Using Dawn to remove old wax/polish?
« on: February 16, 2009, 05:23:24 PM »

A Glare tech tells me to wash my bike with Dawn Dishwashing Liquid to remove old wax/polish before applying Glare.  Anyone else do this?  He said to put about a capful to a gallon of water.  Gotta get the old wax off before using the Glare.  Dawn good idea or not?

Not really necessary as you're going to use a good 'polish' before putting on the Glare wax anyway and that'll remove everything down to the clearcoat...including fine scratches in the clear if your use one of Glare's (or someone else's) products to prepare the surface.  Good 'rubbin'.  :) har!  spyder

Don't use Glare but several of us use Dawn before touching up paint.

I too have heard this and have done this, but not to a bike.  I have done it to a car and it turned out great but it was a lot of work.  Growing up I was always told to never wash a car etc... using dish soap as it will strip the wax. So I guess if you want to start from scratch then use it.

Dawn, Ivory, most dish soaps will strip wax very well.  We used it when I was detailing cars during my summers back from college.

The dawn wash worked great!  Stripped off all of the S100 I've been using.   :2vrolijk_21:  Using the Glare Polish.  Best stuff I've ever seen.  The shine on chrome is blinding!   :bananarock:

I've used Dawn for years, to wash the bike just before I detail it.  None of the other dish soaps work.....just Dawn.  Use it on the bike, cars, trucks, etc.  I even used it on the boats before I sold them.  It cuts grease, oil, wax and will not harm the paint, clearcoat, plastic or the matt finishes.
