Car Towing a Bushtec

(1/1)

charles05663:
Was not sure if I should have started a new thread but...

I recently sold my house in Vermont and moving to the El Paso, Texas area.  It will be nice not having all of those left turn only signs.

The trailer is a Bushtec Turbo+2 and was manufactured in 12/2001.

Anyway, while packing my cargo trailer I was unable to pack the Bushtec and will be towing it behind my Outback.  I have not had the chance to do any maintenance on it since I bought it and need to get the trailer in shape before I leave in a few weeks.

The Bushtec pin fit nicely into a spare class II hitch I had so I am set there.

I am not sure what wiring adapter I am going to need to plug in the lights.  I have both a 7-pin round and a 4-pin flat on the car and the Bushtec has a 6-pin flat adapter.

The tires look to be in good shape for the age of the trailer and I don't see any dry rot.  It was stored in a garage while not in use and was used very little.  There is no spare tire so I was thinking of picking one up along with a couple of inner-tubes.

I looked at the Bushtec website (which really sucks) and the price of their bearings is $12.50/each.  I recalled this thread and was planning on picking this up.  Any issues with these and do the fit my Turbo+2?  I plan on replacing all the bearings before my move.
Bushtec Wheel Bearings - Any other sources besides Bushtec?

I was looking under the trailer and noticed some dry-rotted bushings.  Any suggestion on these?

I thought this might be a good thing to order when I order the other stuff:
Instuctional Manual

I don't have a bicycle pump and will plan on picking one up for the tires and suspension.

As previous mentions in the Bushtec Maintenance thread I should use this lube:
Super-Lube Pencil Applicator
I am not sure where to use it.  I did notice a zert for the hitch and was going to use a bearing grease on that.

Is there anything I am missing?  I greatly appreciate the help here.

You must be missing something or you wouldn't be moving to El Paso. Just kidding. Not much help here. My pull behind camper has electric brakes so I disconnect them if pulling with a 4 wheeler. That shouldn't be a concern for you. Good luck with the move.

You can get a 6-pin harness from Bushtec and you can connect the wires at the other end to whatever plug fits your car.  Wiring diagram is on Bushtec's website.  Here I found it:
green - run/tail; white - ground; blue-brake; yellow-RT; brown-LT; black-interior light

Your call of course on whether the tires are capable but after this much time I would be somewhat suspect.  Bushtec uses a 6-ply tire and in that size is only available from them.  Plus they are a bear to change so I would recommend shipping wheels to them for tires and bearings.

You can find NTN or NSK 6203 bearings at many suppliers but Bushtec uses the 15.875 mm ID which is very hard to find.  The 17 mm ID is most common but will not work.  Again another reason I send my wheels to Bushtec for tires and bearings.

I don't use that pencil lube.  Super Lube and others make an aerosol that is easier to use.  Check the owner's manual which is on their web site and it tells where to lube the suspension.

By the time I got everything ordered,

6-4 pigtail (1) $29/each,
spare wheel & tire assembly (1) $199/each,

I checked on a extra hitch & locking pin and it was $129.00.
