Definitely one of the best 135 miles you'll ever ride!  Did it last year with 9 scooters from Dallas, What a Blast!

Chuck (CAP) found a road last weekend.....Mosquito Ridge Rd. out of Forest Hill, Ca.  It has over 600 curves, twists and switchbacks in 36 miles.  He rode up as far as he could before the snow had the road closed.  I'll be doing that one in another month or so. :2vrolijk_21:

Yea, but it looks to me like I'm going to have to make another trip to Florida before you two are going to make it out here. :nixweiss:

I just got plane tickets from Sacramento to Miami for $150 each! :2vrolijk_21:  No refund and coach and one stop.....but at that price, it was something we could afford. :nixweiss:

Come on out Mike.......you could ride Jim's bike......he never rides it. :huepfenlol2:

Where's Forest Hill, Ca? I Googled it and came up with some place near Daly City... ain't no snow there.

I've ridden some of the roads in this thread. Hwy 36 is a classic, probably one of the best, if not the best, motorcycle roads in the country. Got some great roads listed here. Here's a couple more in N. Cali. to consider. Hwy 128 from Cloverdale to the coast, Scaggs Springs Road near Santa Rosa out to the coast, Hwy 20 -- Willits to Ft. Bragg or vice versa (actually, you can pretty much expect awesomeness from any rural road that goes over the coastal range from 101 to the coast in Northern Cali).

Go east out of Sacramento on I-80 east, up the hill.  When you get to the town of Auburn (28 miles) turn south east on Forest Hill Rd, go across Forest Hill Bridge (  highest bridge in Calf. and third highest in the nation......  http://www.placercountyhistoricalsociety.org/Histories/Bridge.htm   ) and a few more miles up the hill is Foresthill.

Hwy 9 goes from Los Gatos to Santa Cruz: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_State_Route_9

The stretch of Hwy 152 that I like goes from Gilroy to Watsonville: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_State_Route_152

An additional benefit of the 152 ride is when you get to Watsonville, you can stop at Gizdich Ranch for some of the best pie you will ever have: http://www.gizdich-ranch.com/index.php

I grew up riding on the Left coast .  Mosquito Ridge road is great , like many in "Gold Country" , Hwy 49 among them.

Hwy 84 from the Bay to Coast 1 is another , at the summit you hit "4 corners " where Alices Restraunt is a long favorite stop, and Skyline which runs from Hwy 92 on the north down to Santa Cruz .. a phenomenal road .  Off that there's Tunitas Creek Rd, and Upper Page Mill ..both quite entertaining.

Carmel Valley Canyon Road is wonderful , just mind the "cattle grates" they can get a bit slippery .

OK really sounds like a GREAT area to ride! Maybe just saying maybe this area would be a GREAT choice for a GTG. Should put it on the list for next years West CVO GTG.  :nixweiss: :2vrolijk_21:

The Nor Cal crew rides these roads often.  Here's a link to what most who attended have said that it was the best GTG they've been on......five days on the road, staying at a different location each night (most of the photos are posted after page 3)...........  http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=27606.0

The challenge (as I learned in putting that one together) becomes finding hotels and/or restaurants that can accomodate everybody.  Most of the roads that I listed above aren't anywhere close to a city or even a town that has a hotel or motel of any size.  Even if it's just chain hotels (Best Western, Super 8, etc.) they're usually to small.  Then restaurants in these little towns are the same way......one cook and one or two waitresses. :nixweiss:  Logistically, it's just a real challenge.

But great rides for smaller groups of eight to ten bikes and we do that often on the weekends.  The challenge for us that live in Nor Cal is to find roads that we've never ridden before.  Getting "lost" would really make my day! :2vrolijk_21:

Terrie just got her arm out of a cast (broke her wrist) so for her first ride out we decided to just take it easy and stay kind of close to Sac.

We headed out Hwy. 16 up through the Capay Valley, Rumsey, etc.   A great ride, sun was out......all the almond orchards were in full bloom (Sun. was the Capay Valley Almond Festival), very little traffic.....just a great day.  We rode....and rode.....and rode some more.  Got to Hwy. 20 and turned east towards Williams.  Rode that for a ways and came to a road called Leesville.

Turned right onto Leesville and immediatly it was a collage' of patches on top of patches.  I'd never been on this road before.  We rode for a few miles and then stopped and discussed turning back (because of Terrie's wrist).  As we continued to ride and talk about it (wireless intercom), suddenly it smoothed out and we could do 50 mph easily.

Beautiful scenery, one lane road and no traffic.......I don't think Don's cows had ever seen a motorcycle before.....it was a perpetual stampede with the calves (beef cattle) as we followed the road along the fence lines.  It became very pot-holly again, after a number of miles......then packed dirt (which we could actually get up to 60 mph on....this was actually the best part of this road).  And it continued to be patch on top of patch, on top of patch asphalt, smooth asphalt and graded dirt road.  But the scenery was incredable!

We rode through Leesville (just a ranch and what looks like a hotel from the 1800s) and turned right onto Leesville-Ladoga Rd. Where we passed a ranchers wife in a big SUV driving like somebody was chasing her (she probably drive that road every day) but she was very quick to get on her side of the road with the two right wheels off the pavement......and eventually we passed a guy on a dirt bike that was dressed like a rancher.

We stopped in Ladoga at a little dive called Squaw Creek Inn & Resort.  Looked to be the only business around there....little grocery store/bar/cafe.  But they made two of the best cheeseburgers that we've had in a long, long time!  They have gas pump there also, but didn't check on the grade of gas.

Great ride, increable views as the little one lane goat trail climbs up and over a mountain and overlooks a valley of green, green cattle ranches, sargam and sedan grass and forests ringing the little valleys on either sides of the little canyons.  I wish we'd have taken pics.

We finally rode out to Maxwell on I-5, headed straight across for Hwy 45 South through Colusa and Knights Landing to Hwy. 113 south to Woodland and back home.

Chuck, this would be another ride that you might be interested in.....in your exploration of Nor Cal. :2vrolijk_21:

Rode Hwys 9, 25, 152, 156, 1 and Nacimiento-Ferguson Road and a couple of others this weekend. I had heard of Nacimiento and have been wanting to ride that road for a long time. Finally got to do it and was a little dissapointed. While it is very twisty (which I like), it was also pretty rough with a lot of gravel wash and some slides (which I don't like). We rode from the coast inland so the views weren't great. I imagine the views would be fantastic heading west instead of east. Since the one lane, tree shaded, switchback road is so rough and gravel strewn, you really can't safely ride it very fast... the awesome ocean views to the west shouldn't be too distracting while cruising easily. All in all, I think my favorite road among those I rode this weekend is Hwy 25 from King City to Hollister. Great motorcycle road.

Yep, you definately took that ride in the wrong direction.  Nacimiento is not a road that you want to take at any kind of speed....just a slow cruise. :2vrolijk_21:

Chuck (CAP) was over on 25 on Sat. did you see a silver SERG?

So where's everybody riding to this coming weekend?  Both days are going to be in the mid 70s! :2vrolijk_21:

They don't plow, yes plow, and clean Nacimiento untill early summer. It's so dirt and gravel strewn in winter you somtimes wonder if it is paved! We rode it last year a week before it was plowed and a week after, what a difference. I'll never ride it in winter again.
25 is great now through spring. The hills can be covered with giant masses of colored flowers. In the height of summer, temps can reach over 120, not much fun then.

Will be riding in Northern CA early next week.  Riding out, as trip is planned we will be in Reno NV Sunday night and Arcata CA on Monday night.  Then heading up the coast on Tuesday and going through OR and WA coast before we head back home to East TN.  36 sure looks like my Kind of road.

Not sure the route the group planned from Reno to Arcata.

When you're in Arcata, hope you get the chance to ride Avenue Of The Giants (old Hwy 101 winding through the redwoods) and eat at the Samoa Cookhouse (west side of the bay across from Eureka), and very close to Redwood HD.

Samoa Cookhouse fed all the loggers, and now is a restaurant with great food served family style and all you can eat.  I've been there several times, and we're taking a group of 24 people down there for the Avenue and Samoa.  The reviews say people go there for the experience, which is true, not for the food...but the food is worth the visit.
