Tour pak interior light?
« on: April 21, 2011, 11:29:55 PM »

Before I go digging through fuses.. is there an initial setup for the interior light? Went to install one today and realized it comes with one, but mine hasn't worked since I brought it home...

Push in the center of the light itself to turn it on?

Don't feel too bad.  It's a good sized club that didn't know how to use that light when they first saw one.  I'm the Guidon Bearer for the club.

Yep have to admit I am a part of the club even though I still don't think it works very good.  I can get it turned on after a few tries and then it is difficult to shut off.......nothin like a 5 buck lite on a scooter like these!  Guess I will figure it out kind of like getting the CB activated??? Can you tell I am new to touring bikes, but lovin it!!!

Keep in mind there is a light under the tour pack on each side to illuminate the saddle bags.  They are sometimes hard to turn on.

Just to avoid the frustration...the light will turn itself off after a few minutes, so you can shut the TP and forget about it.

Our 00's work with a mercury switch which might be a better set up, cause you won't forget to turn it off when the lid is shut. I imagine its not EPA and OSHA approved for the newer bikes though. Doc

Those lights worked fine for many years, and then Harley cheapened the switch to a little BB that was supposed to roll back and forth with gravity to break or complete the circuit.  After large numbers of those POS lights killed batteries (including mine shortly after buying the bike) when they didn't shut off because the BB stuck, Harley solved the problem by eliminating the superior lighting of the old style light and replacing it with the current LED that requires the rider to find and press a switch, and then puts out much less light. Typical.

Mercury switches are definitely not in the cards these days, but there are plenty of other gravity type switches out there that could have been used, or they could have added a simple contact switch to the TP which is what I did until H-D replaced my original light with the current type under warranty.  I wish I had kept the old one.

The new light shuts off automatically after after a short time.  So no worry there.  Around 2006 Harley starts having problems with the old lights.  So the change to new happened then.

Thanks for the info on the light shutting off after awhile.  I was just out and could not get it shut off again???  So now I will go out and raise the lid to see if it is out.  Now about the C.B. radio?? LOL  Is there a school someplace that teaches all about the radio and all the switches, slowly but surely I might get it all figured out   :confused5:

Didn't even see the ones for the saddlebags! Thought they were just rubber bumpers to prevent SB scratches.....   The running lights on the tour pak do a great job of lighting the SBs when the bike is on, though.

Keep finding new stuff everyday! :)

You need to press the COM button on the radio to bring up the screen where you can turn the CB on or off.
Once you set it up the way you like you need to press the Mod Sel switch to get the display to return to the radio, CD or Ipod display.
The books that come with the bike have everything you need to operate it.

As far as the tour-pak lights go, they aren't the easiest to turn on or off. I have found that they are easier to work when the outside temperature is warmer.
Anything 50 or below makes it tough to operate. I was looking to glue something onto the center of the light that will allow you to press it easier.
