CANDY THE ELEMENT IS SUPPOSE TO GET HOT AND WILL BE RED. MAKE SURE YOUR EXHAUST FROM THE DRIER TO WHERE IT VENTS OUTSIDE, (PROBALY ON YOUR ROOF) IS NOT OBSTRUCTED & FREE FLOWING. YOUR BREAKER ALSO MAY BE "WEAK" AND NOT HOLDING, OR YOU MAY BE OVERLOADING THAT CIRCUT WITH OTHER APPLIANCES ECT. NO MAYTAG REPAIR MAN BUT I CAN KEEP THE WIFEY HAPPY WHEN NOT RIDING,WATCHING FOOTBALL,RACING OR POLISHING THE CHROME ON OUR WHEELS [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif] GOOD LUCK & BECAREFUL. DAVE

Candy, Like Dave said, the element is supposed to be [smiley=cherry.gif] red when it's on a heat cycle. Depending on the setting, it should cycle on and off as needed to maintain the temp in the barrel. First thing to check is as Dave mentioned....often the discharge vent is stopped up, so if you can see into it after removing it from the back of the dryer, check that out...if it's like most, it will exit through a wall with a little angled cap on the outside to keep the weather out, so make sure there are no obstructions to impeed the air flow...kind of like on our scooters. One way to test this would be to unhook the vent tube from the back of the dryer and let it run unobstructed to see if that still trips the breaker. Depends on where the dryer is located though as to whether you can stand the added heat to that rooms environment. It won't hurt anything to do this for a while to test. Did you notice your clothes being unusually hot when you pulled them from the dryer before this tripping the breaker thing started? If so, you've got a bad t'stat, or temp sensor.
Hopefully, the dryer is on it's own circuit (it really should be). Breakers can get weak over the years. Has anything been added to your home recently that might have caused someone to (wrongfully) tie into that circuit? Breakers are pretty cheap, but if Jamie is not comfortable changing that out, don't let him try.
The bottom line is if the dryer is over 10 years old, and you've been wanting another one anyway, it's a good excuse. I'd at least find out what's wrong first, then decide on whether it's worth fixing.

One thing I've noticed about Maytag repairmen these days is they don't troubleshoot anything. They just start replacing the most likely part & go from there. You could potentially end up w/ a 10 yr old dryer w/ all new (& unnecessary) parts!

10 year old dryer may be so inefficient that a new energy efficient dry along with the cost of replacement parts would pay for itself in a few years. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]
Sounds like a good excuse for a new one, along with the aforementioned Xmas excuse.

Glad you figured out the problem, thermostat's are pretty cheap and easy to replace. Unless a new machine came in chrome [smiley=banana.gif] [smiley=banana.gif]

If you're going to do the themostat swap out, better off to get both the high limit and low limit thermostats and replace them at the same time. The elements do glow cheery red (matches some bikes :) ) and that's normal. I've rebuilt my drier twice in 10+ years and it's normally the thermostats or the element, and when the element goes bad they just separate and you have the thread in a new one. Good luck.....also, as some one said you need to narrow down what else is on that breaker and if someting was added to that circuit causing it to be overloaded,etc.

Sounds like everythings been covered all ready just wanted to toss in 2 more things to check. There is a possibility that the connection at the breaker is loose. When the dryer is running and with the [highlight]panel cover in place, don't open anything [/highlight]but the door to the panel, touch the dryer breaker, should look like two breakers connected together and may have the number 30 stamped onto it. Just touch it with the back of your fingers. Just the breaker not the handle. If it has a good connection and it's been running for say 20 mimutes it should feel warm, a little over body temp but not hot to the touch. Also Listen to hear any humming/buzzing sounds, sometimes when breakers are weakening internally they can start to viberate and buzz. Remember you don't have to open the panel to check this. If you find that there may be a probem at the panel give somebody a call to come and help you out.
Okay one more thing, check to see if there is any water getting into the panel, after a heavy rain water can work it's way into the panel. [highlight]Again you don't have to open anything [/highlight]just look at the bottom of the panel, sometimes depending on age and the amount of water getting in, the knockouts, the circles cut into the panel, will start to rust. Check the corners at the bottom edge too if there has been a water problem there may be rust there too.
Just a couple things to look for, if you have any questions for that end of the problem let me know.

went for the Screamin Eagle CVO LG Electronics front loading wizzbanger...

As mentioned above the new models are so much more energy efficient they will pay for themselves in a couple of years, that and it is new, new is always good.

Candy, does sound like the t-stat, it is a guess without putting the amp meter on it though. My theory is if it can be fixed then fix it. It is only $25 for the T-stat. Try it. If it soes not work you are only out the $25. If you need some help I have a good friend in Richmond that is an electrician.
