Title: 2005 SEEG Compensator
Post by: efrbc1 on December 21, 2014, 09:50:51 PM
2005 SEEG Cherry.  Occasionally I get a grinding noise when starting the bike.  Sounds like it could be the compensator but not sure.  I have replaced the ring gear and pinion (Rivera set) and upon reassembly I followed the HD "updated" tightening instructions for the compensator.  Bike now has about 50K with no other issues.
I have to remove the inner primary to replace a leaking shift shaft seal so I will be removing the compensator anyway.  My questions are - IF the compensator looks worn, what is my best choice for replacement.  HD says there is no "parts kit", only complete replacement.  Anything else to look at while I'm in there?  Finally, any tips from those who have done this before?  I will be buying the George's Garage Primary Locking Bar and Shift Shaft Seal Tool so I should be good on tools.

Thanks for any recommendations.

Chris

The 05 comp is very robust and they rarely fail. The most common issue with them was the main nut coming loose. The grinding is most likely the starter drive clutch inside the starter motor.

My 05 has been grinding too. I have the comufire 1084 ring gear. It looks fine but pinion gear is a little chingered. Plan on replacing starter gear clutch and pinion gear.

My '05 has recently developed a "sneeze" at startup, (7 out of the last 9 times). When I allow the ignition to cycle then press the starter button, the engine turns over, "sneezes" (sounds like a small backfire) then immediately starts / idles / runs fine, no clunk on shutdown... Any ideas if this is the compensator, or could it be something else???  Bike has 56k. Had the Tech check the battery (last month) and was told it didn't need replacement.

Opened it up to replace the POS HD shift shaft seal (with a Cometic).  Compensator was tight and looked good.  Still the occasional "grind" when starting.  I looked for a starter drive clutch assembly and per the online parts lists the clutch assembly is not available.  What's the fix??

Most car shops that specialize in starters can get the proper starter clutch for your Harley or aftermarket starter for a lot less than you would pay the motor company. One part # I have, and use is by ZEN #4-1071.
FWIW, early compensators WON'T make a grinding sound.

Doesn't appear that either of those will work on the SEEG starter.  IS there any updated info as to which one I will need??
