97 evo carb issues

(1/2) > >>

Graffster:
I bought this bike last fall after it had been sitting for over a 1.5 yrs only being started but not rode. I rode it home but the bike would pop through the carb on acceleration and is very hard to start. I changed the plugs yesterday but no change as to how it runs. I'm thinking the carb needs re-built like the floats off or needle valve sticking and it smells gassy after running it.
The bike is a 97 Dana Low rider

Smoketown:
I'd start with draining the old fuel, check/change the fuel filter.

1/2 bottle/can of Seafoam into the tank and fill her up.

Ride the hell out of it for about 1/2 tank. (Of course, MORE riding is better!)

Park it for a week to let the Seafoam work its magic.

Now, ride it some more to get the now softened deposits out of the fuel system.

Doc 1:
Take out the pilot jet and clean it or spend $5.00 on a new one.....this is the jet that clogs up first and it is also the jet used in the low end cruise area. There are also some transfer fuel ports in the throat of the carb just behind the throttle plate that are VERY small and could be cloged also. A good cleaning and good gas will go a long way.

J.D.:
Also check intake seals for vacuum leaks.

Graffster:
I'm picking up a rebuild kit today install tomorrow should fix the carb problems. Thanks for your suggestions will let you know how the bike runs after this.
