Travis airman killed in Napa County crash

LAKE BERRYESSA —
A Travis Air Force Base airman was killed when his motorcycle collided with a van allegedly driven by a drunken driver near Lake Berryessa on Sunday afternoon, a California Highway Patrol officer said. Napa County sheriff's Capt. Tracey Stuart identified the crash victim as 42-year-old Sgt. David Robert Fernandez.

Fernandez and Michael Manalo, 31, of Fairfield, were riding their Yamaha motorcycles east on state Highway 128 east of Wragg Canyon Road when the crash happened around 12:45 p.m., CHP Officer Jaret Paulson said. Both motorcyclists were passing traffic as they approached a 1997 Chevrolet van that was being driven east on the highway by Austin Meade, 28, of Oakland, Paulson said.

Meade turned left toward the road's north shoulder in front of the bikers and the motorcycles broadsided the van, Paulson said. Fernandez was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:40 p.m. Stuart said. Manalo suffered moderate injuries and was taken by ambulance to the Queen of the Valley Medical Center, Paulson said.
Meade was not injured and was booked into Napa County Jail on suspicion of DUI, Paulson said.

ANOTHER senseless accident!!! :soapbox:

Let me guess:  A)  He didn't see the motorcycles with their headlights on "for safety", B) The sun, at 1:40 PM, was directly in his eyes, so he couldn't see the motorcycles, C) He couldn't see the motorcycles 'cause his head was up his but, but not likely, uh-huh, or D) All of the above, or DumAss!  WTF?

Very Sad, he had a whole life ahead of him to have taken away in a split second! should treat it the same as pulling a trigger when drivers are drunk!

I don't get it.  There is no reason for anybody to drive drunk now or ever.  But now days, there are all types of services available (most of them free) to get you home without putting everyone's life in danger.  This young Sgt. probably fought and was in the line of fire many times.  It took some idiot at home with what is the equivalent of a two ton bullet.  What's bad is this guy (Austin Meade) will probably be released soon and back on the road, drunk again... >:(

Absofrickenlutely! Manslaughter and do the full term; not just a slap on the wrist. The courts need to send a message to the driving public that driving while drunk will not be tolerated! Condolences to the deceased man's family!!

Campers, when you're done posting here, fire off a copy to your local legislators.  When they're done getting pissed off at all the messages they get, hopefully, perhaps they'll pull their heads out of their duffel bags and do something about this problem...although I gotta think it'll not happen in my life time.  Ever the eternal optimist that I am, right?

Just had a taxi driver hit and killed by a 23 year old drunk that had his license suspended 10 days ago for drunk driving. Taking the license don't keep em off the road but jail does.  :nixweiss:
