Yet another windshield thread
« on: May 23, 2015, 01:21:13 PM »

Stock 15 CVORGU, stock seat also. I'm 6'2" and wear a full face helmet when in my home state and ditch it if in a state where I don't have to wear one.

I am happy with the stock shield performance. Air flow hits top of helmet above my eyes and really doesn't bother me. I think I'd like something dark tinted and with a curve for styling that also pushes that air flow a little higher.

I've looked at many on line and they all seem to measure them differently so it's tough to compare apples to apples.

I like the looks of the Klockwerks better than the others.

I also don't want to sacrifice function for style. It must work first and then look good to me.

Suggestions?

Check out Freedom Shields in CO. Excellent quality, slightly recurve and they now have three different tints. I'm installing the medium tint 14" today and will have pictures of it later.

Couple hours of saddle time today.  Excellent performance and quality.  Pushes air slightly higher than stock.

Recently tried a Freedom 15" LG which provided good performance ........then swapped it for a 16" which I'm more pleased with. The stock shield was OK for me, but my BSR wife was not happy with the buffeting .....particularly on the sides of her half-helmet ....i.e. her ears. Both the Freedom 15" and 16" shields made her happy. For reference, I'm 6' with a 32" inseam. She's 5"-11" tall. Here's a pic:

Freedom shield price is pretty darn good, but I like the looks of the klockwerks.

Does the klockwerks perform any better to justify the big price difference or are you just paying for the name?

Are you talking about the Sport Flare or the Touring?
I had a KW 13" flare on my '11 SERGU. It didn't last long for me. Looked good. Just had too much wind all over the place. A taller one might have been better but I wasn't crazy about the distortion factor the times I had to look through the shield.

Klockwerks touring. I'm more interested in comfort for longer rides than I am for looking cool in town.

Good morning FLH91. The headset is a J&M Elite Series 629 and yes .......it works well for communications. While bass is not a strong feature, music sounds decent enough. For best the results, the trick is to make sure the speakers are positioned directly over your ears. I also use a shim so each speaker is pressed firmly against my ears.

The short answer is "YES" - I've got a windshield "fettish" and have tried way too many as my visa card can attest to. The best shields come from companies that put proven performance or function first and looks next. For my money Freedom, Clearview, and Windvest are at the top because they provide great products and usually great service, then possibly Cee Baileys and I would put KW's farther down the list after that.

I hope to be as lucky, I just received a 12 inch dark from him & it has to go back for a 10 inch, at 5'7', 29 inch inseam, stock seat I cant see over the 12 inch dark but I've always had a dark tint maybe I'll give the 10 inch medium a try. Any chance you have a pic looking forward through it....BostonBoy

Does anyone have a pick of a KW dark tour? Their website doesn't appear to show one, at least I didn't see it.

That looks awesome on that bike. How does it function compared to the stock shield? Better, worse, no difference.......

I was impressed with performance at all speeds where the front forks actually compressed a couple-three inches, planting the front end.  This differs from my 09 SERG where that bike felt lighter in the front end with all kinds of windshields...almost squirrely at high speeds.

The stock 15' windshield is very good...very, very good at all speeds in fact.  The KW shield with all vents open and me (5' 11.5")sitting bolt upright made the bike feel extremely stable at speeds all the way up to and above 100. It seemed to create a very stable bubble the faster you go.

So, IMHO, the KW Sport is as good or better than stock.  I feel lucky that I nailed it on the first try.

P.S.  I had the impression that the KW windshields for the previous pre-2015 RGs were all form with little function.  The new KWs have form and function dialed-in.  Individual mileage may very.

Beemer's single seat setup suggests her might not have BSR feedback. I found the stock windshield quite comfortable, however my BSR wife experienced severe buffeting. While a 15 or 16 inch Freedom Shield took care of the issue for us, I really like the look of the KW Sport. Anyone using the KW Sport with their 2015 FLTRUSE and have BSR feedback ???

Yes, I forgot to qualify my eval.  No tourpak or BSR.  My BSR is grounded for several months with back surgery.  The KW Sport may indeed cause unpleasant buffeting to a BSR.  Hopefully, someone else on this forum can fill in the blanks.

Well that would be a deal breaker. Wife is very happy with stock set up, I don't want to make it worse.

Looks like
Freedom Shield may be the way to go for us.

Thanks all

14" Freedom shield in light smoke/tint. Same height as the stock shield. I think just a hair wider in the corners. ABSOLUTELY NO DISTORTION in the recurve. I looked every way I could. Top quality all the way :2vrolijk_21:

Here's some pix. I had the wife hold a beach towel in the background so the tint is visible. That black you see on the towel is a design on the opposite side.

Thanks for all the replies and info. I think I've decided on the freedom shield 14" in dark smoke.

It looks good to me and your reviews say it functions just as well.

OBB, Hows the airflow over/around the shield for you?  After having mine a couple of weeks and doing numerous interstate runs I think I'd like a slightly taller one for trips but pretty happy with the 14" for general use.  Seems like I feel maybe a touch more turbulance with the Freedom Shield than with the stock shield when following heavy interstate traffic.  That could just be my imagination or since I'm running with the vents all closed.  I commute on I-65 many days in heavy traffic south of Nashville so frequently following trucks.  Had a darn cicata come over the top last Saturday and hit me right center of my riding glasses.  Made me question looking over the shield for a bit.

Like the looks of the medium tint shield on Greg's bike but still pretty happy with my light tint.  Guess I could get used to either.
