Clutch hub female splines worn a little
« on: April 12, 2008, 08:28:15 PM »

I have my clutch hub off and drilled out the rivots on the flywheel ringear to install the Rivera 10-84Tooth ringear/starter pinion that I should have Monday.   I noticed that I have 6 splines on the outside edge of the clutch hub (female splines) that have a about 3/16" of  the splines missing.  The rest of the splines look/feel good when scraping with a small screwdriver.  The trans input shaft splines are good.  This clutch hub where the splines are appear to be a cast part?

Should I buy a new hub with the ringear and bearing (I believe over $200), the 37806-03 hub that contains a new clutch ($379), or put it back together and don't worry about it?   :nixweiss:

I believe for the way I ride it wil be ok..  The bike just turned 25,000 miles.  If none of the dealers have one in stock,  I would have to take it apart again after York.

I believe I read where a fellow had his strip out all together.  Maybe the clutch hubs all look this way after a while.  Any help would be appreciated.

I got towed off of the Interstate when my splines let go.  I'd replace the basket...

From personal experience.....order a new compensator nut when you replace everything. Cheap insurance :2vrolijk_21:  Mine had been off twice when it broke. Thank goodness it was still on the lift when it broke. If I were on the road it would have been disastrous.

Didn't think of that (my bad, sorry).  But my limit on those is to stretch them three times.  After the third tightening it's time to replace.  Fortunately they're cheap.

I thought the inner hub (with splines) was part of the outer clutch basket.  37550-98 is the inner hub ($133.99).  I will have to take to work and press apart tomorrow.  The clutch discs look like new to me.  I hate snaprings.

The compensating nut already comes pre loctited.

Thanks everyone.

That's a big mother too.  Get a good supply of bad words pre-loaded for the two or three times it slips and you pinch your fingers.

I'm more afraid of losing it than about the fingers.   :)  Local dealers don't stock anything but accessories it seems.

It's amazing what the correct snap ring plier will do.  Came off easily.  Thanks for the offer though Don.   Hub even pressed in and out nicely. :2vrolijk_21:
