Shift arm failure
« on: November 02, 2008, 07:10:56 AM »

The shifter arm on my Springer failed.  It's come loose a few times (therein was the problem), but this last time try as I might to tighten the bolt that connects the arm to the shaft linkage, it was obvious something was up.  Turns out the shifter arm is aluminum and the shaft it attaches to is hardened steel.  There's splines on each that mesh.  My shifter arm is stripped.  The hardened steel shaft was fine.

C'est la vie.  Bike is out for a week here at end of the season while the part comes in (under warranty).  Next time, if/when the arm comes loose, special care required.

Unfortunately, it can be a problem on the Softails and Touring bikes.

A week?   ???   Ask them to go to one of the many unsold bikes on thier showroom floor and remove the shifter arm you need from one of them...

shifter should be checked at every service, if the bolt does not tighten up replace the bolt with a new one. axil

Were you being rough on it, or was it defective...

I looked at mine after reading this post and it appears fine.....

At least its under warranty

Nope.  Can't say I was rough on it.  If there's a next time, I'll use more care first time it comes loose.

Actually, this is a fairly common part failure.  I had one fail on each of my 04 SEEG's.  At the time my parts guy said they had starting stocking a couple because of the high failure rate...   :nixweiss:

Good news. Bike was only out for two days. HD overnighted the part due to warranty.  x
