U Can Lead A Donkey To Water But --------
« on: May 04, 2006, 10:32:14 AM »

Subject: Fw: fema

This past weekend FEMA and the City of Austin, along with the Texas Workforce Commission setup a job training/hiring/interview/job fair for all the Katrina FEMA evacuees in the Austin area to be held at the ACC campus on Webberville Road in East Austin . Several of the evacuees said they had no transportation to get from the apartment complexes.

So the city of Austin/FEMA/TWC set up transportation for each of them to ensure they would be able to partake of the benefit of job searching. The transportation consisted of nine buses and vans, to run from four locations in Round Rock, and five locations in Austin, in continuing shuttles back and forth to the campus to ensure that the hundreds of
people looking for jobs would be transported in comfort. The vehicles were brought to their residences; drivers knocked on the doors; and every effort was made.

At the end of the day, the nine vans and buses transported a total of one person.

Not one person per bus - one person total.

At the end of the day, none of the Katrina Evacuees applied for any of the jobs.

Not one person took employment - NONE total.

The bill to FEMA was $7800.

And yet they still get on TV claiming that the United States Government "OWES THEM", I say we don't owe them anything and if anything, they OWE us - the Tax Payers that are "WORKING PEOPLE", they owe what they have been mooching off of the Tax Payers for almost a year now. It is obvious that they don't intend to work as long as they can sponge off of the system. It is time to cut them loose and tell them the free ride is over!

I checked this out and it is actually true; one rider.........

Here's a link with a full explanation  http://urbanlegends.about.com/library/bl_fema_job_fair.htm

Bottom line is 200 or so people showed up, but the explanation goes on to say "no one knew about the busses" blah, blah, blah.....WTF, can't any of these organizations get something right when they spend tax dollars.

I heard the other day that the money FEMA has spent and accomplished little with would have paid for a $150,000.00 check to each survivor/household.  Billions mis-spent and no doubt there are those just looking for the free ride, sure is a damn frustrating situation.

I am not trying to defend FEMA nor any other government agency BUT, given what you have written in your opening of this thread, would you advocate giving these families the $150,000 ? What do you think they would have done with that money ? Poor people are not inherently bad at managing money, they simply have no experience with it. You and I would most likely sit down and figure what needs to be accomplished with our $150,000 check, because while it is not an insiginificant sum, we realize it is not a ticket to easy street. Imagine if you had never seen more than $20,000 per YEAR in your entire life ?  And so, FEMA trys to manage the money for these people by hiring all of these contractors and subcontractors to provide services. And we see how that goes. I have a friend here in San Diego who is orginally from New Orleans, 9th Ward Orleans Parish. His two sisters still reside there. One of them is slurping up FEMA funds as fast as she can concoct a new scheme to get more. The other refuses to accept a penny saying she can manage for herself. Same family, two different attitudes. Know what the dividing line is ? Education. The one who refuses money is a college grad. The one who bilks the system never graduated from High School. Draw your own conclusions.

Its not the education that made the difference.  The educated one just has taken control of her life and this is just another example of that drive.  The other one lays back and takes what she can get.

I have two kids, raised a year apart the same way.  One leans one way, one the other.  Its a mystery to me why people turn out that way.

-------You can't make him drink.  No, but you can tie his donkey a$$ up, and make him thirsty.  That's the problem.  Not just with Katrina victims, with the lot of State and Federal assisted recipients.  They have no incentive to work.  And, I'd bet that's where the busses went.  To the "Checkers", as we call them.  Hell, the only work they have to do, is get to the mailbox.  What happened to Welfare Reform?  I know ya'll remember that line of bull chit.  You know, you could only receive Welfare for 5 years, then the benefits were terminated, so you would have to find gainful employment.  Yeah, what they found was SSI.  We call that the "Sick, Sorry, and Ignorant", check.  I think that campaign promise was made by the same a$$hole that promised to cut "Big Government."  Yeah, he did that, too.  Shut down Bases, and put 300,000 Service Men and Women on the street.  CNN, and the rest of the educated idiots in this Country, still call him "Mr. President."  And everybody laughed at his opponent for talking about that "Giant Sucking Sound."  Well, America, stick your head out the window, and, By God, you'll damn sure hear it.  It's not the sorry a$$ed people, it's our sorry a$$ed Government that sired these unfortunate souls.  That's the way it is, and that's the way it will continue to be.  It's too late to fix it.  There endeth the lesson.  Later--HUBBARD
