Title: 131 just installed on 18 Limited
Post by: USNCVO on December 31, 2020, 08:39:16 AM
Just upgraded my 18 Limited to 131.  Used the S&S 550 cam, Trask breather with a Power Vision tune. Already had RC Components RCX Tormentor with RCC 4.5" cans.  We ended up at 135/150.  Pretty solid for dual exhaust.  Thoughts

Almost 140 lb. ft. of torque at 2k RPM's, outstanding! Different exhaust may yield a flatter curve?? Nice job.

Looks like the sum of the parts but could stand improvements in the tune area plus timing mods and the curves would likely flatten out.

NICE!!! My 128 build with the SS 550 cam with headwork, DD fat cat 2-1 with big bore baffle is making 138.59 and 148.25... So your build is very nice.. ENJOY!! I’m loving mine 😎

I was told by an independent shop that uses TechnoResearch software, not Power Vision, that those dips are a result of torque management that you can not modify with Power Vision software.  First time I have heard anything about that.... Any knowledge ?

I am not aware of any feature on a 2018 model that acts as "torque management".  The Reflex Defense Rider System (RDRS) using Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) became an option in 2020 on touring models. Years prior to that did use the ETC but that was only to delay full throttle engagement and ease the load on the drivetrain.
There are slight hints in that sheet that the tune is not quite right.  Either Power Vision or Techno Research have provisions to adjust the ETC speed of engagement VS throttle position but that isn't the issue. Plus the cam despite being relatively high lift is more of the torque variety than one that will make a large power number. All of that said the build made 135/150. That isn't too shabby with stock heads. How does it feel to you on the road? Are you happy with the the result?
Where are you at? Tulsa? How about GMR Performance in Dallas?

That’s a known 550 cam dip, even look at the SS website Dyno... It’s a very finicky cam to adjust.. Took lots of hours and patience to tune some of my bike dip out.. Trust me!!! You will NEVER even feel it while riding... ENJOY

It is an oddball cam for sure. Different timing for front and rear cylinders. Its a 131, that is a big motor. Even not perfect they will run well. Rarely does a cam cause a torque dip, that is usually attributed to the pipe. But that said it is about how they play together. There are other S&S cams that give tuners fits also like the 635HO for twin cams, there are similarities, look at the extreme TDC lifts. Not a statement about the company just a few of their cams and how they play in typical builds. At the end of the day it is about how it runs, is the customer happy, and how long it will run well with good engine health.

Soooo about that "on the road thing".  When the bike was all back together, they found a small crack in the header pipe close to the cross over.  RC Components has a life time warranty for structural defects.  Dealership is reaching out to RCC on Monday to get a new one shipped in.  The heads are the ones that came in the kit.  When I dropped the bike off, I went home and wrote 132/145 on a piece of paper and put it in one of the guns safes.  If the result was better than those numbers, I would be good with the build.  We exceeded them, so I am fine.  I am anxious to ride it but between the headpipe and the crappy weather here, it is going to be a week or so.

Depending on how I like the ride, the summer may bring D&D 2-1 and ThunderMax.  We'll see

So here is a question based on what you said, we have a video of the throttle plates closing at the same time that dip happens. Any ideas.

Here is mine with just the Harley 131 kit, Fulsac and TTS. Honestly was surprised how well it turned out only using the Harley kit, runs amazing. All about who tunes it IMHO.

Very important indeed,
My opinion, the combination is what counts. Picking a cam profile, matching it with head flow and compression, and a good solid tune is what makes an engine perform well. The pedigree of the parts not so much important. Screaming Eagle parts get a bad rap and they are not always so bad and in fact mixing and matching some of them and maybe a few from the aftermarket can yield some big winners.

Wow, with 126ish torque at 2k? That's awesome. My 117 with cam, exhaust and tuner is about 105 torque at 2k. Huge difference. Nice job Alan!

Everything is what came with the Stage 4 131 kit. No changes. Did over 350 miles today up in the mountains between San Diego and Palm Springs as well mas the Laguna Mountains outside San Diego and still amazed how the bike runs! I have a 12 Roadglide with a crate S&S 124 in it and was going to bring the tuner my dyno from that bike (135 TQ and 140 HP) and tell him if he got anywhere close I would be happy. Certainly glad I didn't though I do love how the S&S runs, this bike now dwarfs it.. Also running the TAB Zombie mufflers which sound awesome to me. My wife told me I was very immature for a old guy!

Gene did my 124 last month and I wanted a flatter torque curve, we went with a TTS 200 cam at about 11.1-1 comp. and he delivered.
A lot flatter curve, and lower numbers of course but it’s right where I ride.
Still getting stock gas mileage and very nice passing power! It just keeps pulling as the rpms go up.
I’m very happy with the manners of the bike, almost mild manners right off idle, it just keeps pulling!
Not bad for 1000 lbs of iron.

Just installed 131 on 2019 FLTRXSE.  All stock 131 kit with CFR slip ons, SE Ventilator AC, Street tuner w/Harley Pro Street Tuner/Smart Tune Pro.  126-hp @ 5.68k RPM, 142-ft lbs @ 3.81k RPM.  Love the power and torque.  Gas mileage - not important to me - has suffered, but only have 600-miles on new motor and expect it will improve.
