License Frame done ...
« on: February 13, 2010, 03:04:32 AM »

Started life as a Kury 9182 ... I did all the work to the frame, Boitnott's did the painting and the gold leaf.
I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out, they did a terrific job of matching the Spiced Rum.

There are 4 holes drilled through the fender and 4 nuts holding it on. Instead of using the standard mounting of a 9182, I modified the frame so there are now 4 "studs" instead of screws. Same principle, just a lot smoother looking. Also filled the ball-mill area on top and bottom for a flat surface. Here is a pic before it was mounted, you can see the studs. Plate mounts from the back (like all 9182's). Ultimately it is no easier or harder to mount/change the plate as a regular 9182. I also made a smoked cover out of plexiglass, although it won't really show until I mount the plate.

Great job - Looks super. Does it still have a backing between the plate and the fender? Did you use anything between the plate/backing and fender to prevent scratching?

No backing plate. I used highly compressable neoprene cut to the exact dimension of the frame. It's the black material that you see where the plate will go. The neoprene allows both for adjustment in gap between the fender and lp frame, and seals the deal all the way around. The frame does not hit the fender at all. Another pic attached showing how tight you can make the tolerance.

Where did you purchase the neoprene?

You can get all kinds of any type of neoprene foam rubber or neoprene rubber from Mcmaster-Carr. Not sure the exact part number as it was stuff I had laying around the shop. You can order it 12"x12" sheets or any neoprene foam, or soft neoprene rubber (I think I used 40 Durometer, or maybe 30 Durometer) will work. Key is making sure that it can be compressed easily (and rebounds). Pretty sure it was 3/16". Obviously, the harder the rubber or foam the less thick you want it to be.

Another material that works really well is 1/4" yoga mat. Great stuff.

Best I've seen by far.

<to everyone> Thanks again for the great feedback!!

With paint and everything, how much $ did you have into this?

Well -
I have about 6hrs in modifying the Kury frame (yeah ... too bad it doesn't come this way).

I don't want to talk about the price for paint, I'm sure there are painters on the forum that want some business and I don't want to ( nor can I )put a price on talent. Suffice it to say I got a fair deal, although the end result could have been better. The lines on the lettering are not as sharp as I would have liked. I'm sure that it's just me, but it is there nonetheless.

So back to the post here is all I can say:
Getting an SESG in Spiced Rum                  $30,999 (MSRP)

Getting an SESG with my Licence Frame      Priceless!!

The cool thing is that once you make it yours - it really IS priceless!! So how much $$ do I have in it?
ALWAYS ... too much!!

Thanks again for the GREAT feedback ... MOD ON!!

Wow, Very nicely done. I wondered why Harley made such a great looking rear fender on my new CVO but then stuck an ugly license plate mount on it? Wish someone would come out with a production curved license plate frame for the new CVO's! Yours is awesome!!

Hey TIF2,  I just ordered the same mufflers and headers for my bike.  Wondering what you decided to do about the tuner.  My local bike shop (not my dealer) convinced me to go with the PC V and the auto tune.  Seems like it should be a nice set up.

That is simply AWESOME.  Not an original statement, but very true.

Great work.

FWIW: I was out riding today on my 2010 CVO Street Glide and decided to stop by the local Harley dealer.

I was curious about why my security key on the speedo was on constantly.

A friend of mine who is a Master mechanic said that is was because of the Kuryakyn 9182 tag bracket. It needs one of those voltage adjusters like we used for the turn signals.

Anybody else having this issue??

No issue on mine and do find it hard to believe they are related

It will be easy enough to verify. All I have to do is plug the stock unit into the harness at the right side of the tail light. If the light goes off then the mechanic is right if not then there is another issue.

I do find it odd that there is no other issue except that the security key stays solidly lit on the dash while I am riding.  :nixweiss:  :nixweiss:

Started life as a Kury 9182 ... I did all the work to the frame, Boitnott's did the painting and the gold leaf.
I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out, they did a terrific job of matching the Spiced Rum.

Very nice....

Looks Great!  Where did you get the neoprene?
