Title: My Crimson Breakout now she's broken!
Post by: Bretto on March 25, 2013, 09:53:02 AM
Well after a very long wait (Almost eight months!) my Breakout has arrived!  We got the call this morning saying it was here.  So we headed into the Dealer ASAP!

The boys had been busy as it was on the bike lift and had just been run prior to us getting there.

The boys didn't have enough time to finish the pre-delivery and clean the bike before I was due to head out to work. I work 4 1/2 hours from home. So I still haven't riden it yet and seeing as I dont get home until Friday which is a Holiday, they are dropping it off at home on Thursday. So the next 4 Nightshifts are going to be the longest in history!

Only one word can describe this bike!  "WOW!"

I am generally not a connoisseur of red, but the Breakout looks best in that color, IMO.  Nice bike!  The wait must have been horrible, but well worth it. :2vrolijk_21:

Congratulations, Betto! Enjoy your great bike and drive save forever.

PS: Believe me, I know about what you're talking. Should get mine this week after waiting seven month. :bananarock:
PS2: BTW, the CVO Breakout was announced "only" seven month ago, or did you have some insider order possibilities?  LOL, just kidding

Chrome, you are getting close!

Bretto....wow, you work 4.5 hours from home?  And I thought a 20 minute traffic tie-up for me was bad!

Beautiful bike....now the real work starts....get those reflectors off and for gosh sakes get rid of those two "torpedo tubes" on the right side of the bike :P

nothing like sitting on the new ride for the first time....except riding it for the first time....

Bloody long time to wait anyway.

Have to work away to make the big coin needed to pay for one of these!

Reflectors will fall off over the weekend when I'm home. As for the pipes i'm hoping V&H Softail Big Shots Staggered in Chrome fit.  But they will have to wait until I drop it off on the 10th April for lots of go fast bits.

Yes Yes Can't wait to get back home.  If I wasn't short staffed I would have stayed and riden the bike home once it was ready.

Yea, you are working up there where there are,  what,  ~17 people per 100 square miles or something like that?  Lowest population density in the US I think(Wyoming)

Driving through that state is interesting.  You will see a sign off the state highway that says, " so-and-so Ranch......entrance....27 miles  this way..."     wow....

Hey Bretto,

I assume your riding gear consists of more than you are wearing in the picture   ;D

Although around here, I see dopes all the time wearing less than what you have on(shirtless), and flip flops.....on cruisers......no kidding.....

Definitely a different world up here. Very windy! If you want to ride you have to learn to deal with it. Rode the bike to work last week and got stuck in 30mph wind gusts on the way home. Had to get off of the interstate and take back roads.

Very nice Bretto, what a tease having bike in garage while you are away.
I saw one at the Melbourne Bike expo last year and I like the red, its the best colour on the breakouts.
Oh yeah and have fun cleaning those wheels  :)

Enjoy and ride safe

Ah yes, the wheels.  I have gotten it down to about 15 minutes per wheel to clean them, but yea, it's a chore!

Well after completing a 12 hour Nightshift then a 4 1/2 hour drive home, I've had me 1st ride on the Breakout. WOW this thing is smooth! Loved every minute of it! Doesn't rev like my modified 96 cuber did, but you can really feel the torque from the 110. I'm excited now as it is already booked in for heads, cams, hi comp pistons, V&H Bigshots (hope they fit  ???) and Dyno tuned SERT. This bike is gonna hall a$$!

The bike has been at home since Tuesday, so I recon my partner has awesome self-control as she has been drooling over the Breakout all week just itching to have a ride, but she waited for me to have first ride. Then she didn't wait long after I got home to have her ride!

We both sold our bikes to pay for the Breakout so it is really our bike. Plus having an 11 week old baby really puts a stop to both of us getting out together on two bikes. So instead of having two $20k bikes we now have one $43k CVO!

Hey Dave,

Here's and link to the main Breakout page on the harley website, where they have a gold Breakout.  You can see the mirror...it's very small and mounted low, with a short mounting post that sweeps out to the side...

Well last Wednesday on the start of our holiday we dropped Cherry off at Harbour City HD for some love and attention.  It's 100km from home to Harbour City and in the wee hours of the morning it started bucketing down with rain. By the time we were up it had slowed to a drizzle and seeing as we were heading off for 3 weeks it was now or wait a few months until my next chance to drop off the bike... So I decide to face the rain ???

Well it was one very wet ride and the breakout felt very stable and had heaps of grip. At no time did I feel uncomfortable ( other than being soaked ) riding in the wet. But my heart just about broke once I got off the bike so see the below  :-\

Anyway the boys were going to give her a tub for me but I recon there will be many hours of cleaning to do once I get her home!

Got the call that Cherry is ready to go! The normal softail V&H Big Shot Staggered's fitted without too much trouble at all!  ;D

I'm still away for the next week and a half so will post pics when I can. Plus the motor is strong with it's new internals. Really impressed the builder when he went for a spin. Now just to run it in before putting it on the dyno for some real tuning.

It's so true.  I am 6'6" and thought i would need 3" extensions for the forward controls....nope.  I agree, best ergos of any bike I have ever owned, period...

I agree that the forwards are just perfect in length, I'm only 6'.  It will be interesting to see how much the 16" Apes make to the riding position, doubt I will be able to keep them inline with the rake angle. Will have to push them forwards, which I hope will still look good with the Z bar style.

One ergo I have found awkward is the cruise control switch, feels a long way from the grip.

Well I had planned to pickup my bike today on our way home from a 3 week camping trip as while I was away we had some Go Fast Goodies added. But in the last week I decided to get some Z bar ( Convertible Style) apes fitted hopefully by today. The bars arrived but I have to wait for the extend cables so now I will get the bike next monday when I return from work.

But I did get the boys to send me a pic with the Big Shots fitted!  :2vrolijk_21:

Part number would be the one to suit the standard 2012 softail. Thats what I asked them to order. 12mm O2 sensors.

As for fitting no mods were made to the pipes, but I think one pipe (dont know which one) is turned slightly but still seals up nicely without any leaks.  Will know more next week when I pick Cherry up.

Bretto keep an eye on your fuel gauge as mine ran out with 1/4 tank still left on gauge and also oil leaks on oil lines and gasket s behind external oil lines.

Mine is getting the pipes put on, but they are fixing the same oil leak....there is a fitting and an o ring that they are replacing.

Well after a month at the dealer (only because of my holidays) I have picked up my bike. And just like when I dropped it off it is raining again!

So here are some pics from my phone with the pipes and apes.  Will get some better one after I clean the bike when back home.

The pipes with the SE263 cams sound awesome.  Only running a data logged tune on the SERT for now but once the motor has been run it she will get some serious dyno tuning.

As for power, well it was too wet to get excited with the throttle. But i can't wipe the smile off my face!  ;D

Nice modifications, I like the big shot staggered it matches the look of the bike and the tips rotation makes the pipes look more aggressive

So yesterday I spent many hours cleaning up the bike after 250kms of riding in the damn rain.

Today was spent adding the Sissy Bar and Bags.

I will be complaining about the Backrest pad being a totally different colour compared to the seat and bags.   :-\

And my 1st warranty claim... The LED indicators are a sealed unit so they should never leak apparently.  ???

Bike looks sweeeeet!! :2vrolijk_21:

Regarding the leaking turn signals see where the wire is fed thru that supplies power to them. It has been noticed in the past on some bikes (mine included) that where the wires go through isn't sealed and allows water to enter the assembly. A little clear marine grade silicone around that entry point could eliminate your problem.

Nice bike Brett.....Apes look prime. Relocate them front Blinkers and you have it nailed. Down side to the Apes. Sorry addition i've had on 3 different bikes now. Yeah I know....Once bitten you reackon twice shy. The pricks start moving on these chit roads here in CQ. And once they start moving. Throw them away. Sorry I paid out the $$$$ on this set. Really sorry.

Hey Robo.  Blinker are going to be replaced with LED ones in the mirrors. As for the apes moving you just need to "pin" them in place. Once I'm 100% on there position I will pin them so they wont move at the all bike drags in april.

Basically you drill the bars and risers to take a shear pin instead of just relying on the clamping pressure of the risers.

Not 100% if it will stay or go.  Will give it some time.

Was looking at adding the Daymaker LED Headlamp part #73273-11A but when the stealer quoted me $880 for the light when it's only $400 in the USA. I politely declined.

Well, the new mirror and indicator turned up. I'm happy to have two mirrors again.

The dealer pulled apart my bike, removed the faulty indicator. Then opened the box and the new bloody indicator is BLACK! Right part number just wrong part in box. Found one on the system at another dealer, called them and they opened the box. Guess what it was Black as well! Now I have to wait for HD to sort it out and send the right part! Bike was then put back together and I have drilled a small hole in the underside for the faulty indicator to try and let out some moister for the time being.

Moral = Check the parts first!

Well "Cherry" has been dropped off at the dealers ready for her Dyno tune, then service and some more goodies.  Having the all the chrome cap kit done to cover the crapy bolts and changing the front indicators to some LED ones. But going with something a little different by using the one off the V-rod muscle.

Yep and dont suit CVO Mirror in the fine print. Also with some types it state they are only an accessory and not to be used as the main indicator. Thats way I stayed with HD and I was the parts guys that put me onto the V-rod muscle indicators.

Fits: '03-'13 H-D Original Equipment Tapered, Short-Stem Mirrors. Will not fit stock CVO model mirrors or accessory mirrors.

Post by: Bretto on July 22, 2013, 07:39:57 AM
Picked up Cherry a few days ago after having her dyno'd.  Now this is how they should come from the MoCo!

I asked for a stock dyno run to be done before the engine mods but this never happened.  So the before and after number are with the following mods.  SE pistons 10.5:1, 0.030 gaskets to get comp to 10.8:1, SE263 Cams, SE Pushrods, SERT & V&H Bigshots. Nothing over the top as I need some reliability as I ride 15000kms or more a year.

Blue is the best data logged tune from when the motor was first built. 106hp & 109ft-lbs.

Red is the dyno tune. 110hp & 116ft-lbs. The peak numbers aren't that far apart but look at that torque curve from 3500rpm to 5000rpm.  That's what I love about dyno's, the fine tuning.

The bike rides fantastic, smooth and pulls hard all the way to redline!  :pepper:

Not looking to get into a rwhp war.  More to point out how gains by realtime fine tuning by a competent operator on a dyno is worth every cent.  8)

Just had my breakout dyno tuned stock with Bassani 2-1 and PV tuner. torque curve is flat from 3K to 4.5K at 112TQ. while my HP is somewhat lower I would thing that the TQ number would be the most important. What I've noticed is that most built engines seem to have HP and TQ numbers very similar. my numbers are 96HP and 112TQ. I realize that Dyno numbers vary between different locations but I had a dyno run at a different shop before this tune and without tuning it ran 94 and 110. both runs before tuning were nearly identical even though done at 2 different locations.

Is there a reason that as HP increases TQ increases and somewhat less? in comparison my bike has 14 less HP but only 4 less TQ. Just curious if anyone has an answer?

Mate it all comes down to your cam choice. For me I want to race mine a few times a year but still have reliability. I use the SE263 which gives it power mid to high rpm but also has good part throttle ride-ability.

Last weekend we attended the Benaraby All Bike Drags. We had an awesome weekend with about 160 bikes racing.

My previous PB was 12.4 @ 104mph on my Fatbob last year.  So I was looking to beat that this year on the CVO. It didn't take long as my 1st pass was a 12.1 @ 108mph!  8)  But my new PB is 11.9 @ 109mph which was my 2nd pass.  The rest of the day it was either too much wheel spin or a slipping clutch preventing me from running any quicker.  So now I'm looking into new clutch option as the standard unit just can't handle the extra ponies.

There was two other Breakouts racing...

CVO with mid cams running 12.4s

This Std Breakout won the V-Twin & Single Bracket running 13.1 all day.  The rider also races a full on drag car so his reaction times were awesome.

So hopefully once I have sorted out the slipping clutch and I get my act together we hope to see "Cherry" run a 11.7 or better.

I know I posted on this once, but I just can't get over those pix of his softail on the strip with those apes.  The V-Rod is the only Harley I ever think about when it comes to 1/4 mile runs, so this was a very cool surprise... ;D

Some vids from my gopro3. Best watched in HD.

Lined up with a mate on his Destroyer. Only his second outing on the bike.

And then CVO Breakout Vs CVO Breakout.

It felt like I hit a brick wall in 3rd when the clutch let go!

No sure yet.  The guys who built the engine have been at the dealer meeting in the US. Once he's back we will talk options.

Barnett and Bandit do bullet proof clutches with lockup. Be interesting to see what your dealer goes with. Let us know what they come up with Bretto.

We'll for Xmas I got a gift voucher to a local dealer.  So with some extra cash I walk out with the Heavy Breather - Elite. Same as on the 2014 FXSBSE.

Also sit nice in the arse now it's lowered. Will get better pics soon.

I've also ordered another CVO Medallion for the front of the filter to finish it off.

Sorry for the large pics, can't resize them on my iPad with tapatalk.

Hello, I am also thinking of putting the Heavy Breather elite on my breakout, but I have seen that you have removed the old Heavy breather complete with the old elbow (it is on the workbench behind your bike). :P
Does this mean that the heavy breather elite does not fit the old elbow or did your dealer had this thing only as a complete unit ? :vrolijk_24: I am asking this while the complete unit is costing 370 Eur here in Europe and the complete Filter element alone only 125 Eur.

That is correct. The Elite air cleaner is an oval shape and won't fit onto the Heavy Breather round pipe.

Decent photo update.  (not taken in my shed or garage for once)

Left home this morning with clear sky's, but by the time I did the 60km ride to the beach the weather had turned bad.  Just managed to get a few HDR photos done on the ole iPhone5 before the drenching began.

Over the weekend we did another drag racing meeting, the 3rd one on the Breakout so far. Didn't beat my PB but i'm slowly getting more consistent.  :2vrolijk_21:

Firday night I was on my lonesome so no pics other than this one. My Best for the night, 12.19s @ 108mph

Saturday my misses and little fella were at the track so we got some pics.

Twins were second class out after the rain... Track was still bloody tacky.

Me and my little fella having an early feed. He already has the racing bug, his 3rd race meet and he's only 13 months old.

2nd wheelie for the weekend, the 1st one on friday night did catch me by surprise.   :o

2 wins and going for a 3rd for a look in at the final but Breakout ended that chance. Anyway it was beer time then.

I urge all you guys and gals to give Drag Racing a go. You dont have to do a burnout, wheelie's or the fastest time. Just get out and have some fun. I lost in the 3rd round to an 883 ridden by a 5ft nothing lady who doesn't do a burnout, just lines up and has a red hot go and almost hit the magic tonne. Trust me it is a lot of fun but be warned it is addictive!

Done some changes to the bike. Back to the standard bars (looking for speed at the drags) and SE shift-light fitted. Love the apes and will put them back on once I retire the Breakout from racing.

Also back to the old Heavy Breather as the Elite actually lost 5hp on the dyno. It is slightly bigger than the 2013 throttle body but the lip / edge was disrupting air flow. Old one back on and the ponies came back. When time allows I will match the TB to the Elite Heavy Breather and should pickup some more ponies.

I managed to crack the 110mph and did back to back runs at 11.91 so with some tweaks of the shift-light and some practice, I hope to get down to 11.7 next meet.

I've done 18000kms, two dyno runs, ride in 35+ degrees Celsius heat and numerous runs on the drags strip and no issues with the oil lines. Don't settle for your second choice as you will never be 100% happy plus every time to start up you blow dust over the sweet paint work.

yes I know what you mean but there are three issues that I know of if fitting the Big Shots Staggered

1/ trimming the heat shields & possibility the chrome may peal from them

2/ excess heat on the oil tank - I have heard on a standard breakout they have burnt the paint on the oil tank

3/ having to space the pipes out on the bottom - the two pipes don't sit parallel & appear to sit out to wide from the frame

I have also seen that they can discolour the paint on the swing arm

but I have to admit they look a lot better than the Big Radius

I wonder if there is any performance advantage between the two...............

Rod

Rod,

I've never seen or heard of any of the issues you have listed. With two mates also riding CVO Breakout and a few others on 103 Breakout none of us have had any troubles.

The only discolouring I've had is on the lower side of the chrome rear axle cover but this was also the case on my Fatbob running the Big Shots Staggered.

But you got to do what makes you feel happy brother and enjoy the ride.

making some nice power there Brett

how have you gone with the clutch, have you made any improvements there or are you just using the SE Clutch Spring from the Stage 3 kit

apart from head gaskets & cam did you use the stage 3 kit or build up your own

did you do anything to the heads ?

Rod,

Basically a Stage 3 plus bigger cams, thinner gaskets to get to 10.8 and some minimal cleaning up of the intake ports of the factory heads. As for the clutch we have added extra washers to get some more bite from the spring.

But watch this space... As long as I can get approval from the Minister of War & Finance (or I might just have to ask for forgiveness) we have a lot more hp coming later this year...

We'll just paid for the next step in chasing more hp... Procharger with front mount intercooler. Will be a few weeks before the kit arrives, can't wait!

Looked at soooo many options from S&S124 kit, S&S126 with B2 heads complete engine, Trask Turbos but the Procharger came out on top. Best bang for you buck plus the misses will still be able to ride it without fear.

Hi Bretto, you still happy with 16" highballs? I'm thinking 14" might suit better, not sure yet. I'm 6'4. I'll fit them next month in brissie, coming thru rocky first week in December. Like the look of the 16s but. 2.5k should cover that, shouldn't it?

Riegs,

I love the 16" but have gone back to the original bars to chase a few extra tenths over the quarter.  With the apes I was consistently 12.2 and now consistently 11.9 with the stock bars. And hope to drop into the 10's once the Procharger is on,

Once I stop racing the apes will go back on.

What date are you passing through?

It's been a long few days with late nights working after hours to get the ProCharger fitted and tuned before the weekend. Now we have a week of test riding to do before our next race meeting next weekend.

As we had already built the motor once before with forged piston and some headwork, the heads were removed to added some oversize gaskets to drop the compression back so it would be more supercharger friendly. The kit is very easy to install and ProCharger has done an awesome job with the quality of the kit and instructions. Only two issues we had, 1st the kit is to suit all Softails but the supplied clutch does suit the hydraulic CVO clutch. Which is not a major issue as we have all ready beefed up the clutch prior. 2nd was the silicon hose from the bonnet to the intercooler pipe was the wrong size so I found a blue hose in the correct size to run until they supply the right one in black. 2 very minor problems, Overall very impressed with the kit.

As of 3am Saturday morning we had 140rwhp & 135ft-lbs @ 8psi. We still have a fair bit of fine tuning to do so there is still more in her yet. That afternoon once I sobered up I went for a short ride and WOW this bike if frickn AWESOME! Can not wait to race it next weekend!

Took some photos today after giving the bike a quick clean.

Still waiting on a new blow off valve, fly by wire setup instructions and correct silicon reducer hose. So all tuning has stopped for now. Apparently we are the 1st CVO Breakout to go down the ProCharger route and the standard softail kit needs some tweaking for the CVO.

Even with the teething issues it still looks damn HOT!

What sort of power/torque did you end up with mate? And did you make and other mods like cams or higher boost?

Ive somehow deleted half of the sentance before sending. Full sentance below now Bretto.

Looks great Brett. Bet it goes great in a straight line.(only)  as I've scraped my stock primary case a few times and that looks much lower. This bike is one from a Japanese website I found. Pity you can't ask them a few questions you need answers on.

Still sorting out some issues mainly with getting enough fuel into the engine. VE tables maxed and at 160cui in the SERT and still leaning out above 4000rpm @ wot. And no PC V for the CVO Breakout to get more fuel.

Very nice HP, not seen another Breakout with higher numbers than those.

Thanks mate. This will be my street setup 165hp @ 8psi.  Hope to crack 180hp @ 10psi running Hi Octane fuel as my Race setup.

Can't wait to get it out on the track again.

Awesome thread on your BO, Bretto. Just finished reading the thread and would like to find out if you have had any issues with the boys in blue with your front indicators integrated into the mirrors and the side mount rego plate. I see the KPR boys have a rear number plate with indicators and taillight all included, have you looked at that? Wonder if that would attract any unwanted attention as well? Cheers

Mate no issues so far but I try not to attract their attention as well.

KPR gear is nice but way over priced. Once they stop selling and start discounting them I might get one.

Finally got back onto the Track last month and had a blinder!

Got a new PB for the 1/4  :pepper: 11.26 @ 118mph.  The bike still has more in it so with some tweeks we are chasing a 10.?? pass hopefully next time.

Changed the bars again  ::) now running a set of FatBob bars.  :o

My last race for the year and that 10's pass has eluded me... Still a new PB of 11.14 @ 122mph.

Bike is strong, just up to me to get off the line better and drop the 60ft time.

So now it's time to give "Cherry" a complete detail. Lots of rubber to remove and the Prochargers alloy needs a good polish. Then take advantage of this good weather we are having and get some cruising done.

Well 3 broken belts in 3 years so we now have CHAIN!

We were going for a taller ratio but ended with identical to stock. So I have another rear sprocket on order so when racing I don't have to change into 5th just before the 1/4 mile mark.

The chain has made the bike launch harder off the line!

Good luck hitting the 10s with the chain!
Title: Re: My Crimson Breakout now she's broken!
Post by: Bretto on August 26, 2016, 08:35:50 AM
Well it was bound to happen but "Cherry" is broke big time!!!

OK lets take a step back for a minute.  Since going to chain drive we have replace the rear sprocket for the next size down which gave us a 5% taller gearing. So 100km/h on the Odo actually was 100km/h instead of 95km/h as standard.

Also fitted the Barnett Scorpion Lock-up clutch kit including new alloy clutch basket as I requested but soon found out the stock basket was used. And the compensator replaced with and eliminator due to excessive wear since fitting the chain drive.

Now we head back to the track chasing that 10s pass.  1st run I did was more of a shake down pass trying to get a feel for the new clutch and ended up short shifting into 5th instead of running out 4th at the 1/4 mile. Well I was expecting an average pass but the look on my misses face said other wise. 11.16s @ 122mph compare to our PB of 11.14s @ 121mph. Now I was sure we were going to break into the 10s if I just get a decent pass done. So more rev's off the line and she hooks up and goes! Pull 2nd gear and crunch no power! Limp to the end of the track and I notice the Procharger is not turning. Cool just the internal belt has let go. So back to our pit and pull off the PTO cover to replace the belt.

Well this is what I found...  :(

At first glance I though the compensator bolt had just come out, which it had. But upon further investigation the clutch basket has broken sending alloy chunks all through the primary. At this point I realise the std basket was used not the stronger Barnett unit as I requested! Not Happy to say the least.

So I take "Cherry" to another shop who I respect and have a history of building very quick bikes and have lots of Procharger experience but are 1hr plus from home to do the repair as I have lost faith in my local shop. After a few days I get the phone call and she is bad... Crank is bent as well  :( but pushing 170+rwhp it was always on the cards to happen at some stage.

So now the crank and cases have been sent off for repairs. Repair/true the crank, oversize pin and weld it in place, balance and have the cases machined for timken bearing upgrade. Also going to take advantage while the motor is in pieces to go to the 117cu kit with some extra boost shoved down it's throat now the bottom end should be bulletproof.

This is going to stretch the budget so will take a few months to get back on the road but we will be racing again in the new year and hope to get some run in miles done before the end of the year. Never know we may even crack the 200rwhp barrier if Im lucky/stupid enough!  8)

All I can say is that this is one bad breakout.  The broken parts take me back to my metric bikes days with 1170 kits and steel clutch baskets to hold it all together.  Good luck in the new season.
