Fxr2/3/4 Enricher Cable/Knob/Kit
« on: January 03, 2009, 04:22:50 PM »

Took my fuel tank off today to do a few things underside. Looking around; I noticed my enricher knob was broken (kept wondering why enricher knob would not lock out when pulled out) and checked my Fxr4 parts manual to find PN to replace. Found "Enricher Cable" pg #20,...pg #21 Item # 19, PN: 29229-88B Cable enricher.

I am going to replace it as it is broken but looking at it; it is made of cheap a$$ plastic crap and no wonder it broke.

Does anyone know if, where, a replacement/aftermarket kit for one made of stainless, or some other more durable alloy can be purchased?

Thanks Guys...Blaine  :2vrolijk_21:

Sorry Blaine. I never liked or ran the stock CV's. The enrichener is built directly into the S&S carb. I'll check and see if there's any better replacement for yours. If I do, I'll let ya know! :2vrolijk_21:

I just checked the J&P Cycle Catalog. They show Billet Knobs from Novello. They're the only one in there though. ;)

Thanks man  :2vrolijk_21:...I've been google searching and looking through J&P catalog but nothing yet. I mean it ain't no big deal to replace and the money for a new stock one is around $15.00; just tryin to see if I can find a more durable setup than the plastic S&#T HD put on there. It's the plastic threaded sleeve the tighting nut is attached to that is S*#T; ya tighten down to much and snap, crackle, pop  ;D ....My DUMB ASS  :o  :(  >:( ...but hey, live and learn  ;D

Thanks for lookin out for me Pete  :2vrolijk_21:, I looked briefly at it; will check it in more detail when I can. Mainly looking to just replace the stock cable with a metal alloy aftermarket like item if one exists but will look closer at this one  :2vrolijk_21:

I broke my plastic crap thing in June .............. bought a HD replacement ...... cheaper plastic then the stock one back in 2000

I did however find a chrome cover that goes over the plastic knob ......  If you want I'll look around and see if I can find that PN

the only one that I've ever seen is still the plastic thing.......... the chrome knob cover makes it 'look' better, but it's still plastic under that ..... it functions 'ok' but I'd rather have a 'real' cable.

the stock cable will work with 'many' carbs, and will work with the Mikukni that I'm putting on in my build  :DD

I found many knob covers, but no replacement knobs at all. I looked around pretty good too Blaine. That Novello one isn't available anymore either. :nixweiss:

be careful when you install it..... DO NOT try to tighten down the nut on the back of it that holds it in the slot in the bracket.  If you over tighten it, you'll break the plastic neck, don't ask me how I know this ................  :'(

Just got of the phone with parts dept at HD Mobile. Asked if enricher cable PN: 29229-88B was in stock? She told me no but a BUNCH were due in any day and they normally have bunches in stock but a BUNCH of folks came in the past few weeks and bought them all. I asked her did she want me to tell her why so many folks were buying them? She said yes. I told her because they all break so easy and they are pieces of S^$T....She laughed and said I wasn't the first to express that opinion..............Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh..........But, I do feel a bit better now :2vrolijk_21:  ;D

Try the J&P catalog.  They have choke knobs and covers for the plastic ones (four pages of them from various manufacturers, mild to custom):

I like this one, myself, of course I'm kinda conservative:

Went back through the thread--had forgotten that Blaine already checked J&P.  Still, if his knob is threaded, I'd get a 10-32 nut and see if it uses the same thread as the J&P unit.  And it seems like the set screw models wouldn't care what thread was on the cable--or maybe I don't understand the situation.  On the other hand, checking this on another forum tells me that this is a common problem and the HD part is only something like $12 so maybe that's the way to go.

I guess I'm lucky to have never broken mine.

Mike...May be a little problem on my part in my explaining what I have been dealing with. I have had no problem finding choke knobs; they are a dime a dozen.

Picture the knob attached to the cable which then is enclosed in the plastic threaded sleeve collar with the plastic tightening nut to the plastic threaded collar which is mounted in the slot of the cable bracket. Behind the bracket slot is a metal type lock washer with a metal nut behind it; then the cable enclosed by plastic/rubber continues to the carb.

When tightening the plastic nut; it allows you to pull the knob allowing the cable to come out and lock in place for normal warm up. If not tight enough when pulling the knob out; cable will not lock in place and you have to hold it out.

So....my dumb a$$ decides to tighten the metal nut from the rear of the bracket which puts more pressure on the front plastic nut than it can stand; causing the plastic threaded collar of which the front plastic and rear metal nut are mounted on to break.

So, my issue has never been the knob; rather, the entire enricher cable assy as a whole unit...Seems to me if the threaded collar the plastic and metal nuts are mounted on was made of some type of metal alloy; then when over tightening occurs you would just tighten till ya couldn't tighten any more rather than the collar breaking....But, we know why the MOCO makes then out of plastic don't we? So all the other dummies like me can go back down and buy another $12.00 piece of S^*T and then hope ya don't overtighten again

In other words; if ya tighten correctly; they work great...If not....They be pieces of S^*T...Ta quote HUBBARD; "There endeth the lesson"  ;D

Whew..............That typeing was a lot of work in itself  ;D

Oh...went the $12.00 way to fix; as fas I can tell, that be the ONLY way  ;D

Sorry to put you through all that explaining, Blaine.  Like I said, I guess I'm lucky mine hasn't broken yet--I've never paid that much attention to it, except to remove it from the bracket behind the coil once.  And I hardly ever pull it out and twist-lock it to start the bike.

On the contrary; no need to be sorry;

I learned the hard way so just wanted to make sure everyone who hasn't been through this or is not quite as knowledgable like I wasn't; doesn't have to go through this if they don't need too  :2vrolijk_21:

SO... now the fun begins; looks like I gotta pull the carb off to get the cable out to replace  ::)  ;D

that sounds right ....... I broke mine last June............ I was putting on a Mikuni and was going to use the stock choke cable, broke it putting it back on..... turns out I had some other problems with the carb kit ..... wrong parts were sent..... they sent me the breather bolts for a TC

anyways, I had to take the carb off to change out the choke cable ........ seems like to me, I had the Mikuni on the bike twice, and the stock one on and off the bike twice that same day ..... needless to say, I did get tired of changing out the carbs.

I am running the stock carb now, but will be changing it when I do my build.  I THINK I have all the right parts for the carb kit now ..... I'll find out in a week or so

you pretty much got it right about how that cable gets broken .... and I don't know of any replacement for it, other than the HD part

that sounds right .......

Well....I never done this before; so, time to sit down and read the manual and see If I can figure out what I'm doing...BETCHA I won't get mine changed in one day, much less changeing it two or three times  ;D

Thinking seriously about following Howie's idea and changin to the S&S and be done with all the Choke assy BS...Don't know yet...Thanks for the info and wish me that I don't FRICK something up  ::) ;D

Believe me....The thought crossed my mind...Bro-Law has one on his 89 FXR; seems so much simpler.

Much simpler, easy to tune, and all 1-piece. It's the only carb I'll use. Besides, NOTHING looks better on an HD than an S&S Teardrop A/C Cover!!! :2vrolijk_21:

My Revtech 110 Evo came with a Mikuni HSR45. I'll have to see how that goes. But i'm not convinced it's staying on there even though it is brand new! But I do have the S&S A/C assembly on that Mikuni. (See above statement again!) ;)

Make sure you get the complete install kit w/manifold and all mounting hardware and A/C assembly. Pipe the breather from both heads to a tee and route beneath the bike. Don't forget new throttle/idle cables. S&S uses a different mount on the carb. They do make adapters to mount stock cables on an S&S Super. Up to you which way ya wanna go with that one. ;)

Ok I choose new knob!!!!!!

Focus on a new knob, Blaine.....and save the remainder of the $415.00 for the trip this summer.....OH YEAH!!!   :bananarock:

$425.00 S&S carb vs $10.00 for new knob.....lol even call ELVIS PLACE that you see on ebay he's got a lot of ole' FXR parts probably would have a used one...... :2vrolijk_21:

I wouldn't own another S&S carb.....been there done that....

:ROFLOL:....Don't worry Tim, It's all just a thought. Am considering it but haven't made up my mind yet. One thing is for sure; I ain't paying $425 or even close to that for one. IF I get one it will be used, NOS (If there is such a thing) and way less than $425.00...If I happen on one for a good deal; I'll grab it up, but that's the only way....You should know me by now; I am a CHEAP B@$^@&D... :2vrolijk_21:  ;D

Wow; had so much fun with the guys pickin on our buddy TiMidator over on "Mikey's Build" thread  ;D I had to FINALLY go out (Actually just had the time to mess with it) and see if I could replace the new enricher cable without tearing up or breaking something else.

Really surprised at how simple and easy it was to pull the carb off :vrolijk27: but very happy to say all is done and now I'm gonna clean up real good (well) under the tank area and put tank back on.....OH!.....And I got that SHINY new knob for it too  ;D.... Soon ta RIDE again. Thanks again guys for all the input  :2vrolijk_21:

OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH  TIM.......S&S is still a possibility but not high on the radar screen...Like I said; if a kit pops up REALLY< REALLY< REALLY> REALLY cheap.....I MIGHT go for it; for now I'm still stock carb  :2vrolijk_21:  ;D

Glad ya got it back together ok elvislee  !!  yeah, getting the carb off it's too big a job, but if you had a 'real enricher cable' instead of the POS HD sells, you wouldn't have had to do that    :huepfenlol2:

been there, done that too   :huepfenlol2:

it was fun picking on TIMadatior ..... huh     :huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2:

Hey TiMidator...See my reply on reply #24 I posted for Mike  :2vrolijk_21: Yea man, I had to purchase a whole complete new enricher cable HD PN: 29229-88D. To replace the new cable I had to pull the CVO carb off the bike as I didn't seem to be able to get a wrench onto the plastic nut that connects the cable end into the body of the carb. Also it woulda been a PITA (At least for me) to try and reinstall the new cable into the carb body while still on the bike. Seemed to me to be quicker but also more accessible with the carb off.

Once the carb was off I simply unscrewed the nut, pulled the old cable out of the carb body, then removed the old cable from the cable starter valve, removed the spring, installed the new cable through the spring, then new cable was reinserted into the starter valve then the new cable is now fully assembled and put back into the carb body and very carefully tightened down.

I then opened my newly purchased SHINY NEW CHROME BING BLING pull knob and mounted it over the plastic stock choke knob on my new enricher cable. Then ran the knob end of the cable back through to the cable mounting bracket, reattached the carb back to the rubber seal ring that helps hold the carb onto the intake manifold. Went to other side of bike and mounted cable into the cable bracket, finger tightened metal nut at rear of cable up to the bracket, finger tightened plastic nut up to the bracket to allow the cable to stay out when pulled and Badda Bing-Badda-Bing...New cable is on and new chrome Bling-Bling cable knob HD PN:29431-97 is on  :2vrolijk_21: ;D
