Sad news.

One of our own 1shrprdkng (hope I spelled that right) was in an accident on the way to Ribfest.
Arland and Vicki Sharp are at Vanderbuilt Hospital in Nashville. Vicki and Arland have both had surgery and Vicki is doing Ok and Arland is in critical condition. Vicki is in room 10206. I talked with Vicki this afternoon and she said they both needed our prayers.

From what I can gather on the news report, the accident happened Tuesday afternoon at the intersection of Hwy 68 and Lakota Rd in Trigg County, Ky.  Basically in Cadiz, KY.

From last reports, they are in stable condition (according to the local papers).

Here is a link to the local news media report and a photo of the scene:

They are in a great hospital, so are getting the best possible care.  Thoughts and prayers for both of them...

Janet and I went to see Vicki this morning at Vanderbilt. She's doing OK considering what she's been through.  She broke her right foot and ankle and left pelvis and hip. Arland is still in intensive care and we didn't see him. After surgeries to repair the accident damage, he had a heart attack in the hospital. Vickie said the doctors found three blockages. As I remember, Vickie said Arland crushed one of his feet and broke his ankle. Not sure if he had other injuries. Vickie said they would be transporting her to a hospital near her home in Chattanooga Monday or Tuesday and that Arland would follow as soon as he was able.

Vickie told us that they rode up to Barkley Lodge Tuesday, checked into their room and then went to town to get snacks for the room. A truck stopped in front of them and Arland didn't see it in time to react. She said she remained conscious throughout the accident and remembers rolling down the road.

I talked to JR a little while ago and a group from Ribfest were heading to the hospital so they'll probably get more details.

If I get any more info I'll be sure to post it here.

Just spoke to John (JR) and he and several others went to visit both Arland and Vickie this morning.  We were not able to go with that group as we had another commitment after leaving Rib Fest but we did make it to Nashville about 3 pm and were able to visit with both Arland and Vickie then.  What Joe Vibe reported is pretty much what I understand also.  In spite of broken bones, road rash and in Arland's case heart problems they both seem to be doing pretty well all things considered.  As bad as it is it could always have been worse.  So keep those prayers coming and Godspeed to Arland and Vickie for a complete recovery. :2vrolijk_21:

As Jerry mentioned, several of us rode over from the lodge to see Arland and Vicki. All things considered they both seemed to be in good spirits. They both will have a long recovery and rehabilitation/physical therapy. Vicki said the doc said it will be about 3 months before she will be able to walk as she has injuries to both legs.

Annette and I will continue to pray for their quick and complete recovery.

I've put them both along with their family on a couple prayer lists. May God watch over them along with the doctors and nurses as they begin this road to recovery.

For those that believe knows God works in mysterious ways what better place could Arland have been in to have had a heart attack and doctors find 3 blockages, i have had a lot of strange stuff happen  with my sickness this past winter you had better believe that they are angels and prayers.

For those that believe knows God works in mysterious ways what better place could Arland have been in to have had a heart attack and doctors find 3 blockages, i have had a lot of strange stuff happen  with my sickness this past winter you had better believe that they are angels and prayers.

I spoke with Vickie today and she sounded so much better and felt much better (Power of Prayer). I let her know how everyone is praying for them and some are adding them to their Church prayer list. I believe in the power of prayer and firmly believe it is the reason she is feeling much better. Goes for Arland too. He is doing much better and has been moved to a room. Sounded great compared to Saturday and believe he has a better sense of who he is talking too since then. Vickie will probably be moved to Chattanooga tomorrow. Arland was moved to room 7031 until at least the 22nd which is when he will have his surgery on his foot. They waiting on swelling to go down. You can send him a card or gifts but he asked that for now, NO phone calls except from me. So if any messages or questions, send me a PM and I will get the message to him or answer anything I can. He can't remember anything from the wreck but Aland and Vickie both think he may have had a heart attack which caused the wreck. Arland and Vickie both expressed how grateful they are to have everyone's concerns and prayers. I told him when I call I will be asking for specific prayer needs so we can be specific in our petitions to the throne of grace! ;) I just praise God for His provisions in this horrific wreck and how the wonderful people of this site responded to show our Love! Awesome! Thanks, please continue praying and God Bless!

I'm so sorry to hear of Arland &Vickie's accident. As with most of us in the biker community, it saddens us to hear of "one of our own" going down. My prayers are with them, as I will add them to a several prayer lists. It does make one feel warm at the response by the people on this web site & the ones who visited them. I'm glad to be a part of this site.
GOD BLESS all.   RIDE SAFE

Just Got off the phone with Arland and he confirmed the doctors are planning to do surgery on his foot the 22nd of May so lets be praying in advance that all goes well there with no complications. Arland said he believes Vickie is being sent to a hospital in Chattanooga because he hasn't been able to talk with her today so be in prayer for her. Arland said he had a rough night last night but is doing better today. Hard to sleep in a hospital when they keep coming in and checking on ya! Asked him if he had any chest pain from the bypass and he said he really hasn't but his foot is painful. Being his foot is messed up he hasn't been able to get up and around like they usually do after surgery. He is on a light pain medication. Be in prayer about the insurance co. There not wanting to pay for certain procedures with surgery's. It's almost a full time job dealing with the insurance at times and with both Vickie and Arland down it is difficult for them. I let him know he is loved and was able to pray with him today. Praise God for Joevibe who is able to visit and talk with Arland since he lives in Nashville area. That's it for now, love ya'll, God Bless!

Thanks for the update, JR.  Talked to Joe a bit earlier (actually PM).  Told him and will tell you to please pass along to Arland and Vicki that if there is ANYTHING they need for us local folks to do for them, please do not hesitate to let us know.  I'm about 2 hours from Nashville and Chattanooga so can be at either location at the drop of a hat.  Prayer goes without saying but please let them know there are quite a few forum members and others that have them on a prayer list.  God is good, His healing power is unlimited and His love is all around us.  Praise Him for what he is doing and going to do in this time of need.

Just saw this thread.  Please pass along my best JR.  Sounds like your making yeoman efforts to help out.  Good on ya buddy.

Hope the recoveries continue.  As much fun and as special as the Gatherings are we have riders down sometimes.  Have worked a couple of those accidents myself and been there after a few others.  Sometimes short of just not being there it's absolutely unavoidable.  But let's all be careful out there friends.  Nobody watches for us better than us.

Most hospitals have a "patient's advocate" who can help deal with patient issues including insurance company hurdles...  If Arland and Vicki have any family with them, perhaps they could see if the hospital they are in has this service.  If they are without family, maybe a local site member could look into it?

Not getting the best possible medical treatment because of insurance complications is unconscionable..

I will ask Arland about that tomorrow. I was just relaying what Arland said in our phone call. Thanks man, God Bless! :2vrolijk_21:

You are so right, Scott.

I think I read that Arland is at Vanderbilt University Hospital.  I worked for The University of Alabama at Birmingham for over 20 years and know for sure that they had patient's "case workers" who assisted with the social and business needs of the patient and worked with their family members as well.  I would be very surprised if Vandy did not have similar services.  Certainly something worth checking into.

Insurance companies piss me off...it seems they often feel that their job is to deny first, until forced to do what is the right thing, and often what they know they will have to do in the long run.  But it often takes some prodding, which just adds to the stress the patient and family is already facing.

JR...as always, you are an exceptional human being in both actions and words.  You're the real deal, bro... :2vrolijk_21:

Hey Ya'll, just got off the phone with Arland. Told him I tried to call Vickie and see if she got settled in the rehab close to their home and couldn't reach her on the number she gave me. He said he was waiting on her to call him any minute so I didn't talk with him that long. Arland said he will be transported to the same rehab she is at tomorrow. I asked him about his operation scheduled for the 22nd and he said he will have that done at home. I asked him about the insurance problems and if he spoke with an advocate with the hospital and he said he did and got things straightened out. Praise God for answered prayer. Arvin said he has a good support group to care for them when he gets home. Another praise! I asked Arland if he could have Vickie give me a call at her convenience since I don't have the number or room where she is at and won't be able to contact them once he is moved. He said he would. Let him know all of us here are praying for him and are willing to help them in any way possible and to just let us know any needs. He sounded very grateful. My heart is filled with joy to see the pouring of love from the people of this site and the willingness to help a Brother and Sister in need. Ya'll are awesome and may God pour His blessings out on each and every one of you! Love ya'll, God Bless!

You're a good man, JR.  Mungam wondered if they had anything still at the Barkley lodge. The assumption was made that someone would have thought about that but I haven't heard mention of it so that makes it worth addressing.

All the very best from here in Perth for a speedy recovery... is better news as I read through the posts.
We don't have the same health insurance hassles and challenges you guys have in your neck of the woods, but you do have a great biker community spirit, that's for sure... I agree with "lets all be careful out there friends"

Hey Jim! :drink:

Great question! I thought I had addressed that in one of my posts but very possible I forgot. ::) Yes they have had their stuff picked up. Vicki's Son went to Lake Barkley and picked up everything. I believe that was on Wed and was surprised no one from Lake Barkly mentioned anything to us or ask how our friend is doing! :nixweiss: Anyway it was taken care of, thanks for asking!

Thanks for the update JR.

The good Lord will/is hearing our prayers for Arlanr & Vicki for they are his sparrows.

                                                   There's never a teardrop
                                                      that God doesn't see.

                                                  He knows when a sparrow
                                                        falls from a tree.

                                                    There's never a moment
                                                     when God doesn't care.

                                                          Never a time
when he won't hear our prayer.

In saying that,..Arland & Vicki you have NO choice but to get well.

In the early 90's my son had a bicycle accident and was lifelined to Vanderbuilt hospital was there 2 weeks and they had paitent and family advocates then. Great people to work with son recovered and the total hospital bill to me including lifeline helicopter was 4 dollars and my insurance was not that good but the people there were!!!

Hey Everyone! :drink:

Got the message below from Vickie this morning. I will be praying for the Doctors along with Arland and Vickie. I am so happy they are in the same room! I have seen those who have had to go thru long rehabilitations go thru depression so I will be praying about that too. Hopefully since they are roomy's it will help in all area's for a faster recovery! Thanks for praying and your Love!

Yes, we are finally together! Kind of shocks the nurses when they realize we sharing the same room. Apparently they don't see it that often. Arland has an appointment with the ortho doc tomorrow. By the way, he also has a broken nose and cheek bone. we are doin as well as can be expected. Be sure to thank everyone for their continued thoughts and prayers.

Just read all the posts and as a newbie who hasn't met any of you yet I just have to say there are some mighty fine people in this group. After riding metrics since I was a kid I finally bought our first Harley a couple of years ago and even though I like the history and rumble of a Harley, it is the fellow riders I've met that make me most thankful we took the plunge.

So sorry for the misfortune but was thankful the reports kept getting better and better with each update.

I too will remember Arland and Vickie in my thoughts and prayers as they continue on the road to recovery.

WooHoo! :huepfenjump3:

Just received a message from Vickie on facebook. Also got both their phone numbers so I can keep connected to there needs and will keep you posted. Here is where they are  if you want to send any cards.

Vickies message: I don't know why the telephone number is not working. We have moved to another room and that may be why. We are sharing room 140 at health south in Chattanooga.  During the week we are at therapy until about 4. Weekends are not as bad. Please keep everyone posted and those good ole cvo prayers coming. Arland is still waiting for surgery on his foot. Goes to the Dr Tuesday. :2vrolijk_21:

Hey Ya'll! :drink:

Just got a message from Vickie on facebook.

Arland is with me now at my mom's house. It is good to be together again. He will not be able to put any weight on his right foot for at least 2 months. Hopefully he will feel like getting on the site soon and can keep everyone updated. We have not gotten replacement cell phones yet. We are now playing the waiting game and just trying to mend. Thanks for your continued prayers and concerns. I will try to keep in touch!

I'm happy Vickie and Arland are together again and told them to let us know if they need anything. Please continue to pray for them daily and ask God to continue to heal thier bodys with no complications. Love ya'll, God Bless! :2vrolijk_21:

Morning All and Happy Fathers Day! :drink:

Just want to give you an update on Arland and Vickie. I talked with Arland Friday before I caught a flight to Arizona. Arland and Vickie are at Vickies Moms and are together again. I asked Arland how his chest was and he said it's doing good but still sore at times. He said that his bypass surgery was probably the best thing that happened to him in this whole event. We both agree it was probably what caused the crash. Arland has 5 pins in his right leg. Three in his ankle and two in his shin. He can't put any pressure on that leg for 2 months. I asked about Vickies hip and he said they both are healing and limited to the bed. He appreciates everyones prayers and asks for continued prayer as they heal. Specifically that there is no complications in there healing process. It was a Joy to hear Arlands voice and being able to pray with him. Asked God for His healing hand on both of them and to continue to give them peace, comfort and wisdom in the days ahead. Arland has been on the site and I told him about this thread. Thanks again everyone for your love and prayers for Arland and Vickie! God Bless! :2vrolijk_21:

I agree and I'm not local.  From the west coast, Terrie and I agree.  I know there's several other Californians that feel the same way, too. :2vrolijk_21:

And prayers for Arland and Vickie.  I don't know them but I can sure relate to what they've gone through and are going through.  It sure brought back memories and I remain greatful that I can even walk again, unassisted.  I pray for the same for both of them....to be able to walk unassited and pain free! :2vrolijk_21:

Spoke with  Arland and Vickie today to wish them a happy 4th of July and see what prayer needs they have today. Vickie is having a tough day today with pain. She said it is raining there today and that doesn't help. She goes in the 31st of July to see how everything is going and see if she can start moving. Arland said he got 2 pins out of his foot and has 3 left in there for now. Doctor said it's healing fine and he is scheduled for the 16th of July to have the other 3 pins removed. He said his taste buds are screwed up. Everything is magnified, salt taste really salty, barbecue sauce is magnified and so on. He said he is having a hard time getting his appetite. Doctor said he was put under a lot and could be cause. Asked Arland if Doc said it will go away and he said he will ask him next time he see's him. Also need to be praying for his short term and long term pay starts coming in. He said he talked to them this week and hopes he got it taken care of. They both said they appreciate everyone's prayers and to please keep them coming! Love ya'll and thank you for your love and prayers, God Bless and Happy 4th of July to everyone! :2vrolijk_21:

Hey All! Straight from the horses mouth. Thanks everyone for all the great posts with prayers and well wishes. You are right PG1 that was a lot better day and a great MV GTG. We will miss seeing everyone at MV this year. We canceled our room just the other day. We was wanting to be able to walk well enough to bring the cage to MV and visit with all our friends and meet some new ones but we are not well enough. Vickie is just starting to walk again with a big boot and a walker but she can't go very far without resting. The ortho Doc last week said he always has 12 week no weight bearing when the foot is damaged as bad as mine was. I was happy my foot was still in my boot and would have hated to have seen what it looked like if I had not been wearing my heavy boots. I had several sessions in the Erlanger Hospital hyperbaric chamber that really helped heal the sores on my foot and the road rash on both elbows. I go to ortho on Sept 17, to evaluate if I can start putting weight on my right foot. Vickies Mom is doing a great job taking care of us both. I got most of my appetite back, her mom makes the best gravy and biscuits ever. I ate ketchup on some fries for the first time since May 7th. We still have a long road ahead but we are getting better almost every day thanks to all of your love and support. I hope to be online more in the future and look forward to seeing everybody soon.                     Arland

Thanks. We are hanging in. The healing time for both of us has been a lot slower than we had hoped. Vickie is learning to walk again and is enduring a lot of pain from her hip that was broken. I am still about three weeks from finding out if I can start putting weight on my right foot. We will miss seeing you all in MV.

Keeping you and Vickie in my prayers. Don't push things to much, but do what the doctors and therapists say. everything will come together and there will be another MV next year.

Dear Arland and Vickie,
I have been pretty much out of touch with this site this year with a whole slew of personal challenges, but things have calmed down and just a few weeks ago was able to fit in this years GTG at MV. I am really excited to be able to spend some quality time with the great folks I have met previously at this event, especially the both of you. So as I was going through the past posts trying to catch up with CVOHARLEY, I was shocked and saddened to read about your accident. Praise the Good Lord that you both survived and are on your way to recovery.Wow!!
Never too late to send some prayers your way, and you're added to my daily list. As MIKEYTEE says, things WILL come together.
Hang in there and lets ride together again to Chimney Rock, next year!!
