Tragedy
« on: April 08, 2012, 01:43:37 PM »

I just waved at them not more than 10 minutes before this happen.  They were members of the HOG group that I am a member of.  I'm pasting the article since the NEWS Journal is now a subscription service and i'm not sure if you could read it.

Newark, DE Apr 7, 2012

A Newark woman died following a motorcycle crash on Kirkwood Highway (Del. 2) at Woodhaven Drive, Milltown, that also left a second person injured.

Delaware State Police said Joanne Barber, 67, of Newark, was a passenger on a 2008 Harley Davidson operated by William F. Barber, 67, also of Newark shortly before 10 a.m.

Georganna E. Pragg, 75, of Wilmington, was driving a 2002 Buick Century north on Woodhaven Drive and was trying to turn east onto Del. 2. Pragg failed to see the motorcycle, causing the motorcycle to strike the car on the back driver’s side, police said.

Joanne Barber was ejected from the motorcycle and landed in the road. She was admitted to Christiana Hospital in critical condition, and state police reported shortly after 7 p.m. that she had died of her injuries.

William Barber stayed with the motorcycle after impact, police said. He was transported to Christiana Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Pragg was not injured.

The road was closed for more than an hour following the crash. The investigation is continuing, state police said.

Very sad news! Happening way to often. The fact that the cage driver was 75 years old makes me question her alertness and vision.

Why we don't require an annual drivers test for everyone over 60 is strange to me. Way to many people out there that should not be driving because they are to darn old to. As a pilot I do bi- annual checks since I was in my twenties.

That's too bad, sorry for your loss.

I'm trying to read the police comments and get an idea of the relative location of the bike and car.

The car was going north, 12:00.  She was trying to turn east, 3:00.  To me that's a right hand turn.

If she was turning west in front of them, 9:00, that would cause them to hit her, but not from the rear and on the driver's side.  But it says turning east, not west.

What am I missing?

Vehicle entered highway from cyclist left.Attempted a right hand turn and would have been traveling in the same direction as the bike. Happened on a three lane ( each direction ) highway. Bad deal.      JoeS

When they wait until the last moment and dart out in front of you, I don't care how old or young you are you're gonna nail 'em as I did last May.  I was just lucky to survive and this rider's passenger didn't.  It's bad and there is no one thing that is consistantly to blame.  Note that the riders were well over 60 years of age.  It happens so fast that regardless of your defensive riding skills, you're toast.  :( spyder

I have to agree with Spyder, as we get older, we need to really need to get tested as to vision & reaction times.
So sad to have this happen to the operator and to loose his wife.
