Now ya'll know I'll not be doing anything to Joy's engine yet, right?

But let's just say I did, what cams are youze using in our 80" Evo's these days? I've always used Sifton cams on Evos in the past. Not made since Tom passed. Haven't built an Evo since then either.

Joy has an S&S Super E, Dyna single-fire ignition, and Cycle Shack M-pipe Exhaust. I don't plan on changing any of those components. What cams are ya'll seeing work well with this motor these days?

Howie, don't know if this will help you any.  But I was talking to a good friend a couple nights ago on the phone and he swore, over and over again, that no one was making Evo cams anymore :nixweiss: .  Of course me might have been full of chit.

I had heard that too, which is the reason for my inquiry! Maybe somebody's got a nice used Evo cam, with at least 2 or 3 good lobes left on it, to throw in there!!! ::) :P ;D

I've still got those couple of old Evo cams in the bottom of the tool box that I told you that full of chit friend about that night on the phone.  Don't know if they're flat but I'm sure they're not square!

Are you looking for bolt in or are you planning head work? V-Thunder (Comp Cams ) makes some great stuff for evo's. I did a build a while back with mild head work and a EVL-3030 cam that worked out very well. For bolt in try a EVL-3020.

Would prolly port and flow the heads, and add a lil compression, 9.5-10:1 Jim. That's always worked well added to the Stage I setup I have on there. When I do this, I'll need to match a good cam up to that. Andrews EV-3 didn't have it on the bottom at all. Tried it once. But that was on the WG, which is a lot heavier. It pulled great on top though! The EV-27 looks OK, but might not have it on top. But those might be good 80" choices. Wasn't going too radical at all with this. That's what the Pro Street's for! Just need to wake her up a bit! Reliably! ;)

there are SEVERAL companies that are making TODAY cams that will work in the 80in EVOs

I have one, new, bought just this past June that I'm going to put in come December when I do my build.

It's a Wood W6 cam

here's a link to their site http://www.woodcarbs.com/cams.htm
when you read that chart, the TW cams are for the Twin Cam engines, the 'W' designation can be used in the EVOs

look at and read the specs for the W6 ...... it's a great bolt on cam for running stock stuff.  It will want higher compression than you get with stock heads.  I'm putting on SE heads and using a cometic .030 head gasket to get the compression that this cam will work with.  You could use even more compression than what I just mention by the various methods, different pistons, custom head work, deck height, etc..

to me, the good part is that with this cam you don't HAVE to do that. This cam will work and provide really good kick butt perf. using stock pistons with SE heads (and smaller head gasket).  Also, as I said, this cam will work with stock valves, valve springs... etc

I'm running a compu-fire single fire ign.    love it, rev limit set to 6K and advance set to 35

Andrews still makes cams for the EVOs

Like I said, there are several choices out there ...... the ones that I looked were for BOLT ON ..... to be used with STOCK heads, valves, valve springs, and pistons
Many of them also make HIGH LIFT cams for the EVO .....  in which case you will need to do other mods to the bike to use them ......

Headquarters makes cams that will work in the EVO .... some bolt in, some you need head/other work due to lift and compression requirements for the cam to perform

Howie,

This isn't going to help you much, because I cannot find the specs...  But my last killer EVO motor had Headquarters cams and heads - I bought them as a matched package - probably about 9 years ago.  Cams bolted in with no issues and heads bolted on with no issues.  Also installed a Mikuni carb at the time.  Motor was incredible for its day...  Just a bit over 100 ft. lbs. and HP.   :2vrolijk_21:

Howie:

Here are a couple of "THREADS" I became involved in I purposefully put all the data together in that thread to be of help to someone such as yourself whom might later have such a curiosity of what to put in their bike over @ Harley Tech Talk talking about an "EVO" Cam....as you can imagine after you read the "thread" if you choose to it took some time to put all of the information together....essentially other's have asked the same question you are asking about what is a good cam for an "EVO" bike....so I shared my experience...........

Of course remember my recommendation for this cam is for an evo engine which will basically remain "stock" while yet looking for something with more "pull" and "umphf" per say.

CLICK AND VIEW:

THREAD A

THREAD B

If you don't want to read everything in this particular "thread", suffice it to say I believe the "Crane" V~Thunder 3010 is an excellent cam for any of our FXR bikes.  Others will say perhaps a Andrews EV-27....but the "THREAD" I have attached will address why the V~Thunder 3010 is in my bike and why I have enjoyed it so much.

By the way I am "ClassicRider2002" within this website, hence referring to My 2002 RKC.

Regards,

Tim

... what cams are youze using in our 80" Evo's these days?

Howie, you've probably forgotten more about Evo builds than I've ever learned.  But since you asked, look at the link on this board that Mikey put up.  It has a couple of posts about why I went with the EV27.  Bottom line is that there are a whole bunch of cams for Evos out there so you have to decide what your build will look like and pick a cam to fit with the package.  Torque or HP, bottom end grunt or top end.  I talked to a bunch of folks and read a lot of forums and bought a book "101 Performance Projects for Harley Davidson Evolution Motorcycles" (I think that's the title).
