Our 00's work with a mercury switch which might be a better set up, cause you won't forget to turn it off when the lid is shut. I imagine its not EPA and OSHA approved for the newer bikes though. Doc
Those lights worked fine for many years, and then Harley cheapened the switch to a little BB that was supposed to roll back and forth with gravity to break or complete the circuit. After large numbers of those POS lights killed batteries (including mine shortly after buying the bike) when they didn't shut off because the BB stuck, Harley solved the problem by eliminating the superior lighting of the old style light and replacing it with the current LED that requires the rider to find and press a switch, and then puts out much less light. Typical.
Mercury switches are definitely not in the cards these days, but there are plenty of other gravity type switches out there that could have been used, or they could have added a simple contact switch to the TP which is what I did until H-D replaced my original light with the current type under warranty. I wish I had kept the old one.
