The article mentions one reason other than benefit runs. That is some jurisdictions were giving traffic summons to riders who pulled up side by side at a light or took off from the light together. VA code considered that reckless driving and carried a stiff fine and could even have jail time attached.

They also passed a law making the motorcycle only checkpoints illegal. So no more M/C checkpoints in VA!

I didn't know there was such a law. Thinking about all the stoplights and stop signs where we have pulled up side by side in Va. and could have got cited. Glad it didn't happen, I would have been pizzed. Stupid law to begin with.  :soapbox:

House Bill 97, sponsored by Delegate Tony Wilt of Harrisonburg, allows two-wheeled motorcycles to drive alongside each other in one lane
Thanks Tony.  :2vrolijk_21:

It’s perfectly legal almost everywhere. Virginia will become the 49th state to accommodate two-abreast riding. Vermont remains the only state to prohibit the practice. “Riding two abreast is already allowed in 48 of the 50 states,” Wilt noted.
Really Vermont, get with the program......

I lived and rode in VA for 20 years, was fully aware of the law, and never felt it was stupid at all.  I don't want another vehice sharing my lane, even a motorcycle.  If some local yokel LEO's were being jerks and writing folks up for sitting side by side at traffic lights, that's bush league and the state authorities should have put a stop to it.  But if people were actually riding side by side in violation of the law, then they should have been cited.  I've observed more than a few riders who have a hard time keeping their bikes in one lane and who drag their feet for the first 100 feet after leaving each stop because they can't control the bike properly.  I don't want them next to me, or even near me.  That law made it easy to avoid those folks trying to join up and become my riding buddy.

The only times I've remembered anyone getting ticketed in Va. for side by side riding was when clubs passed thru the state.  Then, the LEO's used that law to stop the whole club and ticket (and whatever else).  I've always thought it was not due to safety, but to target the clubs that ride in formation.  Very good that they finally overturned it.  JMHO.  spyder

Thanks, D00d, that'd be just my luck to pull up at a stop light beside a riding buddy to communicate and WHAM, get a ticket for a reg that's going dead shortly.  :'( spyder
