Where do you hide your cash?
« on: November 21, 2012, 10:53:49 PM »

I'm taking a 3-4 wk trip to Alaska next summer. While I will have a couple of credit cards, I feel more comfortable with cash. But if I take $2-3K cash and don't want it all in my pocket, where can I hide it in/on the bike where it will be safe.  Let's hear your suggestions.  (I have a Road Glide)

You might not want to post where it would be safe to hide your cash. Just saying. :nixweiss:

:2vrolijk_21:  Besides, with your Harley Visa or similar cash back credit card, your trip can be 1-3% cheaper.

My ex wife's bank account  :furious:

put some kind of a pocket inside your boot if you wear boots that don't lace up. or an ankle wallet just big enough to keep most of your cash in there. Personally when I travel, I use travelers checks.

You might try behind the liner of the tour pack if you have a tour pack.  in the left and right corner if you are standing behind your bike.   If you weren't already considering it, I would also consider bringing your tuning device as well as a copy of your tune on a memory stick of some sorts you can buy them pretty cheap these days.

I agree, money belt.  2-3k in 100's is not that bulky.  Just keep it in a front pocket.  I personally wouldn't hide it anywhere on the bike.  If the bike gets stolen or wrecked...well, you know the rest..

Regardless of where you hide it, do yourself a favor, declare it at the border crossing. My uncle did what you are planning and only declared the couple hundred bucks in his pocket. He had 3k hidden in the bike and the border agents found it during a "routine" search. I don't really need to tell the rest of the story, but he never got out of the Lower 48.

That's what I was thinking   :2vrolijk_21: I put 500$ in one pocket and the rest in the other,so when you buy something you don't pull out your whole wad(always assume someone is watching you and they know your a tourist) ;)  There is scumbags everywhere  :-\

I did this a long time...................it worked, got me from about 1977 to 2007, hid a bunch in the bars too.
seriously  just use a different pocket than your wallet so nobody sees it,even if ya had to give up your wallet.

:2vrolijk_21:   I was a bit flabbergasted when I first saw this thread, but since I'm trying to be a nicer and more tactful person (it's not working all that well so far) I was avoiding making my usual sort of comment.  But since you broke the ice.......

First, posting this sort of thing on the internet is probably not a great idea, kind of like it's not a great idea when your kids put the fact that the family will be out of town for a week on Facebook or other social media.  Now anyone who knows who you really are will know you plan on heading to the border with $3k in cash somewhere on you or your bike.

Second, if you really feel you need to carry that kind of cash, I suggest you don't stash it on the bike but keep it on your person.  And split it up as someone mentioned, so you don't pull a big wad out every time you buy something and advertise to those standing around watching.  For anyone who hasn't been watching the news for the past few years, these are tough times for a lot of people and robbery is one of the few parts of the economy that's booming.

I agree with others, try to use credit cards and keep them on you. If you must use cash try to keep it on you too. If traveling with a partner you can trust divide the cash between you both.
Then if you must have secure on bike storage you may want to consider this vault system which will not only secure your belongings but help in securing your saddlebag too:

I made a trip 'outside' this summer... rode to Texas and back over a 1 month period.

I only had about $100 in my pocket at any given time.  Used my debit card when cash wasn't feasible.

The cool thing about using a Master Card or Visa Card or any big bank card while riding through Canada (as I assume you'll be doing) is that you don't have to worry about the Exchange Rate... it's all calculated during the billing by your bank.

Carrying large sums of Cash (like I ever have any) always adds to the paranoia that always builds in me when I'm in a region I'm not totally familiar with.  And, Canada won't let me bring along my riding partner (XD-45)...

Also, if you are riding the whole trip... Canada's gas stations usually close around 10pm once you get outside of the larger cities... so make plans to stay overnight at the end of each day.

Make note of the earlier post... be sure to "Declare" anything you have on-board... Even though I think the maximum travel cash is $10,000... like on Air Travel, if you get caught up in the "Random" Security Check and they find something you didn't declare... well let's just say a 2-hr delay would be the best outcome.

Send me a PM if you are riding the whole way up here, and I might could share some really nice Hotels/Motels with you and let you know about some of the "Caution" areas along the road.   8)

When I go to the US and use a credit card at the pump, it asks for a zip code...so, I gotta go in and be # 10 in line. I'm not sure if it's the same when you guys come up.

When I go to the US and use a credit card at the pump, it asks for a zip code...so, I gotta go in and be # 10 in line. I'm not sure if it's the same when you guys come up.

Can't you just put in a dummy zip code?

Nope, the zip code is actually matched up to the credit card owner's address of record as a form of security, believe it or not.  I once fat fingered the zip code and got one digit wrong, and the pump wouldn't accept it.

I guess it depends on the part of the country you're in and how far along the stations are in updating their equipment, but most of the stations I use don't require zip code entry yet.

dayne just use the 3 number from your postal code & 2 zeros at the end  ###00 works 90 % of the time. as for using postal codes in Canada, never had to do that.

That happened to me once, too.  Took about a month for the pumps at that station to recognize that card again. :nixweiss:

Thanks, Weasels, I'll give that a try next time I'm down.

As a side note, after watching Californication, I prefer to call the machines ABMs, as ATM has a whole new meaning now.

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions. I too, keep my cash on my body, just not in one place. I had heard of putting some in baggies and taping under the seat or inside a side cover. One person puts it inside the fairing, but I wouldn't want to take it off on the road.

over here, especially in eastern Europe there are vast strips of land where no credit card will be of any use whatsoever - except maybe cutting a line  ::)

So we always keep a considerable amount of cash just in case. But 1. on our bodies of course (because anything else will be searched/stolen easier as your pants  ;)), 2. always in various places, never more than a modest sum in the valet (because that's what you show anybody when you pay), 3. never in any part of clothing you may put off during the day. So that leaves boots, belts, pants or tape on your body, make your choice and don't tell others  ;D

I take a few 3 - 4 day trips and one cross country trip a year, usually 4 - 5 weeks.  Carry less than $1000 in cash in my wallet, use my air miles credit card at Hampton / Hilton Garden Inns, for gas, food.  Use cash at some gas stations that are off the beaten path, small diners etc...  been doing this for years.

Some in my pocket and most in my sock. ;D.

I don't like the idea of hiding money on the bike just in case the bike goes for a ride without me. >:(.Just like someone else said......they will have to bleed for it.

Most of the time I will use my H.D. credit card. Can't wait to win another bike. 3 more days and i am back in the game. :bananarock:

When we went to the Nelson get together we looked into this situation. We were informed by our insurance company to get a card from them declaring that we were going into Canada. They also informed us to get 2 pre paid credit cards and keep one on the bike and one on my person, keep personal cash to a minimum of $250

I keep mine in my front pocket opposite from the .380 Ruger. If i get robbed, I plan on dropping the wad in an act of nervousness and putting all 8 in the robbers temple then pulling out my "throw down knife" from behind the 9MM in my saddle bag!  :P

Some considerations....

You can tie wrap/aircraft clamp or somehow afix one of the small aluminum tube "stash holders" in the battery compartment area...would have to take the seat off to get to it which makes it totally out of sight/out of mind.  Or depending on your configuration...can do the same inside the horn cover or in the air cleaner....or be inventive and simply mount under the bike on a frame rail.  Just don't forget it there before having service performed on the bike...otherwise could give new meaning to the "stealer".

Can also do an Amazon or ebay search for the fake cigarette lighters or fake batteries (AA or C/D cell) ...basically hollow shells that look like the real thing.

Also can use the spare magazine for your conceal carry/LCP .380 (you should always carry an extra anyway)....slip the end cap off the bottom/stuff the money in (before the spring flies out)...put the cap back on and stuff two or three defense rounds on top.....voila'!

Probably the one that makes the most economic and safest sense...
Pull seat/pull battery/cash goes in a baggie/baggie goes under battery/reinstall battery/reinstall seat....use credit card for everything and perform said pull sequence only when major cash is needed.

In this day there's no reason to carry that much cash.  Credit cards are accepted almost everywhere so it's not necessary.

If you do want to carry cash get a money belt.  REI makes a nice nylon web one with a zipper on the inside.  I wore one for three weeks in Europe and it worked great.  I had a lot of Euros in there as cash is still preferable to credit cards in Europe.

I always carry my cash in my front pocket, when traveling I will keep it with my passport and will never tell where I keep that. Of course the best method and safest way is to keep your cash on hand to a minimum and the rest in the bank.

One recommendation when traveling as a group.  Bring an extra key and give it to a partner.  we were touring Colorado one year, friend lost his key around dinner time.  Got lucky, he called his wife and she sent 2nd key overnight express.  Only slowed us down until 1pm or wasted about 4hrs.  Of course he was the ONLY guy that didn't have his 2nd key.  We razzed him the rest of the week, kept track of his only key.  Topic was cash?  it's called a debit card, limited cash in my pocket.

Money belt for foldable cash, ankle wallet if I have my boots on, front pocket for a small amount of cash and a credit card. Funny thing, last month I was getting rid of some clothes that "shrunk in the closet" and ran across one of my money belts rolled up inside a shoe. It still had 3 Franklins in it and 2000 Rand from South Africa, been in there since 2007. I had forgotten all about it so I just left it in place, going back to RSA this year and I already have a stash!

Regardless of where I go, I always keep my cash in my front right hand pocket, right beside my Kahr 9mm.

I usually keep all my cash with my wife when traveling, anybody wants it bad enough they have to take her too.  I'll probably be pissed about losing my money but I'd get over it.   Just saying........:D

That's funny!! Years ago I used to tell a friend of mine, Hey Russ, that guy's over there talking to your wife! He's say, "Two can't get on er and one can't hurt er! Besides that he'd bring her back in a little while!!  :huepfenjump3:
