Commander 3 vs American Elite 4 Rear Tires
« on: October 04, 2020, 01:52:57 AM »

I have FXR4 S&S V111 and a 98 King S&S V124 motor. Both bikes have 130mm 16" rear tires and i can't get much over 8k miles on either bike. I don't do wheelies or burnouts. Tire pressure is kept to 40 psi much as possible. I tried just about all tires. I tried the commander 2 and 3, no real differences.  ME888 Aand the American Elite 3. Gonna try the Elite 4 this time. I guess if I had newer bikes with wider tires they would probably get a lot more miles. What's the best?
I haven't tried Bridgestone or others but I am willing at this point. Thanks.

8k seems awfully low. I run American Elites on my 2017 flhtkse, I got 15 k miles out of the 1st set and getting new set this week with about 14 k miles on them, mind you that’s with riding them hard. I also keep them inflated properly.

I ride pretty hard, in the hills and mountains of East TN.  I usually get 12,000 miles out of the rear American Elite.  Its pretty much the same for both the Road Glide and the Road King.  Both have built motors.  I do not do burn outs.

Big advantage over the stock Dunlop is they do not cup at 5 to 6000 miles and howel in the curves.  Just replaced the rear on the Road Glide with 12,000 miles on it, and its never Howeled in the curves.

My stock Dunlop's cupped and started hollowing in the curves at around 5- 6K also.  Having used Dunlap's on my sport bikes forever with no issues I was disappointed with how they wear on my HD. Thought it was just my riding style & crappy suspension, interesting that other brands don't seem to do it.  I have pushed my stocks to 11K and was looking at maybe the Metzler's or Avon's cause I wanted more performance but the only issue I have with the Dunlap's was the wear.  Might give those Elite's a try.

I have American Elite on my 1995 flht and usually get 15-18k miles on the rear.
S&S 113 with Baker 6 speed that I ride pretty hard. It’s a solo bike now and I get about the same mileage.

The roads in California are smooth as glass and that gets me the good mileage!

I tried the American Elite 3 a while back and I got about 7k miles, since then I went through ME888 it was no better,  then Commander 3 and No difference so going with the American Elite 4 this time. You think they could make tires with deeper threads for more mileage. Keep same shape and compounds but make deeper threads like a car tire!

I don't care for Car tires on a Bike. There's not enough contact on ground when turning. Evident in the pic with Honda 1800 on sidestand. Problem would be solved of Motorcycle Tire Manufacturers greatly increased the thread depth.

There is a Dunlop factory rep showing the difference between car tires and wheels vs motorcycle tires and wheels on utube.
Some differences are the wheel bead surface is different from car to bike.
Car tires have thin side walls compared to bike tires.
He has cut aways to show this.
After seeing the video I’ll bet you won’t even want to try it!

Check it out.
