Question For You Glare Experts?
« on: March 26, 2008, 04:28:34 PM »

OK, I got a hair up my ass to polish the bike. It's clean, it's warm enough, and it's gonna rain. So I figure I might as well get it done now.

Question. I have Glare Spider and Glare Micro-Finish. Do I need to use both? The bike has been polished in the past only by dealer or private detail places. Not the best jobs done there. And you know I'm not to motivated to do this very often. What's the best thing I can do to it with these (or any additional) products?

I wanna be free to RIDE, not polish, my machine....! :D :D :D

TIA gang! OK Let me have it! ::) ;D

All b.s. aside, you need to put some elbow grease into the 1st application, Howie, to get the true Glare results.  Follow the directions exactly by applying small amounts and rubbing it completely into the paint until it disappears.  This takes quite a bit of time and effort just to do one scooter.  The 2nd coat is applied and removed as you have always done wax......apply it, and rub it off.  And all future applications are easy also.  But ea. one makes the dark colors look liquid.  My guess is you may actually get into how good the results are and find that it's actually 'worth it' ~  har!  spyder

Howie, Spyder's right on with the application technique, however, you didn't mention having the Professional Polish. :nixweiss:  You want to use that as the second (final) coat that Spyder talks about.  As far as the differences between MF and Spider, MF is a little more aggressive than Spider, but not much.  If the paint is looking the least bit scratchy, you may actually want to use MF first, then Spider, then Prof. Polish.  I flip-flop between using MF and Spider, just depending what mood I'm in . . . . both give good results.  Ken's right, though, in that the longer you leave each coat on, the better the results.  And each application will improve the look, too.  I've done the SERG about 5, maybe 6, times now and each time it comes out looking better and better.  It's absolutely ridiculous how that stuff revives neglected paint! :shocked2:

OK buddy boy. Micro Finish if you have scratches to remove. Spider for swirl marks. Polish is the last step. It all ends with the polish ans begins depending on the quality of the finish.

Is that better than my first reply?

Haven't seen this question before, so here goes:  Is Glare a hand apply only material, or can you use an orbital buffer for application and removal?  I've found that the best way to eliminate fine scratches and swirls is with an orbital buffer and foam pad.  Also makes the entire process much easier on worn out fingers and elbows.

Yes, Jerry, you can use a buffer.  As a matter of fact, I think Glare offers buffer pads, etc.  Of course, nothing like the old fashioned hand in a old T-shirt for application.........some habits are hard to break.  ::) har!  spyder

Oops! I just found a third bottle called Professional Polish. I did the Spider. That was easy to work in. Then I did the Micro-Finish. That was a bitch to work in and get the film off. Then I thought I was done. Came inside to put those 2 away and saw the third bottle! Chit, I guess I have one more step to do. Not today. Getting dark now. Oh well, 2 out of 3 ain't bad. :nixweiss: :D

Jerry, right on about the orbital buffer, and yes, you can apply Glare with one.  That's the way I do the four-wheeled vehicles, but my buffer is too large to work well on the bikes, so I hand apply it on those.  The one caution I'd give you about using it with a buffer is to tape off any black, textured plastic beforehand since you don't have quite the control with it that you do by hand and once the Professional Polish dries on anything made of that material . . . it ain't comin' off! :o :-\  MF comes off no problem, Spider does too with some elbow grease, but NOT the Pro Polish.

You got it a bit backwards there pal. The Micro finish is more abrasive than the Spider. Coarse to fine is Micro finish - Spider - Professional Polish. ;)

Well, I guess it don't matter now, especially if you have to finish it off with the Pro Polish anyway. Dayum, I thought it looked pretty good already! ;D ;D ;D

The only one of the three that I rubbed in completely was the Pro Polish.  Like Chief said, I use Spider for swirls and MF for scratches.  It doesn't get used often......but it does work good on saddlebag lids where Renea's fringed chaps beat the chit out of the fronts of the lids.  If I use Spider or MF, then Pro Polish gets rubbed in completely followed by a traditional application.  For maintenance I use Brite Max 6S or Honda Spray.  On the road.........Honda Spray.  That stuff rocks!!   :2vrolijk_21:

Howie...like the others have said, the final application, after you've gotten all the scratches and swirl marks off, is one of the most critical.  Rub that light first coat in well...unitl it all but disappears, then the second coat...let it dry well, then buff it off with a clean microfiber or two.  Use it on chrome...all shiney parts...even the windshield.  You will not be dissappointed with the final result, and from this point forward, it'll be easier to just touch up the parts that need it.  The stuff really is different than anything else I've ever used, and I've had solid black gelcoated bass boats that I tried everything on...this chit beats them all   :2vrolijk_21:

Thanks Terry. I did the Pro Polish exactly as you, spyder, and Brian said. That first coat was a bitch. That chit just doesn't want to rub in. Maybe it was the 2 previous coats I did yesterday. But eventually, I was able to rub in the first coat. Then I put on the 2nd coat, let it dry up, and polished it off. I gotta admit, it leaves a beautiful finish. But 4 coats and 6 hours is a bit much. And that was just the painted parts. Never touched the chrome or anything else yet. If the pro-polishing maintenance on it is easier now, I guess it was worth it. I imagine you don't need 2 coats on the chrome. Just wax on wax off?

Thanks for the help. When it stops raining, I'll try to get some pics. After all, ya'll will probably never see this bike so clean again!!! :D :D :D

Yea, Howie...after this first application, all you'll need to do is touch ups, and do what amounts to the second application to keep things looking good.  On the chrome pieces, just put the pro polish on if there's no swirls or scratches on the pipes.  That will do...

Not enough to do 2 coats and rub the first one in thoroughly! Not on all that chrome. Yep, no swirls or scratches on the chrome at all! ::) ;D ;D ;D

Wax on, wax off the chrome! ;)

Any prep required for the Glare?

Tracking on the Spider Polish and the other "preps" to the Professional, but do you need to dewax the finish or anything to make it more effective?

No need to de-wax as with some other polishes I've read about, but you may want to use a clay bar first to remove any contaminants stuck on the paint or chrome surface.  Mother's makes a decent clay bar that is easily found at retail outlets and it comes with their spray detailer which is both used as a lubricant for the clay bar and is also great for quick touch-ups on top of the Glare.

And, Brian, doesn't Glare have the same thing?  That way, you'd hope that the chemicals would at least be compatible.   :-\spyder

Spyder, you talkin' about a quick detailer?  The closest thing Glare has to that is the Sahara, but to me, it's more like a spray wax, when it comes to how you have to apply and remove it, than a detailer.

I've used quite a few of the popular quick detailers on top of a Glared finish and they all seem to work as good or better than they did with some of the other waxes and polishes I'd been using before Glare.  Only difference is the great Glare shine that's left afterward now!

Have a look at Crystal-glo.com This is GREAT polish for hiding any imperfections in the paint from cleaning and general use. The starter kit is pricey but you get what you pay for. I used it for two years but now I use "ICE detailer" and it seems to work just as well. The new polishes on the market are gearing towards the acrylic end of the shine world. I like a product that will clean everything and leave NO residue, period. ICE leaves no residue, the only precautions are not to apply to glass. I hope this helps you as it has helped me. You see I have a disease called Lupus and my body is attacking itself and eating my joints as I write this so I need easy on easy off and perfect results. This is MHO!

That's the correct order.  You might find you don't really need the Micro Finish once you get done with the Spider.  I rarely use both (usually just the Micro Finish), unless maybe I'm trying to get a scratch out, or it's the first time I'm going over something.  Similarly, I doubt you need the Knock Out on a clear-coated vehicle that's been taken care of.  In other words, I don't like to get aggressive unless it's necessary.

Well this will be the first time I am using it so, do I use the knockout or the spider? Or test and make my own decision?

Paint is in good shape and I am not looking to take anything off...

Dick

I'd try the spider first. If that doesn't get the swirls, then I'd try the Knock Out. I rarely use the KO.

Pretty sure you'd be fine starting with the Spider.  I've never started with Knock Out on anything.  Not gonna hurt anything to give it a spin and see what kind of results you get, though.  But after this initial application, whichever route you go, maintenance can probably be done with just Micro and Polish.
