lost travel.

I don't necessarily agree. I had an FLHT with the air set-up, stock height, etc, etc.  This SEEG with the progressives rides much better and handles better.  The problem with HD stock air suspension is they sacrifice the quality of the shocks because they think the air system will make up for it.  The problem is when you hit that bag, you are getting virtually no give regardless of what you set the air pressure at. The progressives are designed to quickly dampen the compression and return to original position just as quickly.  The result is less of a sudden stop on the compression, and better road contact.
Had em both, there is no comparison to stock.  JMHO [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]
