Engine Wear/ Best Oil ?
« on: May 16, 2019, 10:10:40 PM »

2015 CVO RG w/117 kit- after 22k   ( 15k on the 117 upgrade) the crank bearing failed. When the engine was taken down there was visible wear on the piston wrist pins, cylinders were slightly scored and the S&S lifters had beginning signs of galling on the rollers. Since I change oil in-between the HD dealership 5k services to say the least I was very disappointed not to mention my extended warranty did not cover all the repairs.
I had been using HD SYN3 but now considering Mobile V Twin or Amsoil of which I have used both on previous bikes but frankly could not perceive any difference.

I am looking for input.

Wow that sucks man, hopefully they figure out the root cause. I doubt it was the oil BUT, I use Mobile 1 V Twin 20-50 and Redline Heavy Shockproof in the tranny. The Mobile 1 I've been using in my vehicles for years and even the V Twin is readily available at most major auto supply stores and a lot of them even carry K&N 171 oil filters for our bikes.

Good Luck

X2. Walmart is the cheapest I have found the M1. Amazon for RL and filter.

SYN 3 is an above average motor oil, and I seriously doubt it caused or contributed to the wear you saw.  Harley has lots of issues they've created with poor design choices and cheapening of the product.  For instance, lifter roller failures have been all to common on TC110 engines, no matter what brand of oil is used and at low mileage (10-20k).  As for the cylinder scoring and wrist pin wear, once again people have seen those issues no matter what brand of motor oil they use.

If you are running the stock cams and valve springs, I'd suggest you add an inspect/replace item for the lifters to your maintenance schedule at 10k intervals.  Read some of the many threads about lifter roller failures on this and other forums.

There is an old term here in the UK, "Jack of all trades, Master of none",  that in my opinion is HD Syn 3, I remember years ago asking my HD dealer if I could use a friction reducer in the HD mineral oil that my bike used at the time and was told "No, if you do that, the rollers in the crank bearings will not roll but slide" my answer was well if there is no friction, whats the difference,  he did`nt have an answer for that.

Also why would you put the same oil in all 3 holes, if you get leak you have no idea where to start looking!

I agree with a previous reply, its unlikely the oil caused the problems, but it certainly did not help.

Hope the damage is not too serious and you get back on the road ASAP.

Your oil is not at fault however there are better choices. The issues you mention are seen by many others with 110 engines. Not saying normal just that these occur frequently. When a 110 is rebuilt from the ground up all can be addressed with some OEM and aftermarket parts plus improved tolerances.

Any votes for Spectro?  I tried the Harley Syn 3 just in the engine and I never liked it.  Good results with Spectro and Mobil 1 Synthetic.  Hope you get everything sorted out ....

First oil change at 500 klms I changed to,
Engine oil, Mobile 1 V Twin
Transmission, Spectro Heavy Duty Platinum 6 Speed Transmission oil (made gear change smoother and finding neutral better).
Primary, Spectro Primary Chaincase oil.

Oh boy, another oil thread.

They're all good, Mobile 1 V Twin is a good choice, but all the synthetics are very good.

Roller frosting is generally not a oil problem anyway. That's a quality issue. S&S lifters
or Johnson would be my choice.

We have met the Minimum Monthly Requirement (MMR) for motorcycle oil threads.  June is considered a vacation month, therefore the MMR is lower for June.
