Harley Adventure Concept Bike
« on: March 24, 2016, 10:39:19 PM »

Interesting. Although you can buy a carducci custome adventure bike built around the Sportster power plant for $72K, will Harley entertain entering the adventure market with their water cooled 750 engine?

If I was going this way, I'd get a Beemer.  Just sayin'.

There is a 2016 CVO Pro Street Breakout next to it and a V-Rod after the Pro Street.

I would love for them to make a legit effort in this market.
But they had better *really* get it right as the customers in this market would love to make a laughing stock of them.
If they could actually make a serious bike, that would be fantastic.
It would be a good place to use all that denim paint.

HD shuttered Buell so, in doing that, gave up on the Ulysses.   I still wish I'd bought one of those when they were being almost given away at the end.

Buell was loosing money. (Always did) so that's why they dumped that project.

I would not trust my life on a Harkey deep into the backcountry. I once rode across a mountain range (off road) did not see anyone for three days. The BMS GS performed flawless. (Picture from another ride in Portugal)

It's based on the water cooled Street 750. So far, a complete unknown, but they might be super reliable.

I was on an off road adventure with a member here when he went down on his GS and his engine guard punched a hole in a "valve cover", what a literal and logistics mess that was.
There's a few guys over on theADV forum that do the around the world thing on modified Harley's. Not without problems, but all the different bikes doing that sort of riding have inherent issues.

1: crappy engine guards.

2:  easy 25 minute fix on the trail. Not a big deal at all.

I have done that repair many times when I have ridden with people that don't understand what good bike protection are.

1 top of the line guards
2 no quick fix when the cover has shattered. I've helped fixed them before with 5 min JB
Been riding dirt all my life. Replaced clutch packs stators etc in the middle of the forest

Don't misunderstand, we have 2 boxer bikes and will be getting a new GS1200 for the little woman within the next month. Just won't be taking it in the dirt much as I much prefer a Vtwin or inline  2-3  on the bigger bikes.

if JB don't work on the trail you are SOL  :nixweiss:  thankfully never seen one chattered. Just punched out.

Rolled a GS down a VERY step hill in Portugal a couple of weeks ago. Luckily only the clutch lever broke of. (Soft mud an no rocks)

So I took a good hard look at the pictures and mostly what I see is a 750cc HD Sport Bike with skins and some modifications you could do in your garage if you wanted to throw money at a project. And then what do you have? A Hog with some adventure lipstick. If HD is serious about the ADV community, they need to look to make a R800GS/R1200GS KILLER! Otherwise they are just an also ran and in this case they'd be in about 11th or 12th place.

Honda has come out with their new entry, the Africa Twin w 988cc nestled right between the 800 and 1200 engine size with a great MSRP on the base model starting at $12999.

Or there is the KTM 1190 Adventure and Adventure R with prices starting at $16999

Or the KTM 1290 Super Adventure at MSRP of $20999 with 160 HP which matches the Ducati Multistrada which some contend is an ADV but realistically it's more of a very flexible Sport Bike with terrain options  ;D

To beat BMW GS, the Adventure leader, HD needs to first eclipse the competition first - Good Luck HD.

The Litre class isn't the ONLY adventure market. It is not a matter of "start with 150 horse or go home"'.
Certainly there is an adventure segment that does not want a 700# monster. There are or have been offerings in the middleweight class from BMW Honda Suzuki, KTM, and Triumph.
The KLR650 was an adventure mainstay for decades. Under 500 pounds, 50 hp(?)
I would think that the Street motor at least has a *chance* of being the basis of an adventure and there's no shame in entering a market with an entry-level offering.
