If you didn't ride a Springer, what would you ride?
« on: January 09, 2010, 07:35:16 AM »

Bought my Springer in '08 after years of looking at them.  Love the look and ride.  Thinking about another bike (will keep the Springer).  Want something for longer rides.  I find my limit on the Springer is about 250/300 miles in a day.

After some thought, think I fall into a general category of "sport cruiser" in terms of my interest.  I'm looking at the BMW K1300 GT.  Not sure I can move from HD to BMW.  I'm committed to the HD brand, and the sound and setup is so completely different.  Plus, who wants to buy more riding gear.

Of the HD touring models, I think I like the CVO Road King.  Couple of reasons, but one is that I'm not sure I like a fairing (although the touring benefits are obvious).  One thing I like about the Springer is how you sit down "in" the bike instead of "on" it.  On touring bikes, I'd like to find that "down and in" setup.

Hard to believe a committed HD rider would think about BMW or another brand, but I am.  It obviously doesn't provide that "down and in" setup.  At some level, I'm interested just because the BMW is so completely different.

Any thoughts out there?

Let me know.

I have a springer and subsequently bought a BMW as well. I chose the R1200RT because I like air cooled twins.

not knocking the bmw but try a HD touring bike with a aftermarket seat that will help in makeing you seat lower on the bike  and you will like a farring.... thats my 2 cents ....

try out the FLHX street glide, it has the lowest seat high of the touring models which might give you feel of sitting in the bike

A HD Touring Bike. As for model it makes no difference as the shocks and seat contribute to the seat height. If you like the down and low feel there are drop seat kits by FBI for the touring models.

I also own a Roadking. But would consider a Street Glide or a Fatboy next. You can do so much to a Fatboy. Oh it looks like I am going to buy a Fatbob or a Softtail Deluxe for my Daughter in the near future. HD all the way!!!

Thanks for the insight.  I'm going to need to try both the Road King and the Street Glide.  I've not ridden with a fairing, so we'll see.  Appreciate the advice.

You have a non fairing bike now so that would be the direction I would be looking, fairing.

I can only afford 1 bike, so for now I'd only ride a springer no matter the distance with no plans to "upgrade" to a bagger.

Many reasons I bought an HD, a springer, a CVO, and I'm living my dream my way. Don't think I can get any bigger rush on any other bike, and one of these days it will be my ride to Sturgis.

If I didn't get my springer, I was going to build my own, and it would have still been a springer. HD came as close as I needed to and got too many projects, so my 09 was a nice "out of the showroom" start.
Spoken like a TRUE Harley rider. I own a 1954 Panhead I built/rebuilt myself and a 1984 FXSB Low rider bought new in 84. I always said I would never ride a new bike. That is of course until I saw a Springer CVO. I now own in addition to my old bikes a Cobalt blue Springer. Got to ride it for the first time yesterday. Living in NY is a bit chilly this time of year! The CVO is increadable. WOW, what a ride! It has Hooker trouble maker pipes, 258 cams & has been Dyno tuned. 112hp & 107 Torque at the rear wheel. It is impressive to say the least. Will never give up my old bikes & will still ride em. The memory's just flow through my head when ever I look at/ride em. Nothing compares to that! Ride on....

Also, I do not think buying a bagger is any kind of "Upgrade".

I've toyed with the idea of a RoadKing Classic. But I wouldn't give my Springer up so I have to save my coins a little longer or I find a better than average helluva deal on one.
