I caught on fire after cleaning my bike!!!!
« on: April 30, 2007, 10:24:12 AM »

Hey guys, thanks for the oven cleaner suggestion to get synthetic material off my pipes.  It worked, but I had one slight problem.  When I started my bike, I took the rag containing the oven cleaner off the pipe and put it in my pocket.  Three miles down the road my jacket burst into flames on the highway.  I pulled over and stomped it out.  My pants and undershirt were scorched, but the bike was fine.  I guess the heat from the pipe caused a slow chemical reaction and the wind fanned the flames.

Use the oven cleaner, but leave the rag at home before you take off ablaze!!!!!

Are you OK?  I am so sorry, cause I am one of those that reccomended the oven cleaner.  I got to get some of that glare stuff.  That is just ridiculously dangerous.  Sorry to hear about your near escape.  And loss of riding clothes.  Thank goodness it was not skin.

Yikes, that had to be a momentary thriller, hope your ok.  Good thing you didn't stop and try and do some touch up on the hot pipe while on the road and before your little pocket burner.

Sounds like the vapors got trapped until they built up and then found an ignition source. Glad to hear that you didn't get hurt. Valuable lesson learned and something we all need to keep in our mind when working w/cleaning materials. Some do the job well, but should be used with caution.

Yea, it's not good to stick any rag in your pocket with chemicals on it. The chemicals can leach thru your cloths and be absorbed thru your skin, especially if you sit on it for a while! This happens a lot with mechanics, most only get a slight rash, but it pepends on what your working with, and how thick the skin on your back side is!!!!  ;D

Glad you're ok. Good reminder not to just toss rags w/ chemicals on them. When done I rinse em out, air em out and keep em out until the trash goes out.

Wow!! Glad you and the scoot are OK :2vrolijk_21:     Never really thought that seriously about the storage of used rags.  Makes one think twice about the simple things we take for granted.

I'm ok.  Only got a slight burn on my finger taking the flaming rag out of the jacket.  I finished the cleaning job later and the rainsuit material came off and I now have a shiny pipe!

Thanks for being concerned,

Another story

Had a 95 Buell S2 that had a 96" S&S motor in it.
Sold it to a guy that had it in his garage.
He was installing an Aerocharger turbo on it.
Had a bunch of greasy shop rags laying next too the bike.
He went to the hardware store to buy some fittings.
Got home, fire department there, Buel and BMW  melted down and garage gone.
Spontanious combustion blamed on the greasy shop rags.

Be careful with chemicals!

I officially declare this  Shop Safety Week.  Lets get some more stories of stuff to avoid while working in the garage.

Once while using a wire welder I broke the arc and forgot to let off the trigger and burned a hole through my glove and my thumbnail.  Ouch!

I've learned to NEVER put on hair spray while smoking.

JesterDecor doesn't let me use power tools ever since the incident.

Do you know how many times a drill motor will wrap around itself if you don't take the chuck key out before pulling the trigger?

Ever got a wire brush on a hand grinder caught up in your flannel shirt?
