H D Oil Temp Gauge
« on: December 24, 2009, 03:46:34 PM »

OK, next question...
I just had a SE  Oil Temp Gauge installed in the fairing in place of the stock air temp gauge, and the lighting is different from original.  The perimeter lights up, same color (orange) as stock, but the numbers and dots between do not light.  Can't read it at night!   Any input? This doesn't sound normal to me, but what do I know?  :nixweiss:

I'm not right in front of mine but that sounds right. If I remember, only the background was lit. I switched all four gauge bulbs out for LEDs.

AJ, thinking of doing the same thing.  Where did you get the LED's?

HD does not offer an oil temp gauge whose illumination method is an exact match to the gauges in the new bikes.  What you've got is as good as you're going to get.

It's disappointing for sure.  On the 05, the lighting did not matter that much as the other gauges weren't well lit (except speedo/tach)..   On the 10 bike, you can easily read all the gauges (except oil temp). HD doesn't even use the same vendor to make the oil temp gauge-I would assume.

The temp gauge kits were on backorder for several months (until Dec 12) and I thought maybe the problem would be worked out?

The kit I used was in dealer stock.  The kit I got even had the reducer bushing in it and had no provisions to put in the oil lines.  But the lighting still didn't match.

There was also the problem of the needles matching, and not having the needle stops when they (MoCo) first came out with them. :(

I just spoke to the local dealer about this issue.  He tells me that I was sold the WRONG PART!
Seems that I purchased part #75320-05a, but should have gotten 74707-09, which is the updated gauge specifically for the 09-10 SEUC,  which will match the lighting!
Talk about pissed!   I've already paid to have the thing put in.  Parts guy must be new.   The guy that gave me the new info has been there longer, and thinks the dealer will take care of me on the part and labor.  One can only hope.   :soapbox:

Just checked the number at Chicago Harley online. 74707-09 shows up as an oil pressure and not the accessory oil temp gauge.

One would expect a new oil temp gauge to be posted in P&A.  It's not been there yet.

That's why I always try to go to the parts counter with part number rather than part descriptions.  No one at the parts counter is going to know what we're doing better than we do.

;) I have a question about changing the 4 instrument bulbs to LED. I have trouble reading the red at night on my 2010 SEUC and wanted to change them. The mechanics told me that they were not able to change them and I would need to change the gauges. Any knowledge on the 2010's? Can I change them out?

I ordered one in Nov also and the ship date was to be Dec 12th..  I found one in stock at a dealer 60 miles away and isntalled it.  Hopefully for you, the delay means they are fixing the lighting issue.  If it is the same gauge I have, shame on the MOCO..

(The gauge I have looks ok but does not light well like the rest of the CVO gauges).

I knew of this lighting problem before I orderd it, But I ride little at night would not make a differance to me. Just the fact that it has been backorded for 3 months gets my butt.   Doc.

Ya know, I was looking at the old gauge, and  am able to pull out the old bulb without a problem.  New one is already in, much dimmer than original, but I'm wondering if the bulbs could be interchanged, and if that would make a difference?

You would have to change bulbs to be sure.  I just believe the 09 and 10 bikes have updated lighting in the 4 small gauges.  The small 4 gauges on the 10 light up 10 times better than on  my 05 and the gauges look the same.

I think when the gauge gets to me I will just swap the air gauge bulb to the oil temp gauge then the gauge may be bright as the other gauges even if backround lighted.   Doc
