Re: S&S Cycle-Full speed ahead
« Reply #2 on: February 03, 2005, 03:59:24 PM »

Full speed ahead

A need for more speed spawned S&S Cycle Inc. in 1958, and the mission hasn't changed as the third-generation business continues to expand.

Specializing in the manufacture of performance-enhancing parts for Harleys and Buells, S&S Cycle last year expanded from its Viola, Wis., facility to the former Fleming Cos. building at 322 Causeway Blvd. in La Crosse.

"There's a demand for our product," said company president Brett Smith, the grandson of company founder George Smith Sr.

"We think we can do more overseas, but what we're looking at doing is expanding our existing product line in the V-Twin industry," Brett Smith said.

"Then, we're looking at expanding our existing product line in the power sports industry and new products in the power sports industry as a whole — ATVs and possibly water craft."

The business was born after veteran Army pilot George Smith Sr., came home to the Chicago area after World War II.

A passion for speed led to him improving the performance of a motorcycle he used to dominate area drag racing, and when others asked him how he did it, a hobby became a new occupation.

The late George Smith Sr. and his wife, Marge Smith, eventually moved to Viola where the business continued to flourish. The first product offered was lightweight aluminum pushrods, and the business soon pioneered the stroker motor with flywheels and connecting rods.

The Super B-Carborator was introduced in the 1970s when the V-Twin industry was exploding, former company president George Smith Jr. said.

"That is what put us on the map," George Smith Jr. said.

"Then what happened was Harley-Davidson enjoyed a remarkable resurgence in the 1980s, and to some degree, we have ridden the Harley-Davidson coat tails.
"In the 1990s, we took it one step farther by introducing complete engines, and an entirely new market sprang up," he said.

Brett Smith said his grandfather's "sole function was to make all motor cycles go faster."

"The simple equation was to increase the bore, lengthen the stroke and that equals larger displacement, more cubic inches and more horsepower."

The La Crosse expansion has created about 40 jobs in a company that employs about 310 full time staff and about 65 seasonal workers. More job hires are expected over the next two years.

The La Crosse facility is a distributing and manufacturing center, while the Viola facility now serves no shipping duties. A second building in La Crosse serves as the newly created Dealer Education and Certification Training Center.

Brett Smith worked for the company during summers as a student "and more times it was the undesirable jobs," he said.

He attended the US Military Academy at West Point, NY, spent five years in the Army, went to business school and then worked for Deere and Co.

It wasn't always his plan to join the family business, but in 2002 he was asked to replace a retiring uncle as chief financial officer. Last year, he was named president.

Experience elsewhere helped prepare Brett Smith for the role.

"The general family philosophy at S&S is (for) family members to go out and experience life in the outside world before they come to the business," said George Smith, Jr., who is now a board member and secretary of the board. "You have to have qualified people."

Brett Smith, 33, conceded it is rare for someone so young to be president of such a large company.

"Most people are not blessed to be in such a position where they don't only have the talent and ability, but the opportunity," he said. "I have worked hard, but the opportunity is a by-product of my heritage.

"Really, it is a blessing from God."

Business philosophy has been key to expanding the company and strengthening its grip on the motorcycle component market across the world.

"First of all, you've got to take care of your customer," George Smith, Jr. said. "We make parts that work well, and then you have to charge a fair price.

"The third point is you have to serve the customer after the fact," he said. "And while you're doing all those things, honesty and an up-front integrity is there.

"This is not rocket science," George Smith, Jr. said. "These are very simple business philosophies that too many companies lose sight of."

CINCINNATI, OH (January 30, 2005) S&S Cycle, Inc. was awarded Product of the Year at the V-Twin Expo for their new 93" alternator/generator Shovelhead-style engine. Dave Nichols of V-Twin Magazine and emcee for the V-Twin Expo awards banquet introduced S&S president, Brett Smith, as he accepted this prestigious award.

"It's an honor to be recognized for Product of the Year by V-Twin and this year's show has been the best ever,' said S&S president Brett Smith. "Congratulations go out to our world-class product and development team for making this award winning shovel engine," continued Smith. "James Simonelli has done a great job creating the Old School Shovel Tour for 2005 and we look forward to having another fun year with our friends in the industry."

S&S has built their 2005 ad campaign centering on this award winning 93" alternator/generator Shovel-style engine. The campaign, including the recently announced Old School Shovel Tour, will showcase the work of five top builders in the industry while promoting the new engine.

"We decided to go with the retro look for 2005; taking everybody by surprise while showcasing our latest offering," said S&S Communications Manager, James Simonelli. "Shovels are cool, sure enough, but shovels that are oil-tight with quiet valve-train and good power are really cool," continued Simonelli.

The S&S Old School Shovel Tour, co-sponsored by American Iron Magazine, will kick off at the Broken Spoke Saloon at Daytona on March 9, 2005, where all the bikes will be unveiled with the 93" alternator/generator Shovel-style engine. The famed builders will be on hand to meet and greet. Bike and builders will then continue on a tour including the July Shakedown Ride in July from La Crosse, WI to Earlville, IA, and the finale at the Broken Spoke in Sturgis. A prize giveaway bike, built by Tribal Motorworks, will be awarded to one very lucky ticket holder at the finale of the tour. The bikes will also be displayed at every stop on the S&S Show Tour.

The builders exhibiting in the Old School Shovel Tour include Kevin Alsop of Big Bear Choppers, Jesse Rooke of Jesse Rooke Customs, Big Mike of BMC Choppers, Paul Cox and Keino of Indian Larry Tribute Team, and Chica of Chica Customs.

S&S also received the V-Twin Expo Engine of the Year awards in 2004 for their 124" Super Sidewinder Plus and in 2003 for their 145" Tribute engines. In addition, S&S received the Street Chopper High Performance Product of the year in 2004 for the 124" Super Sidewinder Plus engine and in 1998 Hot Bike awarded S&S with the High Tech Product of the Year for the 4" bore family of engines including the 100", 107", and 113".

S & S products have alway been quality parts.
Have used their carbs on evrything up to the injected bikes.
The 86 Lowrider was a 98" S & S
The 95 Buel was a 96" S & S

Good stuff as far as I'm concerned.

Been thinking about building a shovel and will keep it mostly S & S

S&S Cycle Announces NHRA Contingency Sponsorship Program

VIOLA, WI (February 15, 2005) - S&S Cycle, Inc., today announced that it was implementing an exciting new contingency sponsorship program for all S&S-powered entries competing in the NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle class during the 2005 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing season.

S&S will be posting awards totaling $112,500.00 covering 15 NHRA national events.  For each of the fifteen events, cash awards will be distributed to teams using an S&S engine in the Pro Stock Motorcycle class as follows:

Winner             $3,500

Runner-up        $2,000

Semi-finalist      $1,000 each (2 for each race)

S&S entered the NHRA scene during the 2004 season, introducing its 160" Pro Stock racing engine through its involvement with George Smith and George Bryce of G Squared Motorsports.  This engine powered NHRA rookie rider Chip Ellis and the G Squared Motorsports team to a successful season, highlighted by capturing the ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals at the The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in October. The G Squared Motorsports Buell was the only V-Twin powered Pro Stock Motorcycle to win a race following the increased weight minimum change established mid-season.

Ellis had an impressive debut with the G Squared team in NHRA competition, scoring the No. 1 qualifying position at the prestigious 50th Anniversary U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis , IN.   Two weeks later in Reading , PA , Ellis backed up his Indianapolis effort with a No. 4 starting position before qualifying No. 2 in Las Vegas en route to winning the event.

The 34 year-old Florida native ended the season in Pomona with his second No. 1 position and powered to the semi-finals at the Auto Club of Southern California Finals, topping off a remarkable campaign with the 4th quickest run in Pro Stock history at 7.024 seconds aboard the G Squared S&S powered Buell, with its powerful S&S 160" engine.

In addition to Chip Ellis and the G Squared Motorsports entry, the following teams and riders have already chosen S&S power for the 2005 NHRA racing season: Mohegan Sun/Chris Rivas, Muzzy Racing/Ryan Schnitz, Two Wheel Travel/Dave Feazell and Harley Davidson of Rocklin/Matt Guidera.

"We have a rich heritage involving racing and going fast," said S&S Race Relations Manager, Charlie Hadayia .  "Working with the pros at G Squared and having a rider like Chip Ellis has allowed us the privilege of seeing our 160" Pro Stock engine succeed in the NHRA."

"Sponsoring the Pro Stock Motorcycle class of the NHRA is an excellent opportunity for us to continue our relationships with racers of the highest level," said S&S President, Brett Smith .  "It is critical for us to be involved with cutting-edge technology and to stay in touch with the best competitors in the industry, and this includes the NHRA."

"We are very excited to enter this arena by offering an exceptional V-Twin power plant that we know produces the horsepower and reliability to win at this level," continued Smith. "We have the finest engineers in the world who are constantly working to push the limits of V-Twin technology.  Couple that with the street smarts gained from many years of developing engines that go faster and you have a powerful combination that will continue to exceed expectations."

From the salt flats of Bonneville, to the success in the NHRA, S&S has a proven performance record of producing high-performance V-Twin engines, components, and assemblies.    For more information about G Squared Motorsports visit http://www.g2motorsports.net  .  Visit S&S Cycle at http://www.sscycle.com  .

S&S ANNOUNCES NEW DUAL FEEDBACK CLOSED-LOOP FUEL-INJECTION SYSTEM

VIOLA, WI (March 11, 2005) S&S Cycle announces plans to market its new Dual Feedback Closed-Loop Fuel-Injection system.  For almost 50 years S&S Cycle has been known as the performance leader in the V-Twin market.  Of their high performance engines, components, and assemblies, their fuel delivery systems have brought them the most success.  Without question, the S&S teardrop air cleaner over an S&S carburetor is recognized worldwide as a performance icon.

Shortly after third-generation family member, Brett Smith, joined the company in 2002 he made a commitment to the future by strategically focusing the company on the proven performance of S&S fuel delivery systems.  Working closely with the product development team, headed by Scott Sjovall, along with important input from engineer, Roy Meyer , they developed a dual feedback closed-loop fuel-injection system that would work in original equipment applications and continue to lead the performance industry.

The result of that effort is now here as S&S Cycle is the first company in the American V-Twin market to bring a Dual Feedback Closed-Loop Fuel-Injection system for big twins to the public.  The system will be available with either the traditional S&S teardrop air cleaner or the new dual-runner induction system.  This state-of-the-art system will increase engine performance while greatly reducing emissions output - essentially providing the best of both worlds.

"We have been testing this system in various settings for over a year," said S&S VP of product development, Scott Sjovall.  "In addition to extensive laboratory testing, we have been conducting real- world road tests with a multitude of bikes in remote locations, along with riding to rallies across the country and the daily testing around our facility in Viola," continued Sjovall.  "This is by far the most solid development program we've conducted for fuel delivery systems in years - this system has definitely proven its reliability and enhanced performance."

A select group of Original Equipment American V-Twin manufacturers will be using this system on specific 2006 models, taking advantage of the S&S closed-loop systems technology that allows a performance engine to meet stringent EPA guidelines and still deliver outstanding performance and excellent rideability.  However, the S&S closed-loop system is not limited to O.E. manufacturers; it will also be available to qualified S&S dealers this fall.

Performance enthusiasts and shops across the world will appreciate the S&S closed-loop system tuning capability.  Essentially it is self tuning, so once you load a basic map into the control module, the sensors - one per cylinder - will tune the bike constantly and for the life of the engine.  From cam changes to pipe swaps, the S&S closed-loop system will tune the bike without hours of time on a dyno. Additionally, as the engine is subject to different types of riding, altitude, climate and load, the S&S closed-loop system will watch the performance of each cylinder and keep the optimum fuel mixture, while maintaining superior emissions control.

"Over the years, fuel delivery systems have put us on the map," said S&S president, Brett Smith.  "Our re-commitment to these systems will allow us to be a one-stop experience for aftermarket performance enthusiasts, dealers, and OE's alike.  This dual closed-loop fuel injection system is a premium, state-of-the-art product that will both improve performance of the engine and reduce gaseous emissions as we prepare for inevitable regulatory changes in 2008," continued Smith.  "I am very proud of our world-class product development team for allowing us to be the first to bring this technology to the American V-Twin market; it is an honor to carry on the tradition that my Grandfather started back in 1958."

S&S Cycle has been a leading manufacturer of Proven Performance V-Twin motorcycle components and engines for over 45 years.  George Smith and Stanley Stankos founded the company in 1958 in Blue Island, Illinois .  Shortly after the founding of S&S, George, and his wife Marjorie (whose maiden name was also Smith), bought out Stanley Stankos and Smith & Stankos became Smith & Smith (S&S).  In 1969, S&S moved from Blue Island to Viola, Wisconsin and expanded to La Crosse , Wisconsin in 2004.  This 3rd generation business supplies components and/or engines to several large custom OEs including: American Ironhorse, Arlen Ness, Big Bear Choppers, Big Dog, BMC, Bourget Bike Works, Hellbound Steel, Swift, Titan, Ultra, Vengeance, & Victory (please see the S&S website for a complete listing).

GAINESVILLE, FL  (March 6, 2005) - S&S Cycle announces the debut of the S&S 124' Challenge Class at the AHDRA Screamin' Eagle Bike Week Nationals at Gainesville, Florida.

The introduction of the new S&S 124" Challenge Class presented 6 racers, all using the popular S&S 124" engine.  These racers were Rob Schopf, Michael Ray, Jim an, Joey Sternotti, Clay Wilwert, and Gary Elliot. Four of the six bikes posted runs in the 10's with an running an impressive 10.298 at 129.77 in the opening round of eliminations. Schopf won the day having the fastest numbers to win the class debut with a 10.355 at 130.68 mph.  Ironically, he used the same still-sealed engine he received from S&S for the 124" VFI Challenge covered by Hot Bike last year, which he also won.

This new class was established following the success of the S&S 124" VFI Challenge Project in 2004.  This effort, involving S&S Cycle and the AHDRA, has been designed to promote racing to individuals and teams from a grass-roots level.  In addition to the seasoned veteran, this class provides an opportunity for the average racing enthusiast to show their stuff at the track.  For details about this class visit the rules page on the AHDRA web site at http://www.ahdra.com/rulesssc.html .

Three different Pro Stock bikes equipped with the S&S 160" Pro Stock engines were also on hand for exhibition and competitive runs.  "It was very rewarding to have all three S&S powered Pro Stock bikes run in the 7.0's and the fan response to all the new G2/S&S products debuted was very exciting," said George Bryce of G2 Motorsports.

G2 rider Chip Ellis stayed true to the word consistency with exhibition runs of 7.07, 7.08, 7.10, and 7.04 on the 2004 G2 S&S powered NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle.  "We've been so busy building customer bikes; I'll be starting the racing season with my 2004 Pro Stock chassis and engines," said G2 rider, Chip Ellis.  "This really goes to show how tough and dependable those S&S motors are."

Mohegan Sun Racing showed off their new NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle with the support of the G2 Motorsports team.  This S&S V-Twin powered bike ran a 7.09 at 188 mph on the first pass, fresh off the trailer, with Chip Ellis at the controls.  "That 7.09 was way beyond our expectations," said G2's George Bryce. "We expected a 7-something, but that was fantastic," added Bryce.  Chip's second run on this bike turned an impressive 7.04, creating more excitement for the crowd.

Robb Muzzy Racing also had competitive success with their S&S powered NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle.  In the first round of eliminations they ran a 7.08 at 188 mph and went on to set a new AHDRA national record of 7.065 at 188.28 mph to win the AHDRA Pro Gas class.  Racer Ryan Schnitz out-performed Tom Bradford, James Kelly, and Mike Lozano during eliminations to take the win.

"We are very pleased with the performance of our power plants on this opening weekend of AHDRA racing," said S&S Race Relations Manager, Charlie Hadayia .  "The racers are very excited about the new S&S 124" Challenge Class and seeing the consistency and performance of the Pro Stock Motorcycles is very encouragin...these NHRA V-Twin Pro Stock bikes are able to compete in the AHDRA Pro Gas Class, "continued Hadayia. "Our relationship with G2 is providing a great avenue for racers to become more competitive and we're looking forward to another great year of racing."

Re: S&S Cycle-124" engine receives TUV ap
« Reply #13 on: March 23, 2005, 06:17:20 PM »

S&S Cycle's 124" engine receives TUV approval.

GERMANY (March 21, 2005) S&S Cycle announces TUV approval for its popular 124" high performance V-Twin engine.  Addressing the strict guidelines regarding emission standards for the European Community, this engine has met the required criteria for EC regulations of emission (2002/51EC) and also passed the current noise limits (97/24EC Chapter 9) testing.  The results of the testing on the S&S 124" engine were in accordance to the strict requirements for TUV and testing of other S&S engines is expected to take place in the near future.

This is another important step for S&S to efficiently deliver products in the European community without having to rely exclusively on the verification or certification of other dealers and distributors.  These stringent TUV guidelines help establish standards for safety and quality for a variety of products sold in the European community, including Proven Performance S&S products.

On December 20, 2004, S&S received TUV verification for its Quality Management System of their facilities which produce complete assembled engines and frames, among other things.  This verification was approved following a detailed audit performed (#20662508) at the S&S facilities in Viola and La Crosse , Wisconsin .  At that time, engineering consultant Dieter Schleier had the following comment, "S&S Cycle's quality systems are above average and currently exceed the normal requirements to receive verification from TUV."

"It was fitting that I received news of gaining TUV approval of our 124" engine while I was visiting customers in Europe ," said S&S President, Brett Smith.  "We know that this approval is critical for our expanding business opportunities in the European Community.  With our Quality Management Systems having received verification, along with today's news about the 124" engine, we are definitely making a commitment to serving our European customers,"continued Smith.  "Once again, I applaud our product development and manufacturing teams for their continued innovation and exceptional level of quality," concluded Smith.

In 2004, S&S designed the 124 VFI Shootout to promote their popular 124" engine.  The results of that year-long campaign/tour have clearly displayed the reliability and performance of this engine.  In addition to the success of the tour, S&S has teamed up with the AHDRA to create the S&S 124" Challenge Class starting in the 2005 AHDRA racing season.  This grass-roots AHDRA racing class will allow racers to enter the world of competitive motorcycle drag racing with a stock S&S 124" engine.  For more information visit the AHDRA web site at http://www.ahdra.com/rulesssc.html .

Re: S&S Cycle responds to Harley-Davidson laws
« Reply #14 on: March 24, 2005, 04:34:55 PM »

VIOLA, WI (March 24, 2005) S&S Cycle was recently named in a lawsuit brought by Harley-Davidson concerning alleged infringement of several Harley-Davidson patents and trademarks.  The lawsuit was brought in Federal Court in the Eastern District of Wisconsin.  Delkron, Inc. was also named as a defendant in this lawsuit.  The patent infringement portion of the lawsuit is aimed at certain twin-cam engine parts that S&S is marketing.  Harley-Davidson did not name any S&S customers as defendants.

S&S has reviewed the issues raised in Harley-Davidson's complaint and believes they are without legal basis.  S&S respects the intellectual property rights of others and the S&S products at issue in this lawsuit were the result of S&S's own engineering designs.  S&S does not have any connection to Delkron in this action and does not believe that Harley-Davidson had any basis to name them and Delkron in the same lawsuit.

While S&S would obviously prefer never to become involved in these kinds of disputes, they understand that as they continue to grow, there is always a possibility that they will become the target of lawsuits.

"It is a great disappointment that Harley-Davidson is taking legal action against us," said S&S President, Brett Smith.  "My grandfather, George Smith, helped found the V-Twin performance aftermarket industry in the mid-1950s and assisted Harley-Davidson with their Bonneville record run in 1970.  We have always felt that a mutually beneficial relationship existed between S&S and Harley-Davidson; our 145-Tribute project in 2003 is evidence of that-100 years for Harley-Davidson and 45 years for S&S and the performance aftermarket."  Smith went on to say, "We do not understand why after all this time Harley-Davidson is raising these claims.  Whatever the reason, this lawsuit will not affect our continued commitment to be the premier provider of Proven Performance components to the V-Twin aftermarket."
